AIBU to wear...

A gemstone ring that isn't my birthstone? I have fallen in love with an amethyst ring on ebay. I dont usually wear jewellery and haven't treat myself in absolutely ages so really want to get it. However I can hear my grandmother's voice in my head telling me I will get terrible bad luck if I wear a gemstone other than my birthstone!

YABU = don't wear anything other than your birthstone

YANBU = Don't be daft, wear any gemstone you like

It’s not illegal so you can do as you please. 😊

MagentaDoesNotExist · 10/02/2021 13:23

What an odd question! Of course you can. Smile

Oldraver · 10/02/2021 13:24

My birthstone is a diamond...now I dont really like them, think they are boring and too expensive for what they are

There are so many other lovely stones, I think I will have a second birthday

Happycat1212 · 10/02/2021 13:25

I always hated my birth stone even from when I was little always thought it was the “ugly” one so would wear any that wasn’t it 😂

WorraLiberty · 10/02/2021 13:26

YABU

Bad Goblins will hack your finger off while you sleep.

LittleBoPeep95 · 10/02/2021 13:27

Could you ask your DH to slip his finger into your ring just before bedtime?
LittleBoPeep95 · 10/02/2021 13:29

Hahahahahaha oh my days!!! 🤣🤣

I don't even know what my birthstone is. I have a few rings with different stones. Tbh I don't think it's a thing to only wear your birthstone.

Plonque · 10/02/2021 13:30

Gawd, my birthstone in turquoise and I always felt terribly hard done to. Never worn it in my life.
Rubies, sapphires, emeralds, amethysts, citrines, topaz and diamonds on the other hand..... every damn day. Maybe that's why my life has gone to shit!?

WorraLiberty · 10/02/2021 13:31

Is it turquoise? I'm a December baby and I know Topaz and turquoise are either birth month stone, or star sign stone (Can't remember which is which!). I don't like turquoise. Sad
SleepingStandingUp · 10/02/2021 13:34

Yabu op.

That's my birthstone and I'm offended by other people acting like they were born in my month and wearing my stones. What if I wanted it but there was none left because all the fake-monthers had brought them?

I bet you're the kind of person who has flowers other then their designated flower?

Disgusting.

VanillaAndOrange · 10/02/2021 13:35

YANBU. I've never heard of that saying before, and I think everyone I know who likes gemstones just wears the ones they like best. My birthstone is aquamarine and it's not my colour at all. The stones I like wearing are garnets, moonstones, tiger eye and amber. I don't think I've had more than averagely bad luck in my life so far!

73kittycat73 · 10/02/2021 13:35

OOh, cross posted! Grin
I've only ever heard of opal being unlucky to wear if it's not your birthstone. Found out why last year too. Something to do with years and years ago the opal shrinking and falling out of it's setting, so you would be opal less and out of pocket.

Happycat1212 · 10/02/2021 13:36

No I’m October, I always though Opal was the ugliest

You're wrong, trust me and Kittycat 😂
IliveonCoffee · 10/02/2021 13:39

On the basis that my gemstone changes from diamond to cubic zirconia depending on how cheap the store is....I'd say birthstones are completely made up. Nothing bad will happen if you wear the wrong one.

Even if it were, by the logic its unlucky to wear not your birthstone, half of all married women might find themselves in the unlucky waters if they weren't born in April?

Wear what you like, gemstone wise. The only reason you shouldn't wear it, is if it's so weighty you can't lift your hand...but that probably only applies to that big diamond...something starting with a k....

Excellent point!!! But half of marriages end in divorce so hmm...

TJC, the shopping channel do a lovely Ethiopian Welo Opal. It looks really pretty on the TV.
EssexLioness · 10/02/2021 14:00

I’ve never heard this before and wear different gemstones all the time. My birthstone is Garnet ... like an ugly ruby, I hate it! So it’s prob the only gemstone I haven’t worn... love rubies, emeralds, pink sapphires and amethysts, and of course diamonds!

FuckyouCovid21 · 10/02/2021 14:05

Until this thread I'd no idea what my birth stone was and now I know what it is I still won't be wearing it. I hate blue
