What about nurseries?

So all primary schools are now closing in London. What about nurseries? We are getting at least one case per fortnight in my child’s class, sometimes more.

I think it is weird that nurseries haven’t even been mentioned.

NeverEnoughTea · 01/01/2021 20:03

Last I heard they just said all nurseries etc could remain open. That was the one and only mention in the document they published: assets.publishing.service.gov.uk/government/uploads/system/uploads/attachment_data/file/949187/Contingency_framework___implementation_guidance.pdf

I know I want to keep ds off but dh is refusing Sad

TillysMum02 · 01/01/2021 20:05

they will probably close as well. maybe further announcement to come?

CoveHid · 01/01/2021 20:06

I think there might be another u turn and nurseries will close too.

Nightmanagerfan · 01/01/2021 20:09

Gosh it’s all so last minute. I hope nurseries stay open, but even if they don’t I expect a lot of parents will keep kids at home anyway.

Buddytheelf85 · 01/01/2021 20:11

@holidayoncorona

My DH is the same. Plus our respective employers wouldn’t be at all sympathetic if we chose to keep our DS off nursery.

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 01/01/2021 20:13

I’m a childminder and so stressed about this. I want to close to be safe but then if we have to close I don’t earn anything. Sophie’s (Georgie’s) Choice.

NeverEnoughTea · 01/01/2021 20:15

Exactly. We can’t make the decision to keep our kids off and expect our employers to be supportive. Tough from a provider’s perspective as well @GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat

A confirmed case every fortnight in the same nursery? I'm surprised public health aren't investigating that further Wink

I’d be doing it anyway. Why does he get to veto?
alltheadrenalin · 01/01/2021 20:18

My sons nursery has had two confirmed cases since March

Heyahun · 01/01/2021 20:20

I manage a private nursery - we are not closing! We’ve been told by the learning trust to open on Monday as planned

We only had one case since reopening in the summer - we have a large outdoor area and will be outside as much as possible - we have a cleaner in to work for the full shift every day! Children in smaller age group bubbles !
I really don’t think we are closing tbh

Have all my staff in tomorrow for briefing in new guidelines

I find it bizarre that nurseries/ preschools weren’t mentioned in the announcement. Our DC’s standalone preschool is staying open (apparently ones linked to schools can choose whether to stay open or close). We are a London borough with 1200 cases per 100k, primaries here are closed. We’ve decided not to send 4 year old DC back- I’m shielding as CEV so it feels too risky. I can’t see how nurseries/ preschools are safe if schools aren’t. The bubbles are huge due to different children attending on different days. I suspect even if we sent DC back it wouldn’t be long before the bubble pops and isolation is necessary.

AnnaSW1 · 01/01/2021 20:23

BBC says nurseries are staying open.

zzzebra · 01/01/2021 20:24

I hope (and need) them to remain open. I'm self employed in a male dominated industry, I cant afford to loose more clients by letting them down.

Also, the nursery we use has had 1 confirmed case since March. We're in a high infection area, so I'm amazed of the mention of a nursery having a confirmed case every 2 weeks.

NeverEnoughTea · 01/01/2021 20:29

@D4rwin Genuinely. I have no reason to make this up. We have had two cases in the same class in the three weeks before Xmas.

I work in a preschool in a high infection area and we’ve had no cases, and are looking forward to reopening next week. I thought young children didn’t transmit in thwarting that older children do, or is this no longer the case with the new variant?

Abracadabra12345 · 01/01/2021 20:30

thrawting= the way.....

c24680 · 01/01/2021 20:30

The nursery my child goes to has had 1 positive case since March and that was last week.

Personally I hope they don't close as it's impossible to work from home with a 2 year old.

Sexnotgender · 01/01/2021 20:32

They’re closed in Scotland 🙄

WhatILoved · 01/01/2021 20:32

I'm a childminder and therefore remaining open to early years (plus homeschooling my own kids Confused)

The reason why there aren't as many confirmed cases in nurseries or other settings is that very young children display very few symptoms, they will have come into contact with it in high infection areas.

This government has no respect for early years despite it being such an important part of a child's life and won't therefore find the money to fund closures. If I chose not to work I won't be paid (unless parents voluntarily contribute) and some boroughs even tried to claw back 3 yr old funding last lockdown. Despicable

Mumtoalittlegirl · 01/01/2021 20:32

I really hope they don’t close.

I think for many with young children (baby- preschool) it’s just impossible to work from home. I know I can’t with me 2 year old! Not that it’s easy with school age kids of course but it’s at least a lot more safe!

Our nursery hasn’t had any cases at all, but DD still hasn’t been seeing her grandparents as we just don’t want to take the risk.

Good

I don’t think they’ll close. Not private anyway

Jobseeker19 · 01/01/2021 20:34

The nursery that I work at is opening as usual with no change.
We have been told that if we have childcare issues we can bring our children in.
