The film is nearly 30 years old and I’ve never noticed this before... Michael Caine’s real surname on the shop front.

Wahay! Great spot! And no I had never noticed and watched it this morning lol. Also watched it like 30 times before.

SilentlyLaughing · 24/12/2020 21:16

Omg! We watch this every year, have done for over a decade ‘there’s only one more sleep til Christmas’, and have never noticed this.

HermioneWeasley · 24/12/2020 21:17

Also one of the shops at the end when they’re walking to the Crachitts’ is called “stadler and Waldorf”

SugarMiceInTheRain · 24/12/2020 21:18

Haha! We watch it every year and have done for at least 18 years and hadn't twigged!

WeekoftheOctave · 24/12/2020 21:23

Yes, spotted Statler and Waldorf too...
Fab film, timeless classic. Used to watch it as a child with my sister, now watch it with my children.
Merry Christmas everyone!

I did notice the Micklewhite sign the other day, strangely. But I didn’t know that was his real name! What are the other names you’re referring to?

itispersonal · 24/12/2020 21:31

Good spot!

I always wish they kept the first '"the love has gone' song in with his girlfriend when they split up, it helps explains why the scene is so sad 🥲 and also why it's more poignant at the end of the film.

Chinam · 24/12/2020 21:33

This is my favorite Christmas movie. I was afraid to click on the thread in case you were about to point out a bad thing that would make it impossible for me to keep liking the movie. Grin

NellyJames · 24/12/2020 21:36

@itispersonal, me too! It was in the vhs version and then we upgraded to the dvd version about 20yrs ago and it had been taken out. No idea why!
Good spot on the sign, I’ve watched it every year for over 20yrs and never noticed that. It’s my favourite Christmas film!

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 24/12/2020 21:38

Thats funny

Just watched it and a saw the sign and noticed the name and thought how good it was that it sounded like a very old english name and how detailed the film is

Completely forgot it was his actual name

LassFromLeedsWithALustForLife · 24/12/2020 21:38

My mum noticed this first watch. We saw it in the cinema, I was seven and my sister was four. She laughed out loud at it and I asked her why. Distinctly remember because when she explained why it was funny I was seriously underwealmed by the joke!

Cocolapew · 24/12/2020 21:41

Sparticle they were the 2 old men in the box on the Muppets

Cocolapew · 24/12/2020 21:41

Daisy829 · 24/12/2020 21:43

My fave childhood film. Love gonzo & rizzo the rat.

Becles · 24/12/2020 21:58

According to the director, Disney has restored the song so it's going to be included going forward.

PhoebeSnow · 24/12/2020 21:58

One of the best versions of A Christmas Carol

TenShortStories · 24/12/2020 22:00

I like it but my kids spent literally months after we watched it having bad dreams and talking about 'that scary film', so it doesn't make the list of films to watch each Christmas!

Never noticed the sign though; good spot!

itispersonal · 24/12/2020 22:20

@Becles

According to the director, Disney has restored the song so it's going to be included going forward.
So it should. Not in the version on Disney plus which we've just watched though!
GabsAlot · 24/12/2020 22:22

yes very clever

i cant find it anywhere i thought i bought it but no

GabsAlot · 24/12/2020 22:24

i never got why they cut the song out

i mean in the very first muppet movie they threatens to kill him for his legs noone minds that

SachaStark · 24/12/2020 22:33

I’ve read before that Michael Caine considers it one of his favourite performances, which I think is lovely.

When Love is Gone was cut because producers thought it wouldn’t appeal to young children Hmm

Whenever we watch it, I always pause it at the right moment, and flip over to YouTube to watch that scene, then flip back again! Glad to hear that the archivists have finally found the original negative and can restore it for future release.

Toddlerteaplease · 24/12/2020 22:45

My favourite ever film. I spotted that a few years ago.

Toddlerteaplease · 24/12/2020 22:46

Not a fan of love is gone, but it does need to be in the film.

DrManhattan · 24/12/2020 22:52

Love this! It's the frogs idea

Hearwego · 24/12/2020 22:54

I watched this film again just the other day. I think it still stands the test of time even though its almost 30 years ago! It could have been made recently and still been the same. I also remember getting this on VHS when it first came out and have seen this countless times since.
I never noticed Caine’s real surname either on the shop front!
