To worry about getting food poisoning from this?

Amsmdm · 10/02/2021 10:14

I defrosted my freezer last night and for some reason decided to put the drawers in the bath so I could spray hot water on them to melt the ice
There were bits of bread crumbs stuck in the plastic front of the drawers from fish fingers/chicken nuggets etc
I sprayed it all and washed with washing up liquid
Cleaned the bath with anti bac
Sprayed disinfectant cover the bath, taps, bought a.new shower head and hose because I accidentally dropped it into the freezer drawer
Mopped up all the ice from the kitchen and sprayed switch disinfectant
I can't stop thinking I'm going to poison my DC with bacteria from the food? I feel like it's.soread through the whole house now because I took the drawers from the kitchen to the bathroom and some could have melted onto the carpet
I sat in my bed too with the clothes that had got splashed water on them so could I have spread bacteria to the bed as well?
I sprayed so much disinfectant aerosol spray that I'm worried that's going to poison my kids too if they touch the surfaces then their mouths? It's similar to the Dettol stuff but fabulous brand is that possible to get poisoned from once it's dry?
I have OCD but this is one of those times where.i can't work out if it's a legitimate concern or I'm just being OTT by worrying so much I'd be really grateful to get others opinions on what would he a normal rational precaution to take defrosting a freezer?

It’s alright, honestly you won’t have transferred any bacteria anywhere.

vodkaredbullgirl · 10/02/2021 10:18

No you wont get food poisoning.

00100001 · 10/02/2021 10:19

You bought a new shower head? Confused

Your actions aren't "normal"

You need some help with your OCD.

giletrouge · 10/02/2021 10:20

Gently, it all seems OTT to me. I would take none of these precautions in defrosting a freezer. Just remove food, defrost, put food back, wipe surfaces where food's been with cloth. I'm so sorry you're feeling like this, it sounds really frightening.

No-one's going to be poisoned with anything. Really.

FossilisedFanny · 10/02/2021 10:23

Think rationally, how will you get food poisoning? You have to actually eat food that has gone off and you won’t be doing this will you?

LApprentiSorcier · 10/02/2021 10:23

You'll be fine. I doubt you'd get food poisoning from defrosted breadcrumbs even if you'd decided to eat them. The risk is tiny - the food would have to be contaminated in the first place, which with freezer products that are quick-frozen after production, is highly unlikely.

I don't take any particular precautions when defrosting the freezer - I just wipe up any mess with my normal kitchen spray, and wash my hands afterwards as I would after any cleaning task.

LibrariesGiveUsPower45321 · 10/02/2021 10:26

Unless you’re Secretly storing vials of bacterium in your freezer you’ll be fine.

Wiping down with fairy liquid is all you need to kill anything normally stored in a freezer.

Saying this as gently as possible- have you talked to anyone about the level of anxiety you are experiencing?

yearinyearout · 10/02/2021 10:27

Are you serious? As PP said, you need help with your anxiety/ocd.

Okokokbear · 10/02/2021 10:29

I'm not sure this level or worry is totally proportionate. I have anxiety and stuff like this can run away with me when I'm not doing well. I was once convinced I was going yo get a brain parachute from the water at home. So embarrassing now I think of it. So I mean this in the nicest way but a re you ok?

MereDintofPandiculation · 10/02/2021 10:35

You put food into the freezer to preserve it. You take out the food and cook it and eat it. In some cases (ice cream, bread, fruit) you don't even cook it before eating it.

Crumbs stuck to the drawers are still the same food. If a whole fish finger had stuck to the drawer or a piece of bread, you would have been perfectly safe to eat it. So no need to worry about contaminating the bath or the bed.

What do I do? Take all the food out and stack it in a heap covered with a thick layer of insulation. Let the freezer defrost, occasionally using a wooden spatula to leaver off big chunks of ice, which I collect in the grill pan. When I've finished, I tip the ice and water down the sink and rinse the grill pan and leave it to drain. I put the spatula in the dish washer. I wipe out the freezer with kitchen spray. Wipe down the trays with kitchen spray or washing up liquid. Wipe up any drips on the floor with a cloth which I then put into the hot wash. Refill the freezer.

I can't remember when I or my family have had food poisoning or any form of stomach upset - we're talking decades.

Oldraver · 10/02/2021 10:37

You need help.

Spaying all that shit in your house is not good for you or for breathing it in

YouWontBelieveYourEyes · 10/02/2021 10:37

Sorry OP but you need help with your OCD, nothing you have written is something you should be stressing about. You bought a new shower head because it fell into the drawer?

emmathedilemma · 10/02/2021 10:39

I think you're more likely to poison your kids with anti-bac spray overload than you are with bits of frozen fish finger crumbs!!
Seriously, you need help.

TheNorthWind · 10/02/2021 10:44

Kindly OP, this is your OCD. Everything you did past washing up and rinsing the drawers in the bath was unnecessary.

There were no dangerous bacteria on the food. Nor any reason why there should have been. Nothing could have spread through the house as you are describing.

You and your children are perfectly safe.

But you need some additional help managing or treating your OCD. That is causing you a real problem and you need to tell a medical professional and seek help. Tell them about this incident, just like you've told us.

purplebagladylovesgin · 10/02/2021 10:46

My lovely it's ok, you have to consume the raw nuggets to get food poisoning.

I get 'wonky brain', that's what I call it when my OCD takes over my rational brain. I recognise when I'm getting bad and I will warn my husband.

I'm pretty germophobic when my OCD is bad so I understand your logic at this point. Please be reassured neither you or your children are at any risk at all from food poisoning. Absolutely zero.

You'll have a sparkling bathroom and a clean freezer that's all.

LApprentiSorcier · 10/02/2021 10:52

My lovely it's ok, you have to consume the raw nuggets to get food poisoning.

It's unlikely you'd get food poisoning even if you did that. Obviously it's not a recommended course of action, but people do over-estimate the likelihood of getting food poisoning in any given scenario. To get food poisoning, food has to be contaminated in the first instance. Raw does not equal contaminated. Cooking removes the danger if there is contamination, and obviously makes the food palatable, but 9 times out of 10 you would come to no harm eating raw meat. Especially not something like a chicken nugget which has been processed to buggery and packed full of preservatives.

AryaStarkWolf · 10/02/2021 10:53

You're being OTT, I think on top of your OCD, these times are probably making it worse as well, the fear of germs etc and just because of all the restrictions and spending too much time at home too

Choice4567 · 10/02/2021 11:17

I’m not sure which thing you are worried about. Which part are you worried will give you food poisoning?

HopingForOurRainbowBaby · 10/02/2021 11:38

Massively OTT!! No one is going to get food poisoning just because you cleaned the freezer draw inside the bath. I regularly clean mine like that, scoop out the bits of stray frozen veg and crumbs that have gone into the bath rinse the bath out, spray with anti bac and rinse again. Not had food poisoning from doing that. No one would've got food poisoning just because you accidentally dropped the shower head inside the freezer tray and no one is going to get food poisoning just because you might have dripped water onto the carpets or your bed. You need help cos this isn't normal!!

Ch3rish · 10/02/2021 11:42

I know posters on here think food poisoning will set in if they eat anything at 1 minute past midnight on the day it goes out of date but this is madness by anyone's standards

What has a new shower head got to do with defrosting your freezer?

I agree with everyone else, you need some kind of MH help if you aren't already getting any. Your actions are totally irrational

makingmammaries · 10/02/2021 11:43

Do you keep chemical weapons in your freezer or something? YABU.

3JsMa · 10/02/2021 11:47

No,you will be fine.

Iknowwhatudidlastsummer · 10/02/2021 11:51

Using the bath for that is pretty grim
but unless you use the bathtube to make food or you have a habit to lick it, you are BU

MrDarcysMa · 10/02/2021 11:56

Absolutely nothing to worry about op but I think you need to ask for more support with your mental health from your gp Thanks

MrDarcysMa · 10/02/2021 11:57

@makingmammaries

Do you keep chemical weapons in your freezer or something? YABU.
Op has said she has OCD and is clearly struggling with it. This is unhelpful.
