To ask if £50 on a candle is worth it?

Close friends milestone birthday is coming up this month. Years ago we had all agreed that we would have a spa day for her birthday.

Obviously that is not an option at the moment and we can't even book for the future as don't know when spas will be open.

So I wanted send her something to recreate the spa at home experience. About £50 budget.

She's really into luxury skin brands etc . I'm not and therefore a bit shocked by some of the prices.

So is a neom candle at £50 worth it, or is there something just as good and nasty expensive.

Just feel like sending only a candle doesn't seem like much

OK. So I'm definitely not going to get a cheap candle.

Just need to decide which one to get

Neom is usually on offer somewhere.

Diptyque, jo loves, jo Malone or cire du trudon would get my vote. If she’s into that sort of thing it’s totally worth it. If I was given Yankee candle I’d probably give it away as it’s not my cup of tea at all.

CounsellorTroi · 01/02/2021 22:39

Might as well set fire to £50 note. Of course if it's a gift and something she wouldn't spend on herself a bit different, but I wouldn't spend that on a candle myself.

doadeer · 01/02/2021 22:39

Espa do lovely candles which feel luxurious but cheaper than neom.

You could make a little spa box with the candle, a magazine, a facemask etc

SamLovesLembasBread · 01/02/2021 22:39

I think scent preferences make it tricky, unless you know for certain what she likes and that she would appreciate an expensive luxury candle.

I love scents (essential oils, atm), but I'd think it was a waste of money to spend so much on a single candle. Someone else might simply feel pampered, though.

Sorry, not helpful, but it really depends on your friend.

Ontheboardwalk · 01/02/2021 22:42

In a year when special birthdays can’t be recognised and you would have spent more for her birthday, I would spend that extra on the special candle if you can afford it and she will appreciate it

Parkmama · 01/02/2021 22:43

Another vote for White Company candles, slightly cheaper, great scent, last for ages, lovely packaging, luxury feel (unlike yankee for example) but better value than Jo Malone etc

An alternative to the candle idea if your friend is into expensive skincare and if you want to recreate the spa experience, then the Aromatherapy Associates brand is nice and they do these lovely bath/shower oils

@GinaJaffacake

If she’s into candles then yes, sure. If someone bought that for me I’d smile and thank them then it would be straight to the charity shop or the bin if it was stinky.
Straight to ebay for me.
peachgreen · 01/02/2021 22:51

The Neom candles that turn into oils for your skin are absolutely worth every penny.

2020iscancelled · 01/02/2021 22:56

Neom no, I was so disappointed with mine.

Jo Malone or Diptyque yes!
They smell divine and will last a long time. They really do fill the house with fragrance. I think I’d say Diptyque over Jo Malone.

Cheap candles aren’t worth it. Go mid range with a decent quality at least. The white company are quite reasonable.

Elieza · 01/02/2021 22:58

They have the neom candle that turns into a skin treatment as part of a two piece set of neom things on qvc U.K. for £45. A three piece set is £58. Can’t remember what’s in them. Have a look.

Sometimes they have an offer on to let you pay in interest free instalments too.

And if you don’t like after 60 days you get your money back you just list the postage cost, even if you’ve used half the product. No problem.

So you could get that for her and if she hated it you could always return it and get something else.

PickAChew · 01/02/2021 23:00

No. It's a fucking candle.

fallfallfall · 01/02/2021 23:02

only if organic bees wax from a local hobbyist apiary....and they wouldn't charge you that much.

ArosAdraDrosDolig · 01/02/2021 23:06

Yankee candles are considered cheap?! Blimey! I thought I was really treating myself buying a £17 candle instead of going to home bargains.

RoisinD · 01/02/2021 23:07

Have a look on QVC UK. Very good value Neom sets on offer

HighSpecWhistle · 01/02/2021 23:07

Quality over quantity when it comes to gifts. I'd much rather one fancy, high quality candle than a cheaper one with a few other cheap things.

Could you and your friends go in together? You could get a lot more for £100/£150 etc. A nice throw to go with it, or a nice robe..

savethewales · 01/02/2021 23:08

Jo Malone created some scents for Zara and it includes candles. Not sure if that helps x

Elieza · 01/02/2021 23:08

You burn the candle and pour the melted bit once cooled onto your skin for a skin treatment. Or something. It sounded amazing on the programme. Must be like a paraffin wax treatment for your hands, makes them all soft and baby's bum like Grin

Barracker · 01/02/2021 23:09

I have a large Christmas Neom candle and chrome lid I won in a raffle years ago, divine Christmassy clovey fragrance. Each Christmas I lift it out and place it delicately on a coffee table surrounded by perfect pine cones. Each January I carefully pack it back away into its exquisite box, and its chrome candle cap into its own exquisite box.

I don't light the bugger though, are you mad, it's worth £70. I will never, as long as I live, spend that kind of money myself on smelly wax. I shall just keep lifting it out and putting it back each Christmas like a loon.

icelollycraving · 01/02/2021 23:10

Neom are nice but imho not my favourite for the price tag. Diptyque are beautiful. I love good quality candles. If this is a special gift, I’d go Dipyque.

TokenGinger · 01/02/2021 23:11

Have you checked out QVC? They have some brilliant offers on Neom packages including the candle for around £55.

Forgothowmuchlhatehomeschoolin · 01/02/2021 23:14

Bloody hell l always thought yankee were expensive!! Shows what l knowGrin

Bluntness100 · 01/02/2021 23:15

Yes I think so, I have bought my daughter three now, she loves the happy one.

Sounds like she loves that kind of thing, and will probably take pride of place and she will enjoy it, use it for special occasions. It’s a great idea.

I’d defintely do neom over diptyque in this price range, as with diptyque you’ll get a tiny candle.
