A much beloved book
A fantastic BBC adaptation mini series

Then the horror of THAT awful, awful Keira Knightly film.

I knew it was bad but I rewatched it recently and it is just terrible.

I will concede the film itself is fine, the locations beautiful and no issues with the acting per se. But it is so far away from the real P&P it’s actually criminal.

So AIBU?

YABU - it’s wonderful and sums up the story to perfection.

YANBU - it’s an abomination

YANBU. Nuff said!

HumphreyCobblers · 29/01/2021 14:46

There are thinks I do like about it. Costumes are superb.

Stupid ending absolutely sucks

Bouncebacker · 29/01/2021 14:46

It’s pants.

Brenda Blethyn is pretty good as Mrs Bennet - but that’s about it

Beamur · 29/01/2021 14:46

I'm in the middle. I don't think it's the best ever adaptation, but actually quite liked KK and rather fancy Matthew McFadyen..

2020iscancelled · 29/01/2021 14:47

@Bouncebacker yes the cast isn’t bad at all tbf.

@Beamur

I really like KK too but I didn’t like her as Lizzie

Why would you rewatch it??

I wouldn't say its an abomination but it is massively inferior to the Colin Firth & Jennifer Ehle version

It was an odd choice considering how well loved the BBC version was. It was never going to live up to expectations

Keira Knightley ruins anything - I can't get past her huge jaw!

VegetableLove · 29/01/2021 14:49

YANBU - Keira Knightley is too beautiful to be Elizabeth - who is fairly easy in the eye but definitely a girl whose character makes her attractive - for a start.

And don't get me started on the snogging Confused

katy1213 · 29/01/2021 14:49

She looks like she's devour Darcy for breakfast!

VegetableLove · 29/01/2021 14:50

Jennifer Ehle was perfect.

BusterTheBulldog · 29/01/2021 14:50

Love KK but I hated the way she played Lizzie. So casual! I do find myself watching it when it’s on though...

Good question!

I was up with the youngest and it felt a soothing choice to have on late at night.

I wasn’t keen the first time but wondered if it was worth a second chance, grower as it were.

It was not.

Loved it. The BBC Colin Firth one is excruciatingly slow, tedious and unconvincing.
But I realise that is a minority opinion on MN Grin so I’ll get my coat....

Ginevere · 29/01/2021 14:51

I absolutely love it! And I’m a bit of a book purist.

Very confused about the snogging?!? I don’t recall anyone snogging!

CharlotteCollinsneeLucas · 29/01/2021 14:51

Matthew McFadden is wet. (Literally, in the most cringe-inducing scene.) Nothing like how I imagine Darcy from the book.

I wonder if it introduced the story to a new group of people, though?

2020iscancelled · 29/01/2021 14:51

@VegetableLove

Jennifer Ehle was perfect.
yes absolutely

I can’t imagine a Lizzie which isn’t her tbh.

I agree, he’s a wet lettuce. And he doesn’t appear proud or reserved, just miserable. That scene is just Confused

And Bingley. WTF. I don’t even know where to start with his casting.

There's snogging? I haven't watched it - am a devotee of the Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth version so never saw the point, but part of its joy is that is no kissing until right at the end, but lots of burning glances.

Beamur · 29/01/2021 14:55

Jennifer Ehle is the definitive Lizzie though.

How to be a bitch in 10 words or less.

A bit mean - she can’t help her looks. Like a pp poster I actually think she was too pretty, too modern and too slim to make a convincing Lizzie.

While she’s not my favourite actor she’s a solid, dependable one (you know exactly what you’re getting with her so I knew I wouldn’t like her as Lizzie before I watched it). I thought she played her role in Atonement brilliantly.

unicornpower · 29/01/2021 14:58

Awful film! It irked me how they portray the bennets as almost farmers in the film whereas they were 'comfortable' in the book. The BBC adaptation is perfect and I honestly don't see the need for more remakes 🤣

KK is not lizzie in the slightest but I find her excruciatingly irritating anyway so I am biased haha

Thepilotlightsgoneout · 29/01/2021 14:59

There’s no snogging?!

I liked it. Which parts are not true to the book?

The story felt rushed compared to the BBC but then that was six hours long as oppose to the film’s two.
