Lost tampon

Sorry if this is tmi. I'm 39 and this has never happened before. I tried to put a tampon in the other day and it didn't feel comfortable, so removed it and was only spotting so didn't worry. Today I noticed an awful smell even after bathing. I felt a bit bruised down below aswell. I thought I better check and quickly after looking with a mirror and baring down I could see a tampon in there. It's probably been up there 2 or 3 days 😳. Am I at risk of TSS or infection now after removing it?

Just get it out, then worry about that! If you can see it, I assume you can reach it?

Bobbybobbins · 04/02/2021 19:07

I would get it out then phone 111 for advice

thecatsarecrazy · 04/02/2021 19:08

Yes I've got it out. It came out fine once I knew it was there. I never gave it a thought before. Thought as an after thought double check it's not a lost tampon

If you're currently well then I wouldn't worry at all. If you start to feel ill or have a fever then I would contact your GP/111 asap (you are overwhelmingly likely to be totally fine though).

LindaEllen · 04/02/2021 19:14

It'll probably be fine. I'll admit to doing this once right at the end of a period and I forgot about it for 2 days. Nothing bad happened. And if you get any symptoms of TSS you'll notice them immediately. Obviously call 111 if you do.

KnobblyWand · 04/02/2021 19:14

Are you feeling well?

Watch out for symptoms, which are: a high temperature, a rash, cold-like symptoms and sickness and diarrhoea.

thecatsarecrazy · 04/02/2021 19:17

Thank you. The only worry was the foul smell but I hope that was just the tampon 🙁. I felt a bit bruised earlier but no pain like cramps or anything. Feel ok

This once happened to me, I don't recall a foul smell so I'd maybe request a phone call with practise nurse or GP, but otherwise as said just be watchful for any symptoms.

Emmelina · 04/02/2021 19:26

Just keep an eye out for symptoms, from what I remember reading you’ll start feel flu-ey. Otherwise, any weird discharge in case you’ve caused a bit of infection up there.

Bookwords · 04/02/2021 19:29

Watch out for symptoms, but otherwise really don't worry.

sunflowersandbuttercups · 04/02/2021 19:32

Even if you do leave a tampon in too long, TSS is still pretty rare.

Just keep an eye out for symptoms but you'll likely be just fine!

CottonSock · 04/02/2021 19:35

I once pulled out a tampon then felt another one. So pulled out 2nd tampon. I was a drunken student, but god knows how I squeezed two in there. Anyway, just a silly tampon story to make you laugh.

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 04/02/2021 19:36

I've had one too, a few times actually. Only once did I have to see a nurse to get it out. I've stopped inserting a 'chaser' tampon too (sorry, tmi). I don't know why I ever thought that would help. Blush

LyingWitchInTheWardrobe · 04/02/2021 19:37

Oh, I'm not alone, CottonSock, a fellow over-tamponer! Grin

CottonSock · 04/02/2021 19:40

@LyingWitchInTheWardrobe there you go. I literally thought I was then only person who had ever double tamponed Grin

Pineapples3 · 04/02/2021 19:43

I’m sure you’ll be fine now it’s out OP. I ‘lost’ one up there like you for over a week before!! I went to the GP with odd spotting & a bad smell and he examined me & discoverer said tampon.

Kill. Me. Now. Blush

LaceyBetty · 04/02/2021 19:43

I've done this. So gross, but you'll be fine.

dottiedodah · 04/02/2021 19:44

I think to call 111/GP just to be on the safe side .

Sarahandco · 04/02/2021 19:46

It happened to me years ago and there was a foul smell. I was absolutely fine.

Blame having a small child 😫. Brain in a fog most of the time

Just look out for symptoms and if you notice anything get seen ASAP. I've had TSS and I hadn't even left the bastard tampon in for long. I went downhill very quickly (in the space of about 20 mins I was confused to buggery). You'll know if symptoms start.

Eileithyiaa · 04/02/2021 19:54

The first thing I noticed was feeling flushed, like instant temp and my head started pounding, vomiting, very confused very quickly. I also swelled up and looked like I had sunburn.

JovialNickname · 04/02/2021 20:20

I've done this once before, suddenly felt something "down there" and there was an old- ish tampon, lodged sideways (boak)

The smell was foul, so embarrassing. But once I'd got it out and flushed it there were no further problems. x

CorianderBee · 04/02/2021 20:20

The foul smell is the rotting tampon, my sister has removed them at the hospital and says they reek.

I'd call 111 and follow their advice and I'd order/buy some Canesten Pessiary just in case it messes with you and you get thrush.

CorianderBee · 04/02/2021 20:26

If it makes you feel any better this happened to my best mate but she couldn't hook it out. Her new boyfriend had to get it out for her while she lay legs akimbo
