Sledging down street

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 09/01/2021 16:18

I can't work out if I'm being grumpy or not with this one. We live at the end of a cul-de-sac which is on an incline. Every time it snows all the kids on the street spend the whole day sledging down the middle of the road. This worries me for a few reasons:

  1. It's dangerous for them - they come shooting out of the bottom of the road which intersects with a slightly busier street where they could get hit by a car if someone is passing and doesn't know they're there.
  2. It polishes the road up to be extremely slippy and dangerous for anyone needing to get their car out of the street in an emergency.
  3. They could hit one of the cars parked on the street and do some damage.

I do know that kids haven't got much in the way of fun in their lives at the minute, but AIBU to think they should find somewhere less dangerous to play?

Reviving this one as I didn't get answers last time and it's bloody snowing again!

You are being grumpy, were you never a child?

We are in the middle of lockdown there is nothing to do and now people are complaining about children playing in the snow! Park your car outside of your street before it snows or before it settles if you need to go anywhere.

Have they actually hit a parked car? They could also hit a car playing on their bikes or you could hit a parked car when reversing.

You are being grumpy

BarbaraofSeville · 14/01/2021 12:05

I think them sledging out onto the busier road at the end and being hit by a car is the main worry. Especially if that road is also covered in snow and a driver is unlikely to be able to stop in time.

A child appearing out of nowhere in the road in front of you on a sledge is likely to make most drivers panic, slam on, and skid.

Aroundtheworldin80moves · 14/01/2021 12:05

If they are sledging out of the cul de sac onto a busier road, without looking, endangering themselves, then yes it is risky. It's a valid safety concern.

Purplethrow · 14/01/2021 12:07

It’s the most fun thing for kids to do ! Even adults have joined in when we’ve had heavy snow.

When we were kids we had a sloping drive and when it snowed we slid down it until it was like a skating rink. My dad came home late in the evening , drove the car onto the drive and only just managed to stop before he hit the garage door ! He wasn’t cross even then .
Don’t be a kill joy.

Bumblebee1980a · 14/01/2021 12:08

I think you're being a little bit grumpy, although it would annoy me too but I would have to accept it.

We shouldn't really going out in our cars much anyway. Also it doesn't snow often and it is better for their MH to be outside especially as screen will be longer due to home schooling.

It's a stressful time for us all in different ways. Try and see it from their point of view.

Unfortunately that is what you get on a cul de sac hence whey I'd never live on one! 🙈

peak2021 · 14/01/2021 12:18

Concern about ending up in a busier street is fine, but the other thoughts seem grumpy to me.

BlackDogBlues · 14/01/2021 12:19

You are being grumpy.

ServeTheServants · 14/01/2021 12:19

The worry about them ending up in a busy road is valid, all others are a bit grumpy I’m afraid.

hedgehogger1 · 14/01/2021 12:20

No you're not. I wouldn't want my car damaged and I'm sure the people telling you you're grumpy wouldn't either. Is there anywhere nearby they could go instead?

Godimabitch · 14/01/2021 12:21

Them sledging towards a busier road is insanely dangerous. Can you imagine driving along and a kid flies straight under your car? It would be horrific.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 14/01/2021 12:23

I'm not denying it's fun for them but I'm suggesting they should do it somewhere safer.

Also I only intend to take my car out in an emergency, eg if my vulnerable mum needed help.

I dont think you’re being unreasonable. Of course it’s fun, but sledging down a road, and onto another busier road isn’t safe and causes disruption. Are there other places locally they could go that are safer?

NoIDontWatchLoveIsland · 14/01/2021 12:48

Yabu and very much so for rubbing it in that you have enough snow for kids to sledge down the street.

Speaking of grumpy ! SmileSmile Snow would be lovely. It's tipping down and freezing here. Horribly dreary.
SquirtleSquad · 14/01/2021 12:57

I'd usually say you're being a miserable sod but one of our friends children very nearly lost an eye during the beast from the east... his make shift sledge (a fore sale board) went off course and hit a fence and he ended up with a fence post impaled into his face. He's had to have several surgeries around his eye socket which was broken and has horrific scars.

chocolatesaltyballs22 · 14/01/2021 12:57

I'll be even grumpier when the Tesco van can't get down our street with my delivery and we have nothing for dinner!!

OP posts:
chocolatesaltyballs22 · 14/01/2021 12:58

@SquirtleSquad eek that sounds horrendous.

Dd and I have been out all morning with her sledge. Heavy snow here.

DingDongDenny · 14/01/2021 13:35

Well I must be grumpy too then because I was annoyed at kids turning the path on a local walk into a slide, when there were lots of older people using it as well.

There are lots of other places to sledge and slide - stay off the paths and roads!

From my lunchtime walk (lots of people out sledging, all safely here) for those envious of the snow. It started snowing early this morning and hasn't stopped yet.

If it’s that bad go out before it’s light and grit the whole street, then deny all knowledge.

BonnieDundee · 14/01/2021 18:02

YANBU OP. For those who say OP is being grumpy, do you really think a street is a safe place for kids to be sledging?
