To Cook Smoked Salmon?

HarrietPotterska · 23/12/2020 12:03

Argh! So we have had a side of smoked salmon delivered for tomorrow. I thought it was raw and would have baked it. Can I also bake smoked salmon? Will it be weird??

Yes you can, but reduce cooking time a lot

Suze1621 · 23/12/2020 16:05

Definitely fine to cook it - I don't like the texture either

notalwaysalondoner · 23/12/2020 16:19

Yes it’s fine, I use it all the time in pasta dishes.

LaurieSchafferIsAllBitterNow · 23/12/2020 16:20

Only issue i can see is if it is already sliced and layered as is usual for smoked salmon.

The potato/salmon dish sounds lovely, I will check back for a recipe, but might well fling something together!

I also have some actual hot smoked salmon...dh went a bit mad and bought three large bits , it's all I have been thinking about since I put it in the fridge!

Rafflesway · 23/12/2020 16:26

Can highly recommend smoked salmon quiche!

RizzleDrizzle · 23/12/2020 17:02

@HarrietPotterska

Yes, I know it doesn't need cooking. Sorry, maybe I should have been clearer - tomorrow is Wigilia, which is the Polish Christmas celebration, in which we have fish. I don't have time to get another side of salmon!

Its a centre piece and will be eaten with a variety of other things, so I need to use it, but no one will want cold smoked salmon for the main meal

Ahh sorry - from your first post where you said you’d have said it was raw I thought it needed cooking. When actually mostly it’s served without cooking

In which case as everyone has said absolutely bake it, it’s actually rather delicious!

@HarrietPotterska Wesołych Świąt!

HarrietPotterska · 23/12/2020 20:35

@TealAndTurquoise dziękuję bardzo! Nawzajem!

@HarrietPotterska I'm video calling my relatives in Poland for wigilia tomorrow. I'm making some pierogi and I'm also cooking some salmon. What other dishes are you having? I love most Polish food apart from herrings. I've really tried over the years but I just don't like them.

OoohTheStatsDontLie · 23/12/2020 21:17

You can but it will go very salty

If you want to do that I'd soak it in several changes of water straight away to try and make it less salty and gently poach it in some lemony water.

I think it would be better though to change your plans and so something buffet style, keep it as smoked salmon and do some posh sides like beetroot salad, horseradish creme fraiche, pickled radish, mustard and dill potato salad etc. I'd rather have that than flaked hot smoked salmon

OoohTheStatsDontLie · 23/12/2020 21:19

Hot smoked salmon you get from the shops has been kind of barbecued. And lightly smoked salmon for cooking is actually 'smoked flavoured' salmon. It's not quite the same as cooking cured smoked salmon which is effectively already cured.

Ok flaked through pasta or anything with eggs (eg quiche) though

Ostryga · 24/12/2020 00:00

@HarrietPotterska @TealAndTurquoise Wesołych Świąt!

We have carp tomorrow - MIL is so traditional. Wish we were having salmon!

Precipice · 24/12/2020 01:08

We are also having salmon.

It has not been smoked, but if it were, I would also cook it in some form. I remember I cooked smoked haddock once. I can't stand cold fish. In general foods that I think 'should' be hot (meat, pasta/rice/etc, eggs) being cold is unpleasant to me.

My mother calls carp a communistic fish ;) I've never had it in the bathtub either.

I dislike/won't eat most traditional wigilia food. We have some opłatek, are having mushroom soup this year, some pierogi also, makowiec. We counted over 12, as long as you count cake and biscuits and potatoes and "kapusta z grzybami" in such a way.

LEELULUMPKIN · 24/12/2020 01:18

I can't stand raw fish but love a side of baked smoked salmon.

We have it every Christmas Eve.

Go for it OP it will be delicious!

Wesołych Świąt

grassisjeweled · 24/12/2020 01:18

Can you just buy another fish?

(just kidding, sorry!!)

Littleposh · 24/12/2020 01:40

There's obviously no need to but we have it in pasta dishes sometimes and heat it through then.

Just make sure it's properly hot all the way through or you may regret it the next day

Spaghettibetty345 · 24/12/2020 02:50

I love smoked salmon. Cooked smoked salmon is however revolting 🤢

GarethSouthgatesWaistcoat · 24/12/2020 02:58

In case you're in the shops today (Xmas Eve) our Morrisons had majorly misjudged their salmon sales in these Covid times and had about a million whole sides for sale with 25% off at the time I was in the shop. Probably to be marked down further if they didn't shift them. Not sure if it's the same in all their stores!

Cleverpolly3 · 24/12/2020 03:43

My friend’s mum cooked hers in the dishwasher for years

allrecipes.co.uk/recipe/2191/salmon-in-the-dishwasher.aspx

She is an amazing cook

dontgobaconmyheart · 24/12/2020 06:03

You sound a bit tetchy OP. You can cook it if you want, obviously, google would have told you that rather than waiting for all the responses here that aren't what you wanted.

In my experience it's not that nice though, it doesn't have the same flavour or texture as baking a normal bit of salmon. It's ok and even nice in certain things (quiches, pasta, potato bake dishes, like others have suggested) but by itself not the most palatable. You will mostly taste the smoked flavour and it's often fattier. Depends on the cut and quality to an extent of course.

Hope you find a solution. Convenience shops will still be open late if you can get to one. DP works for a chain and they will be open until 10pm xmas eve so I'm sure it carries across the retailers if that's an option after work.

TealAndTurquoise · 24/12/2020 07:17

@HarrietPotterska @Precipice @Ostryga I haven't had carp in years and I only ever saw it in the bathtub when we went to Poland for Christmas when I was younger. It's only me this year so thought it'd be easier to cook a piece of salmon with some sides and some pierogi. I hope you all have a wonderful wigilia. Smacznego!

inappropriateraspberry · 24/12/2020 08:04

I think it would be really nice cooked. Wrap pieces in foil and pop in the oven. I would be worried it may get a bit dry otherwise.
Like others, I would also put in Risotto, scrambled eggs etc.

PurplePansy05 · 24/12/2020 08:07

Go for it, OP, it needs a centrepiece. Will be s bit different, I guess, but should be perfectly edible! Dill would go nice with it. Merry Christmas 🎄

HarrietPotterska · 24/12/2020 15:25

It's looking good! As are the pierogi and gołąbki!

@RosesAndHellebores

Why would you waste and bastardise smoked salmon in such a way?
I do agree with this sorry! Why buy delicious (expensive!) smoked salmon and then cook the shit out of it? If you like the flaky stuff great but you could have saved yourself a whole lot of money buying a cheaper piece! I'm sure though that you can cook it and that it will be really (really) nice, nicer than normal salmon. So you will be fine if that's what you like
