What on Earth has happened to DD back?

DD is 15 and currently boarding at school since January. She said yesterday she had a "sore bit " on her back. I said could she manage until she comes home on Friday, and put some E45 cream on it in the meantime.

Today she sent me this photo. Shock.
I have alerted school, and they are contacting the local gp tomorrow.

But has anyone got any thoughts?

Thank you.

Possibly a rash or dermatitis along the bra line that she's then scratched?

Icancount · 09/02/2021 19:27

She's had a large plaster over it today. You can see the marks of that.
She has not had a fight or accident.

It really looks like a graze to me. Does she really not know how she did it? Do you think she’s been drinking if she doesn’t?

Icancount · 09/02/2021 19:28

OOOoooooh - school washing powder maybe?? but wouldn't that affect more areas?

I react to bio washing detergent

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 09/02/2021 19:31

Looks more like a carpet burn to me

MissBaskinIfYoureNasty · 09/02/2021 19:33

Are you sure someone didn't do it to her? To me it looks like someone has clawed her with their nails!

Meredithgrey1 · 09/02/2021 19:33

Oh how weird, my toddler has something very similar on her upper back and we cannot work out what it is.

sadpapercourtesan · 09/02/2021 19:34

It's a graze, you can see the individual scratch marks all going in the same direction!

PolkadotsAndMoonbeams · 09/02/2021 19:34

It looks like she might have fallen on astroturf — it's vicious stuff! It looks a bit bruised as well as scraped.

Either that, or (if she's pushed her bra up for the photo) that's been bothering her and she scratched it. It does look a bit red to the right of the plaster mark too, so could be that.

MrsMoastyToasty · 09/02/2021 19:34

Is there a raised area under the biggest scratch?

MadeForThis · 09/02/2021 19:35

It looks like a graze or carpet burn.

singsingbluesilver · 09/02/2021 19:35

I think it's a rash and she has been scratching it. I would suspect washing powder.

LIZS · 09/02/2021 19:36

Has she scratched it?

fallfallfall · 09/02/2021 19:38

It’s been itchy, she’s been scratching. The brown discoloration is from the prolonged scarring or may be the reason it’s itchy. Either way see a dermatologist. Probably hormone related as well.

Looks like a bruise under the scratch

huuuuunnnndderrricks · 09/02/2021 19:39

I got marks like that from rattan furniture with no cushions once . My skin is really daft though !

RubyGoat · 09/02/2021 19:41

I'd say she's allergic to the detergent. She's got an irritated area on one side, but also a clear line wher her bra strap presumably goes. The scratch marks are probably from the subsequent itching. DD, DH & I are all very sensitive to laundry detergent, we recently switched from one brand of unscented non-bio to a different brand of unscented non-bio & are regretting it, we are having to donate an unopened bottle & bin the open one. We all reacted similarly to the OP's DD. Never use biological unless it's as a pre-wash, for very dirty or muddy items.

That’s what I can see too!

Sex burn...

Sorry probably not what you wanted to hear.

IAmongstTheWorld · 09/02/2021 19:46

Apologies I see others have politely named it "carpet burn".

Cheap boarding school carpets are killer for it.

WouldstrokeTomHardy · 09/02/2021 19:50

Is it itchy? Has she been scratching it?

dementedma · 09/02/2021 19:52
