I have 5 7 inch Amazon fire tablets all fitted with large memory cards, they're the newest edition. I purchased in February for a holiday to Egypt as the Ipads were to large to comply with the flight regulations returning to the UK. I want to donate them to families in need of them for schooling but not sure of the best way to do this? They've been sitting in the hall cupboard in the cases untouched since our return, plus my kids all had IPad upgrade for Xmas. We have the old Ipads as back up devices, laptops and a 2 galaxy tablets with keyboards so we won't make use of them. I am worried if I put them free on Facebook somebody will try and take all 5 to sell on at a profit, so how would you go about donating them? Food bank, school so other way? Thank you

Local school, they will know who is in need.

I am trying to do something nice and teach my children some values along the way, this is no way a boasting thread so please no harsh comments.

Can Amazon fire tablets have Chrome or Microsoft?

Juk3 · 06/01/2021 07:54

Good question @MrsMiaWallis I have no idea. They are android devices/tablets not the kindle edition. I know they run Netflix, Minecraft, TikTok etc so I would assume you just download the apps from the play store.

I'd ring a school in a really deprived area to see if they could use them or suggest somewhere else.

MrsMiaWallis · 06/01/2021 07:56

I don't know anything about them, sorry just wanted to check theyd be fit for purpose.

feathermucker · 06/01/2021 07:56

If someone in my area was donating these, I'd be so grateful. My sons trying to do his work on a tiny phone screen as our ancient laptop broke recently!

Charlottejbt · 06/01/2021 07:56

From the comments on other threads, I'd suggest a women's refuge.

MrsMiaWallis · 06/01/2021 07:56

I think there might be safeguarding issues so you'd have to make sure they were completely reset.

Juk3 · 06/01/2021 07:57

They run google classrooms, seesaw but not sure about Microsoft teams that's from a quick Google just now. I will contact a couple of local schools via email to see if they can make use of them. I am not wanting them back just hoping they could make somebody else's life a little easier.

That's a great idea. I have a spare laptop. I will do that today.

I would hope no one would, its a lovely thing to do.

Mumdiva99 · 06/01/2021 08:00

I'm a school governor at a school with deprived kids- we would love you to donate them to us. I'm sure your local primaries would be equally pleased. (If not please can I have them).

Juk3 · 06/01/2021 08:00

Another good point @MrsMiaWallis I will return them all to factory settings and delete the films stored on the memory cards.

You could ask your local authority children's services.

WhatWouldYouDoWhatWouldJesusDo · 06/01/2021 08:02

Try your local hospital or woman's aid if you have no joy with schools.

I spent a week in hospital recently and thanks to the stupid pay per view TV thing a lot of elderly people were lined up in their beds with nothing to watch or do 24/7.

When I got home I cleared out my drawers (( have loads of old kindles )) downloaded the TV apps and connected to the hospital WiFi. One was for the lady in the bed opposite and I stuck a note in asking for the others to be shared as needed. Due to covid we can't go on wards obviously but can leave things at reception to be taken up.

Phone your local school. The IT dept in our local did a brilliant job resetting lots of ald laptops donated by staff and parents and getting it out to families who need them. The school will know which students need them so they will all go to those most in need.

Idontgiveagriffindamn · 06/01/2021 08:06

This is a lovely thing to do. We don’t live in a particularly deprived area but there were stressed messages from parents on group chats saying they didn’t have the tech to home school multiple children.
There must be lots of families struggling at the moment

FindHungrySamurai · 06/01/2021 08:06

When I was mistakenly delivered a food parcel in the first lockdown I rang my local primary school and they said they’d be happy to pass it on to one of their families who they knew could do with a hand.

I think your local primary will be easily able to find a family in need of them.

Juk3 · 06/01/2021 08:07

9am I will ring the primary school on the out skirts of our town as that is quite a deprived area in comparison to wear we live. I am more than happy to deliver them there and I'm certain they will be of more help to people there than my children's schools.

inquietant · 06/01/2021 08:16

I'd go via my school who have been coordinating tech distribution.

RandomMess · 06/01/2021 08:19

There is an organisation in our town that is wiping them and setting them up and then coordinating with the schools to distribute them. Hopefully there is similar where you live.

FamilyOfAliens · 06/01/2021 08:23

This is a lovely thing to do, OP.

I think you’re right that if you advertised them on Facebook you wouldn’t reach the kind of families you’d like to support.

Having said that I’m not judging anyone who wants to make extra money in these difficult times, especially if they’ve lost their job.

NowellSingWe · 06/01/2021 08:24

If your children are in a maintained school, then offer them there. Other than that, another local school.
