Calls from ' HMRC'

Not a aibu , but posting for traffic.

Had two calls on my mobile this week about 'tax fraud ' in my name and if I don't press one they will come and arrest me! I hung up straight away and I know it's a scam call but it has shook me up a bit!
Is anyone else getting these ?
Is there anything I can do about them?
Thanks

I wouldn't mind being arrested either.
Be a break from it all , make a change! Chat up a nice policeman or a HMRC employee about my tax affairs.
Hmm, it could be exciting actually!

I'd hang up and forget it, but if you ever get a live call instead of a recorded message, you could always pretend they had got through to the police station.

Oreservoir · 22/01/2021 16:40

I’d love the real Hmrc to ring me. They’ve sent me a receipt for my self assessment 3 months ago and continually deny all knowledge and threaten me with late penalty fees.
Tbh the scammers might be more reasonable!

lazylump72 · 22/01/2021 16:40

I had 5 of these over 2 days..just hang up and report.

randomchap · 22/01/2021 16:51

I had one yesterday, they left a voicemail so I couldn't even press 1 at the right time.

The police haven't turned up yet. Very slack of them.

BT need to do something about number spoofing. At the moment scammers can call using your bank's number, HMRC number, any number they want, and they can keep calling back on different bogus numbers even if you block them.

BT need to fix it so that the number called from is the number that comes through on your phone.

I am amazed no one is holding BT accountable for the vast amount of fraud their systems are enabling, even supporting.

The caller ID is usually spoofed so reporting it won't do anything. The phone companies could handle these things much better - they have the true routing info about the call. They should provide a means to flag these sort of calls, like dial a specific code immediately after terminating the call and they can then analyse the routing info and block the calls at source, or charge increased access rates to carriers that continually transport these spam calls into their network.

Yes - had it yesterday. Emailed it to the HMRC phishing inbox.

ThePluckOfTheCoward · 22/01/2021 19:16

They are bastards and I agree with the previous comments that BT and rest of the phone companies should be doing more to stop these calls, they have the means to do so. It's horrible to be continually harassed in your own home this way.

The first lockdown gave us a short reprieve from these pond life, but this time round they seem busier than ever. I'm getting 2 or 3 nuisance calls a day to my landline, but I just let them go to the ansaphone.

FOJN · 22/01/2021 19:31

I had one of these about 2 weeks ago. I hung up and am still waiting to be arrested. Interestingly the call came within an hour of me trying to sort a problem with a VAT return on the HMRC website, I don't know if that's significant or coincidence.

notacooldad · 22/01/2021 19:39

I'm so glad we haven't got a landlines anymore.
I get scams on my mobile but it alerts me that it's potential fraud. I don't answer and then block.

AthelstaneTheUnready · 22/01/2021 19:45

HMRC definitely have a warrant out for my arrest.

Netflix need me to make up the last payment on my (non-existent) account.

My (non-existent) Apple account has invoiced me £X that I must pay now.

Paypal just need me to transfer £x.

Etc. etc. One of these days I'm going to overlook a genuine bill, since I just put the 'phone down/delete the emails automatically.

hitsvilleuk · 22/01/2021 19:48

I got one on my work phone ( the posh male voice one) I rang one as instructed and asked them when I was going to be arrested so I could get my bag ready?
They got really pissed off (the background just sounded like blokes in a pub) and then hung up on me!
