The mumsnet haircut

Is it time? Last hair cut was in summer some time. It's grown a lot and I don't even bother blow drying and straightening - it just looks a mess so to tidy I pull up in a clip.

So any success stories? Do I back away slowly and wait until Easter (hopefully) and continue as is?

AIBU to consider it?

I was desperate and carefully followed the instructions on this vid. I was so impressed I have trimmed it a second time (months & months later). I’m not saying it would stand up to close scrutiny by a hairdresser but I’m pretty happy with it. I watched several different people’s videos before taking the plunge, this seemed the most foolproof way to do it. Good luck!

She does a longer video here

Ah, thank you for this! I’m not sure I necessarily trust myself to cut my own hair but I’m getting seriously desperate!

I am about 90% on giving it a go (though probably best to do it without a glass of wine if my hand).

I’d go for it (and have done).
As long as you don’t go straight in hacking loads off it’s honestly fine, you can always take more off if you need to.

BlessedBeTheFruitCake · 26/01/2021 19:15

PS. I used a Brad Mondo YouTube video.
Good luck!

It's totally easy. I haven't been to the salon since I discovered it. Is a touch anxiety inducing the first time, I will admit. Only cut a little off to see how you like it as it's so quick that you can always do it again in a week or two.

Just make sure you brush and brush until the hair is very smooth and that you have caught every hair that is long enough to be cut before you put it in to the pony tail. DO NOT tug the pony tail to tighten it or you will have to start brushing again.

Chunkymenrock · 26/01/2021 19:22

I do it loads and it's very easy and turns out fine, but the trouble is, it doesn't touch the back which obviously gets longer and longer.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 26/01/2021 19:27

I am planning to try it with the pony tail much further back because the back of my hair is awful and really needs shortening. From my research it seems that depending on where you place the pony tail before cutting affects how severe the layers are. The unicorn one from the vid above gives the most extreme layers I think? I'll post again if I actually do it...!

DamsonBramble · 26/01/2021 19:38

I got mine cut in December so am ok for the time being, but in the first lockdown I did the ponytail cut for the front and it came out ok. An improvement on its uncut state. It did need redoing after a month which is a lot quicker than if I go to a salon. My dds cut the back for me, which came out fine, albeit a lot shorter than I imagined. I did burst out laughing when I looked in the mirror as it was longer on one side than the other as well as shorter than expected, but they managed to tidy it up

Frenchfancy · 26/01/2021 19:42

I've been doing it for years. I hate hairdressers. Sorry, that's not fair, I hate Going to the hairdresser's.

SatsumasOrClementines · 26/01/2021 19:44

The unicorn one is so shit, please don’t. It makes really extreme layers and barely trims the back at all. So many people look all mullet-y after it.

I’m not against diy haircuts - it’s just that particular one. If you want a good one I second the Brad Mondo suggestion.

AGnu · 26/01/2021 19:44

I tried it once but didn't like the effect. Now I straighten it, divide down the middle at the back, keeping my normal side-parting on top, then brush it forward into an under-chin ponytail & do little snips up into it until it's relatively straight across the bottom. I'll usually need to snip a few stray bits but my hair naturally hangs over the front of my shoulders & this gives it a nice straight line. I hate having my head touched & I'm delighted to have found a way to do it myself!

Oysterbabe · 26/01/2021 19:51

I want to do this too. My hair is just awful atm.

MoMuntervary · 26/01/2021 20:02

I have shoulder length wavy hair. I did the MN haircut but did three sequential pony tails: on top (not quite at the front), middle (typical pony tail height) and low at the back. One after the other starting at the top. This seems to sort out the back issue. I really like it and may never go to the salon again (I hear ya, @Frenchfancy)

Disclaimer: my hair is wavy/curly. This may be a shit idea for straight hair!

peak2021 · 26/01/2021 20:05

Haircuts- so 2019!!!

BashfulClam · 26/01/2021 20:33

I can’t do that as my hair is so fine layers look terrible.

yesbueno · 26/01/2021 20:41

I did it once. Never again. It looked awful, like really blunt layers in a circle around my head

OhCaptain · 26/01/2021 20:43

What is it?! Confused

MsJaneAusten · 26/01/2021 20:50

I nearly posted this exact question at the weekend. Now I’m watching for tips!

ShandlersWig · 26/01/2021 20:52

I looked like a mix of Pat Benatar, Jon bon Jovi and Billy Ray Cyrus when I did it.

Mary46 · 26/01/2021 20:54

Reading with interest! Mine got awful so much bulk in it so thick.

AwaAnBileYerHeid · 26/01/2021 21:08

For some reason, I thought this was going to be a thread about the type of haircut you would expect a typical mumsnetter to have...I have no idea why I thought that though! My guess was going to be a Nicola Sturgeon type do!

BrainFoggerty · 26/01/2021 21:13

I haven't had mine cut since Nov 19! Been shielding so too nervous to go to hairdressers when open. I've so many split ends now it needs sorting. It's past shoulder length wavy & I'm so scared of trying to cut it myself, need courage

Phymp · 26/01/2021 21:14

Last March my hair was just growing back after chemo. It was horrible fluff, so I clippered it.
After that nothing can be as drastic!
I had a well overdue hair appointment booked for 6th January so I cut it myself. It's short so couldn't do the MN cut but I just snipped away with scissors and it came out quite well in a pixie cut.

Beancounter1 · 26/01/2021 21:17

This is the best one I can find if you don't want layers.

Beancounter1 · 26/01/2021 21:36

This one is a bit more involved, more like a hairdresser would do it, especially at the back in horizontal layers.

I'm definitely going to try one of these - I don't want unicorn layers! (Tried that once and hated it.)
