My DH went to the supermarket this afternoon. As he was walking up to get a trolley he saw a woman just about to put one back. He offered to take the trolley and give her £1 which she accepted. When he went to put the trolley back afterwards there was no £1 in it!

I did this once and realised when halfway home that I'd used a plastic token - totally forgot!

It's hardly up there with the Great Train Robbery and I doubt she's a criminal mastermind with a gang of urchins a la Fagin either. As PP have said it's more likely she forgot.

I seriously doubt she did it on purpose - most people would notice there was no £1 straightaway and it’d be too embarrassing! For the sake of ONE POUND! surely there are better scams.

OP your opinion of people is what's sad.

I rarely remember that I have a 'free' trolley, I generally put it back onto the 'chain' thing and only remember that it was free when the expected coin doesn't pop out.

Well when she got back to the car her Dad probably asked for it back anyway.

an old dear conned me at aldi like this she took my pound gave me the trolley and when i went to return it after my shopping it had an aldi token in stead of a pound

Did he get a full description of the suspect, OP? Maybe she is known to local police for defrauding the public? I think it’s worth logging with MI6 at this stage, too.

Once, DS and I walked past a lady waiting at the side of the car park for her taxi, she asked DS if he could take the trolley back to Iceland for her and he could keep the pound.

Result.

I'm duly chastened by your responses and realise on reflection that this was a stupid thing to start a thread about. I was just disappointed about not getting any responses to the one I started about Ivanka Trump not letting her Secret Service detail use her toilets - just seemed so Mumsnet.
