What on Earth has happened to DD back?

DD is 15 and currently boarding at school since January. She said yesterday she had a "sore bit " on her back. I said could she manage until she comes home on Friday, and put some E45 cream on it in the meantime.

Today she sent me this photo. Shock.
I have alerted school, and they are contacting the local gp tomorrow.

But has anyone got any thoughts?

Thank you.

Could she have been in contact with fibre glass?

speakout · 10/02/2021 06:28

It looks like an injury.

Are you sure she isn't withholding information?

Cosyjimjamsforautumn · 10/02/2021 09:30

I see bruising, scratches and the marks of an unnecessarily large dressing. I would be worried by both skin abrasions that she has been out in the snow and sledging - or being bullied. Would she open up if it were the latter?

IAmongstTheWorld · 10/02/2021 10:14

@Mostlylurkingiam because in many boarding schools it's the only option and because the child is vulnerable with an autism diagnosis.

GP is entirely appropriate - particularly if the child has a good relationship with one.

Thanks all. GP appointment later this pm. DD happy to go with HM, and school requested written transcript of appointment as DD won't retain the info herself.

Unlikely to be bullying, but obviously can't rule it out 100%. There are only a handful of pupils actually in school at the moment.

GP says just dry skin. No infection, and no concerns raised.

Phew.
I'll see how it is on Friday when she comes home.

Can't wait to see her properly.

Great. I'm glad it was nothing concerning op.

PicaK · 10/02/2021 18:43

Cool.

CaraDuneRedux · 10/02/2021 19:00

That must be a relief for you.

Can those of you that are berating the op for wanting her daughter to see a gp please back off.

She has absolutely done the right thing for two reasons. Firstly , if your child is in pain you take them to a doctor. Simple. Secondly , if her daughter had actually been injured it's very important that there is a medical record of it as she was away at school when the issue began and she may have needed proof of dates/injury type etc.

TallTowerFan
Thank you.

If there was bullying going on, I would want an independent verdict as to whether her injury was caused by harm, or by dry skin.

Now I can rest assured it is dry skin, and that she continues to be safe at school.

It is one of the worse aspects of boarding, when your child is injured/ill, and you are not there. But before this becomes a boarding school bashing thread, it is absolutely the right and best place for her to be.
