To ask if you've ever had success using a shake based diet..?

So I'm looking into different options. I know it's a typical New Years resolution to eat better, loose weight etc.. but I do really need to do it this time.
My partner and I are TTC.. I've not had any confirmed fertility issues but I am a little overweight, and I'd like to fry to do what I can to help our chances 😀

So I'm looking into either slimming world or slim fast (shake based) I've done slimming world before, liked it - but it's so easy in my opinion to stray off track.. but that could be my crappy willpower 🤣🤦‍♀️

I'm swaying more towards slim fast shake diet. I guess I'm just wondering if herbalife / juice plus / slim fast has worked for anybody before? Before I go out and blow a load of money on shakes 😅

Many years ago ... I tried slim fast.

Lost 2 stone in 3-4 months.

Regained it almost as quickly when I started eating normally again.

I don't think there is a quick fix for weight loss.

Not too helpful sorry! Confused

Hope you conceive soon. Smile

I did a shake based diet and lost weight quickly, though I ended up with gallstones and needed to have my gallbladder removed. My parents have been doing it for the last year though at a higher level (meaning they are still having food as well and the weight hasn't gone as rapidly) and have had great success with it.

cg88 · 03/01/2021 20:44

I was using a shake based diet before I fell pregnant with dd, honestly don't do it! I had so many issues which I can't prove were related to the shakes but I have strong suspicions that they were. Also the month I stopped the shakes was the month I fell pregnant, again I have no scientific evidence this was related but I can tell you that during those first 12 weeks of my pregnancy I gained 2 stone in weight.
Shakes can cause metabolic adaptation where your body stops burning calories because you're not consuming enough and so will only burn what you consume. Which means when you stop them and eat anywhere near normally again your metabolism is still burning fewer calories but you're in a surplus and so gain more weight. Hope that makes sense!
There's no quick fix, I wish there were I'm in the same overweight boat but your best option is a calorie deficit. Good luck!

whats Herbal Life like ? Ive seen people lose quite a lot 🌺

cg88 · 03/01/2021 20:45

Also herbalife tastes like feet!!

PurpleDaisies · 03/01/2021 20:46

You’re more likely to have good egg quality if you’re eating proper healthy meals than doing a shake based diet. I’d really question if that’s the right option for someone trying to improve their chances of conceiving.

SimplyRadishing · 03/01/2021 20:47

Don't do shakes.

Lost 4 stone in 5 months on Cambridge diet it was all back and then some in 2 years.
Lost another 5 stone with cambridge diet in 6 months and regained and then some within 2 years.

Attempting to lose 5.5 stone this year... (not with cambridge diet)

myusernamewastakenbyme · 03/01/2021 20:48

Herbalife and Juice Plus are mlm's....just money making pyramid scams...all shake diets are a load of shit...there is no quick fix or magic pill...or dodgy shake....it simply is eat less and move more.

Hortuslover · 03/01/2021 20:48

I’ve been doing juice plus since June
Now and so far I’ve lost 1st 11lb but parts of that I’ve been on and off it. First two weeks are a detox which I lost 8lb in my first week and 3lb in my second. I love it, changed the way I think about food and don’t feel restricted as I enjoy the foods. The shakes work well for me with no issues.

TheQuaffle · 03/01/2021 20:49

I tried them all. You end up regaining all the weight once the “diet” is over. You can’t stay on any of them forever and most of them are geared towards just limiting your calories very low without thinking about nutrition. Unfortunately, the best way is the hard way which is healthy diet and regular exercise. I lost 2stone on Joe Wicks 90 Day Plan. It WORKS!

QuestionableDanceMoves · 03/01/2021 20:49

Dont do any of them!!

They will just lead to you regaining the weight plus some when you finish them.
Plenty of protein, veg, good fats and some carbs plus strength training 3-5 times a week is the safest and most effective way to lose weight
Go on a tdee calculator and find your caloric usage per day, deduct 500 calories from that and that’s how much you eat- that should result in a loss of 1lb a week which is healthy and sustainable

Mojitomogul · 03/01/2021 20:49

Slimfast always seems full of sugar and sweeteners. I've used juice plus but they did not fill me up very well.
I now use the nutribuddy shakes for breakfast- they taste amazing, try the crunchy chocolate breakfast shake- it contains gluten free oats, chia seeds, coconut flakes and seeds - mix with any water or milk (i use cashew milk) I drink it at 7am and have my lunch around 1.15pm, sometimes I have a banana at 11ish, but it keeps me full until lunch. I'm not using it specifically for weightloss, but they also do a lunch shake, which i havent tried. It just tastes really nice so I don't ever feel bored with it!

CMOTDibbler · 03/01/2021 20:50

DH is doing 2 shakes and a sensible dinner (low carb, lots of veg) for the last 4 months, plus a day off at the weekend. Its really working for him, and it is def working in reducing his appetite, plus it is very easy to stick to even when work is manic as theres nothing to think about until the evening - and no scope for portion slippage or snacking either

Hortuslover · 03/01/2021 20:51

Also, I no longer purchase my juices through mlm’s, I get them off eBay which is far cheaper. I paid £74 a month for 4 months which gave me access to recipes etc and also the boosters and vitamins 🙄 but I don’t bother with those anymore. To save you a lot of money, I can send you the detox plan and the plan when on the shakes after the first two weeks.

I tried a couple of weeks on slim fast in the summer. I had horrendous migraines, was absolutely starving and my mood was so low. After all that I lost a grand total of.... 0 pounds!

FishInCarparks · 03/01/2021 20:52

I’m really interested in what responses you are going to get. My husband and my dad both did the Cambridge diet (not together!) and both lost loads of weight and then put at all and a bit extra back on.

From about October to Christmas I was having a shake for breakfast, another for lunch and a healthy dinner. I was loosing about 1lb a week which I was happy with as if I loose it too fast I put it all back on.

Just weighed myself this morning and I’ve only put on 3lb over 3 week of Christmas (which I’m ok with) waiting for more shakes to be delivered so I can get back on it this week.

I usually buy from exante. They aren’t great but they do the job and the bars are really filling

GintyMcGinty · 03/01/2021 20:52

4 stone since March using Counterweight

printedlace · 03/01/2021 20:52

Thanks all! SIL is a distributor for juice plus.. bee n tempted at times but I think sometimes the things they advertise / the 'before and after' pictures are very fabricated.. I haven't used it to be fair so I don't know!!! 🥴😅

Has anybody here had success with Slimming world? Xx

Havana7 · 03/01/2021 20:52

I lost 2 stone in the first lockdown first using Herbalife but it’s expensive so moved on to exante. I’ve kept it off up to now and starting again tomorrow to lose another stone for spring

justhereforthecraic · 03/01/2021 20:52

I think you should forget about looking for an easy fix as that what these shake diets do. They are great in theory but it doesnt teach you proper nutrition. I've battled with my weight and tried slimming world sooo many times I've lost track 🤦‍♀️

About 2 years ago I found a guy on Instagram who really opened up my eyes to losing weight. It's not about a quick fix , its more trying to build something long term! I stick to calorie counting, filling my body with food that will fill me up instead of having empty calories....and yes it can be slow, but I know it's more long term.

We are waiting to start IVF and calorie counting and exercise as really helped me lose the weight I needed. Plus you dont have to cut out or restrict any foods that you think are "unhealthy". I still have take aways and don't have the added guilt that I've gone off track!

Hope it all works out for you :)

Mojitomogul · 03/01/2021 20:53

When I say am not using it for weightloss - i have actually lost almost a stone since August so this could have contributed to it, as i suppose i no longer have my usual cereal or bread in the morning. I was diagnosed as coeliac so needed something quick and gluten free to have in the mornings. I do follow quite a healthy diet for the rest of my meals though- salmon rice and veg for dinner and say tuna pasta for lunch.

Hazelnutlatteplease · 03/01/2021 20:54

I did a month and half slimfast. Kickstarted the diet. Lost the rest via calorie counting with mfp. About 6 stone in total 1-2 stone of that was slimfast. Kept it off for 4 years. I'm up a bit (1.5 stone) now thanks to lockdown, but that's coming off again now (slimfast).

Suffered no ill effects on it. Or after.

DramaAlpaca · 03/01/2021 20:54

Slimfast is full of sugar so can't be good for you.

A friend lost 6 stone with one of those shakes programmes you have to get via a chemist, I can't remember the name. Unfortunately within a year she'd put it all back on, plus quite a bit more.
