If you had spare 1 year oldandroid tablets where would you donate?

I have 5 7 inch Amazon fire tablets all fitted with large memory cards, they're the newest edition. I purchased in February for a holiday to Egypt as the Ipads were to large to comply with the flight regulations returning to the UK. I want to donate them to families in need of them for schooling but not sure of the best way to do this? They've been sitting in the hall cupboard in the cases untouched since our return, plus my kids all had IPad upgrade for Xmas. We have the old Ipads as back up devices, laptops and a 2 galaxy tablets with keyboards so we won't make use of them. I am worried if I put them free on Facebook somebody will try and take all 5 to sell on at a profit, so how would you go about donating them? Food bank, school so other way? Thank you

@Juk3

9am I will ring the primary school on the out skirts of our town as that is quite a deprived area in comparison to wear we live. I am more than happy to deliver them there and I'm certain they will be of more help to people there than my children's schools.
Brilliant idea. We spent a long time in a staff meeting yesterday discussing how to distribute the limited tech that we have to the families that need it most.

Many of our families can be classed as ‘having access’ but through an old battered phone with a cracked screen. Any extra tech would be much appreciated.

This is a lovely thing to do, OP. A bit cynical of me, but will the person receiving them at the school actually donate them or just sell them on eBay?

Are there safeguards against that?

Our school is loaning tech to the kids who need it, it's not a gift.

What a fantastic thing to do OP, hope your chosen school will be able to find good uses for them.

I used donated kindles for work so that we could hold virtual meetings with patients during the first wave.

Kindle doesn't have chrome but you can bypass this and force it to be installed as an app (there are plenty of you tube videos on how to do this).

My son currently does some of his school work on his kindle. It's a great little device.

Juk3 · 06/01/2021 08:54

I have rang the school that is on the outskirts of our area they are more than happy to take them off my hands! They asked what I would like to happen with them, as in donate to 5 family's for them to keep or to the school for them to lone out and collect back on reopening and then to be used within school. I said I was happy to leave it to their judgement as they know the families and the children's situation better than myself, they are going to lone them out and then use within school. I am just happy they will get used and happy my own children can learn a good lesson from this.

They aren't Kindles they are the Android tablet version, you can how even have the Kindle App installed. I asked if they would like me to leave the age appropriate books we purchased downloaded on their and they are happy for them to be left which is a plus in my eyes.

Seriously?
contrmary · 06/01/2021 08:57

I'd just dismantle them - giving them away is too risky, there's always the risk that someone will find sensitive material on them.

Juk3 · 06/01/2021 09:01

@contrmary there is nothing to be found on them, there is a few ebooks on an App and then series and films on memory cards. I have deleted the memory cards in my laptop already. They were used on two flights that's it sat in the drawer for 10 months since untouched.

Fire tablets aren't great for school work. They don't come with Google play store, it's a lot of work to essentially jailbreak them and it takes up a lot of storage. I did it to my daughter's one for Google classroom etc but it was really slow and yesterday I restored it to factory settings. I dug out our really old laptop instead for her!

inappropriateraspberry · 06/01/2021 09:03

Just read they android ones, so may be useful then. Try loading Google classroom and see.

Mm. Maybe the receptionist goes round stealing coats in normal times too. And taking wallets from school bags. Hmm
inappropriateraspberry · 06/01/2021 09:05

Do they have Google play store? They may be tablets, but run on Amazon's fire software rather than android.

Juk3 · 06/01/2021 09:14

They have Google play store installed and Amazon's version, that was one thing dh made sure of before purchasing them. They run Microsoft Teams I checked this morning when somebody mentioned they might not be very good. There are several other Microsoft things that such as power point, share point etc I have downloaded them on to all 5.

Mumdiva99 · 06/01/2021 09:44

They will be well received.

Emeraldshamrock · 06/01/2021 09:48

@feathermucker could use it.

SunshineLollipopsRainbow · 07/01/2021 17:03

@Juk3

They run google classrooms, seesaw but not sure about Microsoft teams that's from a quick Google just now. I will contact a couple of local schools via email to see if they can make use of them. I am not wanting them back just hoping they could make somebody else's life a little easier.
If you can open web browser you'll be able to use teams! What a wonderfully generous person you are! My school is in a really deprived area and we would bite your hand off for something like this so I'm sure your local school will!

Lizadork · 07/01/2021 18:20

I would double check your devices still work if they have been sitting for a while before donating, maybe ask your school if they would like them?

LawnFever · 07/01/2021 18:23

BBC local radio are coordinating with charities and schools to distribute laptops etc to people who need them, info here;

cptartapp · 07/01/2021 18:29

Radio Lancashire are currently appealing for these if you're in that area.

hopefulhalf · 07/01/2021 18:35

I have emailed a local school through this site

Juk3 · 07/01/2021 18:47

Quick update, I dropped the tablets off at a primary school yesterday morning, it wasn't my dc primary as I thought they would be needed more a bit further out. They were very greatfully recieved by the school and hopefully they will make a big difference to 5 children and their education.
