Royal icing is superior. Hate the gloopy paste stuff.

PoloNeckKnickers · 26/12/2020 12:37

@MistleTOEboughski

My Granny covers her cake just in homemade marzipan it looks nice and rustic, just with a dusting of icing sugar and some old fashioned Christmas tree decorations.
That sounds lovely- marzipan is the food of the gods.
HotButteredRumPaPumPum · 26/12/2020 12:39

I think I might try one of each next week year. One with just a THICK layer of homemade marzipan, because being stingy with that is a crime, and one with marzipan and royal icing.

@LadyTiredWinterBottom2

Royal icing isn't much better though and it breaks your teeth! Hate it.
Not if you add glycerine.
HotButteredRumPaPumPum · 26/12/2020 12:43

CouncellorTroi does glycerine not pretty much turn it into fondant icing?

OP posts:
CounsellorTroi · 26/12/2020 12:48

Not if you don’t use too much, my recipe uses a teaspoon per pound of icing sugar.

LindaEllen · 26/12/2020 13:00

I think you and I could be the best of friends, as I love the icing/marzipan, but I'm not the biggest fan of fruit cake (though I do eat quite a lot of it at this time of year!)

So, I'll come over, bring some wine, and you can give me the icing hahaha.

HotButteredRumPaPumPum · 26/12/2020 13:20

Haha LindaEllen you're welcome to it. I bought 2 big packs as I didnt know how much I'd need 🤢
You're not having my marzipan though. 😂

Just get rid of the icing and eat with Stilton cheese Grin

QueenPawPaws · 26/12/2020 14:56

I love icing! When I lived at home our Christmas cake was a mess as mum would eat the fruit bit, dad the marzipan and me the icing Grin

HotButteredRumPaPumPum · 26/12/2020 16:38

schoolcook dont get me started!! I love cheddar and fruitcake. Not tried stilton!

schoolcook · 26/12/2020 18:20

@HotButteredRumPaPumPum just go for it you only live once Grin

IracebethOfCrims · 27/12/2020 15:07

@HotButteredRumPaPumPum I like gingerbread, honey roast ham, Christmas roast and Yule log. Love mulled wine/cider too 😊

speakout · 27/12/2020 15:09

We cut off icing too. The sweetness sets my teeth on edge, can't stand cupcakes for the same reason.
I would have trimmed the marzipan off as well though- gross.

MaMaLa321 · 27/12/2020 15:20

Christina Tosi, the USA chef, has the inspired idea of making cakes with no icing on the side. A much better idea

@IracebethofCrims yum, yum, yum, yum and yum Xmas Grin
Have you tried mulled ginger wine? That's lovely hot on a cold winters walk.

YANBU I can't stand the stuff!

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 30/12/2020 17:01

I think I'll sod the icing altogether next year and see how some naice marzipan stands up on its own as a covering
Isn't that a simnel cake?

I want some of @Fifthtimelucky 's chocolate covered marzipan stuffed dates - sound amazing. (and they'd be good for fibre intake)

Icing is a waste of marzipan.

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 30/12/2020 17:05

Not related to marzipan and royal icing, but I learnt how to make a really simple non-sweet chocolate ganache earlier in the year.
You just melt VERY dark chocolate in unsweetened soy or oat milk, it's amazing.
(From a vegan cookery school - it might work ordinary milk, I haven't tried)

RaininSummer · 30/12/2020 17:07

Icing is vile. I think it's only there to keep the lovely marzipan in good condition.

BringPizza · 30/12/2020 17:29

YANBU it's pointless and gross. Anything with icing like that I just peel it off and refuse to entertain it, why do I need to eat half a bag of sugar?

katy1213 · 30/12/2020 17:37

Fondant icing is disgusting; it should be royal icing and homemade marzipan.
