the cake bits ok and so is the icing if its thin but the marzipan in the middle is the food of the devil

marmitecake · 25/12/2020 14:55

The problem is it's fondant icing, not proper hard Royal icing which is a must for a Christmas cake! Roll on is not nice.

june2007 · 25/12/2020 14:57

Shpuld be royal. Are you sure the prob isn,t that it,s your 4th slice? But def not ureeasoable to not like icing you sound if this is unusual it,s not. I don,t mid it but often find the cup cakes with loads of icing too sickly

EssentialHummus · 25/12/2020 15:00

I ducking love fondant icing, I have to stop myself buying it and eating it as is. YABU!

PickAChew · 25/12/2020 15:03

Yanbu. I love good almond paste but cba to make it myself because nowhere sells it. Hate fondant, though. I just decorate mine with blanched almonds before baking, like a Dundee cake.

notsodimwit · 25/12/2020 15:05

Oh yum! That looks lovely Smile I could eat that!

CounsellorTroi · 25/12/2020 15:29

I just ice/marzipan the top of mine. All over is too much.

Nottherealslimshady · 25/12/2020 16:33

The only edible part of Christmas cake is the marzipan and icing.

lyinginthegutterstaringatstars · 25/12/2020 16:40

Yanbu. Icing is terrible

HotButteredRumPaPumPum · 25/12/2020 17:33

I put the icing on just to make it keep better once I'd finished feeding it
The marzipan is the bees knees. I love it anyway but I found some brandy infused marzipan in Tesco. Its bloody gorgeous!!
How do you use royal icing on a fruit cake? Do you have to spread it on like ganache? Never worked with it before.

@june2007 I took the icing off each slice LOL. And yes I hate mountains of icing on cupcakes too

I love marzipan.

Not too fond of icing. (I'll eat it and won't complain. But not my choice.)

CollateralDamage1 · 25/12/2020 18:19

I hate marzipan

CollateralDamage1 · 25/12/2020 18:20

Yeah I also hate the turd style pile of icing on individual cupcakes. A teeny spread is all that's needed.

LadyTiredWinterBottom2 · 25/12/2020 18:34

Royal icing isn't much better though and it breaks your teeth! Hate it.

CrimsonCattery · 25/12/2020 20:38

The following types of icing are excellent: cream cheese, buttercream, ganache and naice marzipan.

These are unacceptable: royal, fondant and shit marzipan.

HotButteredRumPaPumPum · 25/12/2020 23:03

CrimsonCattery yes, although with buttercream icing, less is definitely more.
I think I'll sod the icing altogether next year and see how some naice marzipan stands up on its own as a covering.
And to those making their own, what do you soak your dried fruit in? I tried 4 different recipes this year to try them all out (just making it a fair test!) and 1 called for orange flavoured liqueur such as cointreau, grand marnier or triple sec. That was an eye opener and I'm going for that every time now. Absolutely delicious!!

I also love Christmas cake but hate icing. It gets sliced off and binned.

IracebethOfCrims · 25/12/2020 23:23

I don’t like icing, marzipan, Christmas pudding, Christmas cake or mince pies Blush

TeaAndBrie · 25/12/2020 23:24

You can get royal icing in a box, mix with water until it thickens, spread on the cake and leave to harden.

Fifthtimelucky · 26/12/2020 07:47

I agree that pre-made fondant icing and marzipan are pretty horrible. I make my own marzipan. Any excess is used to stuff dates, which are then covered in chocolate.

I've never tried making fondant icing. Must do one year. I do royal icing, which I spread quite thin.

Northernmummy80 · 26/12/2020 07:51

Eurgh I hate most icing! I know it’s not a popular opinion. Buttercream, fondant, royal icing etc.
Give me a chocolate ganache anyway over a white icing 🤣🤣

MistleTOEboughski · 26/12/2020 08:00

I like royal icing better too, it has a slight tang
that cuts through the sweetness. Christmas cake does look beautiful, nicely decorated, but I must say I love fruitcake best uniced most of the time.

MistleTOEboughski · 26/12/2020 08:03

My Granny covers her cake just in homemade marzipan it looks nice and rustic, just with a dusting of icing sugar and some old fashioned Christmas tree decorations.

Mumdiva99 · 26/12/2020 08:09

We often just marzipan a cake as none of the kids like icing. The marzipan protects the cake fine.
