The mumsnet haircut

Is it time? Last hair cut was in summer some time. It's grown a lot and I don't even bother blow drying and straightening - it just looks a mess so to tidy I pull up in a clip.

So any success stories? Do I back away slowly and wait until Easter (hopefully) and continue as is?

AIBU to consider it?

I just cut mine last night for the third time since march - or probably December 2019 tbh. I section mine into two pigtails close to the name of my neck and then out two extra bobbles further down, just above where I want to cut. I make sure they're smooth and equal, and take about an inch off. Then I make vertical snips into the bottom of the pigtails to soften the ends, any mistakes aren't noticeable.

Nape of neck not name
Put not out!

Didn’t someone on here once describe themselves, after the MN haircut, as looking ‘like Suzi Quatro’s fat nan’? Grin

BogRollBOGOF · 26/01/2021 22:03

I MN cut, then take off the extra length at the back with a pair of pigtails a la Brad Mondo. I have a wave in my hair that's quite forgiving, and it's thick enough to need some layers to lighten it.

@ShandlersWig

I looked like a mix of Pat Benatar, Jon bon Jovi and Billy Ray Cyrus when I did it.

This is definitely my concern. Split ends are probably preferable.

Do I straighten my hair out first? I presume it will be easier to keep the hair in an orderly fashion if I do?

I've done it a few times and it's always been fine. I used this video the first time

BornOnTwelthNight · 27/01/2021 15:07

I used to do this when my hair was really long, but would need a lot of tweaking thinning and blending out the layers to stop it looking choppy also didn’t like the v at the back so would chop that off.

Also a lot of people don’t realise, if your hair already has layers and isn’t one length you will only be cutting the front unless you take your cut past the shortest layer at the back.

I’ve seen so many people fuck it up on YouTube because of this.

@AwaAnBileYerHeid

For some reason, I thought this was going to be a thread about the type of haircut you would expect a typical mumsnetter to have...I have no idea why I thought that though! My guess was going to be a Nicola Sturgeon type do!
Ha, me too! I have always thought it would be 50/50 yummy-mummy streaks or 'wacky' coloured short cuts.
thereisonlyoneofme · 27/01/2021 15:48

What about those of us with short hair though ! It still gets out of control

PattyPan · 27/01/2021 16:03

I haven’t done it loads but a while back I trimmed the front of my hair to the length I wanted it and then got DP to cut the back to the same length and it looked fine!

IthinkIm · 27/01/2021 16:07

Do it do it do it and then post photos.

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 30/01/2021 20:02

I did it! I can't post pics because I can't risk being identified (awful ex stalker) but I am pleased (deeply relieved).

I did a pony tail high at the back of my head, to get gentle layers, and cut off about 2cm.

Then divided into bunches and chopped the back another 2cm. Then let it down and brushed back to one side of my neck to straighten the middle bit, then the other side to make it as even as possible. Then I cut each side to even out between the back length and the front length.

My hair is just above shoulder length, and quite curly. The curls definitely work in my favour in covering mistakes. It's not perfect but a definite improvement Grin
