Calls from ' HMRC'

the80sweregreat · 22/01/2021 14:30

Not a aibu , but posting for traffic.

Had two calls on my mobile this week about 'tax fraud ' in my name and if I don't press one they will come and arrest me! I hung up straight away and I know it's a scam call but it has shook me up a bit!
Is anyone else getting these ?
Is there anything I can do about them?
Thanks

There's an HMRC number you can report the calls to: 0300 123 2050 (I've had some myself)

Justkeeprollingalong · 22/01/2021 14:40

Had one of these calls at 7.52 this morning!

CuriousaboutSamphire · 22/01/2021 14:41

Yes! I had a few this week too!

I reported it.

TeenPlusTwenties · 22/01/2021 14:43

I've had a text saying they want to give me a text rebate and to click on a link...

the80sweregreat · 22/01/2021 14:44

Thank you.
They are horrible calls.

I’ve had a couple this week, as soon as DD heard the start of the call she told me to get ready to be arrested - needless to say I haven’t been arrested!

ConfusedCatsAreNotAThing · 22/01/2021 14:46

I had one a few months back. I am still waiting to be arrested.

2me2u2u2me · 22/01/2021 14:47

My son's just called me to say he's had one, obviously worried, so I checked the number, it's a hoax. The HMRC would never phone you with an automated voice so never press numbers on your handset, you can get put through to people that can hack into anything if they get through to the right person, they're bloody clever feckers!

Redshoeblueshoe · 22/01/2021 14:51

Why would you think HMRC had your mobile number ?
HMRC would contact you by post.

FadedRed · 22/01/2021 14:51

Got lots of those and still at liberty. Current nuisance calls are ‘Amazon orders for iPads’ - seriously considering getting rid of the landline, but then I guess we’d just get them on our mobiles.
The recorded message scam called annoy me more than the real person ones though. I feel that if someone is trying to con me they should, at the very least, put some effort into it. Grin

the80sweregreat · 22/01/2021 14:51

I'm mid fifties and a little bit clued up on these scams, but if it was a much older or more vulnerable person it could really be a problem :(
I was shook up at how blunt it all was.' We will arrest you'.
Nasty people out to get folk.

Thank you again for your replies.
I guess I was just a bit spooked by what was said!

dontdisturbmenow · 22/01/2021 14:54

Haha, I had one just a couple of hours after I had transferred a large sum of money to HMRC for my self employment return.

I let them rumble on as it was quite funny!

TroysMammy · 22/01/2021 14:57

I had one yesterday. Even though it was an automated message it gave me pleasure to say "Oh do fuck off". I then went on the HRMC scam telephone calls website and reported it.

Movedtothedge · 22/01/2021 14:58

I had the same message a few months ago. I started laughing as soon as it said they will have me arrested and deleted it. I’m still ‘at large’ so safe to say it’s fraud Grin

Skihound · 22/01/2021 14:58

I have had quite a few not been arrested yet not sure if it is one of the scams where if you press one it links to a very expensive number or they just trying to get you to give them money either way still horrible scammers.

Redshoeblueshoe · 22/01/2021 14:59

I'm surprised you are mid 50's this surely can't be the first time you've had a call like this. There's been several amusing threads on here over the years about these types of calls, and the amusing responses to them. I agree with FadedRed they need to put more effort in 😂

Oddbutnotodd · 22/01/2021 15:04

I’ve had the NI number being fraudulently used as well as my ISP is going to cut off my internet. Even had a PPI from Gladstone Brookes call yesterday. All scams. If it’s a recorded voice just put the phone down. I’ve reported them on Whocalledme website.
If you think about the reality who will actually come and arrest you etc?

the80sweregreat · 22/01/2021 15:06

Honestly I've not had one on my mobile before!
Then I get two. 😀

bluecheesefan · 22/01/2021 15:16

If someone is under investigation for tax fraud, then they get an unannounced visit and all their paperwork and tech is seized.

HMRC don't ring people up to let them know in advance, and give them time to destroy the evidence. Grin

thosetalesofunexpected · 22/01/2021 15:18

@the80sweregreat

MechantGourmet · 22/01/2021 15:18

It's because there's only one week left until the tax return due date and they want to go for maximum scam! All the 'Microsoft' employees have been redeployed Wink

I have begun to ask them questions in quite appalling Hindi, and they can't wait to free up the line!
