Covid is being used as an excuse

To mask Brexit, & the imminent fallouts from it? Other countries are closing their borders against us - all supposedly due to this new strain of the virus but it’s odd coincidence all this is occurring now, within sight of Brexit.

I smell bullshit. There may indeed be a new strain of the virus but all viruses mutate - we all know that. Brexit is causing deep changes which we’re just beginning to see and the new strain is forcing us into desperate lockdown measures, harsher restrictions likely for the next few months. We won’t be thinking about Brexit & the shit hitting the fan. We’re too worried about the highly transmissible new strain.

I think the Govt’s behavioural psychology dept. is due a payrise.

I think you are giving them too much credit. They wouldn’t be able to manage this.

They manage fuck all else

Notimeforaname · 21/12/2020 11:05

Grin yes. The whole world revolves around Britain.

Stroller15 · 21/12/2020 11:07

I actually agree with part of what you say OP. The new strain is being used - the strain has been found in many other countries already. I feel this is to force the deal the EU wants.

OhWhyNot · 21/12/2020 11:09

It shall be easy for the government deflect all the blame on covid that will happen after Brexit fallout

But covid has in many countries had a huge impact on their economy and no one predicted this new strain

Of course other countries are doing the right thing but its already in Europe hopefully they shall be able to keep it contained as so many have this past week gone into tighter restrictions

Leaannb · 21/12/2020 11:12

Why would they need an excuse? One of the main issues with Brexit was end of free movement. It would have happened next week

snookercue · 21/12/2020 11:14

I smell bullshit. There may indeed be a new strain of the virus but all viruses mutate - we all know that.

Well it's either bullshit or it's something we all know!

And yes viruses do mutate, yes we do know that, but this particular virus has ruled the country for months now, it absolutely is headline news when there is a development. It's odd of you to think it shouldn't be mentioned because we know it happens. It's massive news and should be treated as such.

Haffiana · 21/12/2020 11:15

Brexit is causing deep changes which we’re just beginning to see

Are you fucking for real? Is it possible to be so stupid?

SoupDragon · 21/12/2020 11:16

Would you like some tin foil for a new hat?

bellinisurge · 21/12/2020 11:20

I'm a general prepper. So I get accused of being paranoid. In my general prepper opinion, what is happening is, as it seems, a confluence of bad shit that could have been slightly less shit with good governance.
There are people who believe that Brexit would have been fine if it wasn't for Covid. And vice versa.
It's actually just a lot of shit all together. Which needs grown ups in government to handle.

DianaT1969 · 21/12/2020 11:21

Your OP doesn't make any sense. Hong Kong and India have banned movement to and from the UK. They have nothing to do with Brexit. It isn't as if Brexit was going smoothly and the UK wasn't going to feel it. There is no deal. So there was going to be a tough time ahead next week anyway. The government wasn't hiding that. Hadn't you heard?

Moondust001 · 21/12/2020 11:21

@Stroller15

I actually agree with part of what you say OP. The new strain is being used - the strain has been found in many other countries already. I feel this is to force the deal the EU wants.
FFS when will people get that the EU doesn't wildly give a shit about a deal or no deal? They are a huge economic trading block with worldwide recognition and binding agreements. The UK is a very minor irritant - this is 2020, not 1820, and the UK is not a world power and mostly insignificant.

Other countries - EU or not, had recognised, even without this variant, that they needed to control social mixing at Christmas. The UK went in the opposite direction, whilst simultaneously knowing about this variant AND seeing it spiral out of control thanks to the imperative to keep (primarily) London out of extreme measures imposed everywhere else because London is sooo special. Perhaps nobody else was watching the regional and local figures, but anyone who was was asking why London and the South East wasn't in tier 3 several weeks ago. Many areas with better figures were in the top tier.

The UK cannot blame the rest of the world for its errors. Well it can, but frankly, the rest of the world doesn't give a shit. When are some people going to learn that Great Britain isn't great any more - it's a tiny and irrelevant island trying to trade on history.

Sn0tnose · 21/12/2020 11:24

I’m a bit confused. Are you suggesting that Boris has conspired with EU leaders and has convinced them to close their borders to us (trapping thousands of EU citizens in the UK) so that he can frighten us all into blaming Covid and forget about the chaos that’s just around the corner?

Or are you saying that the EU has decided to teach the UK a lesson by shutting up shop for 48 hours and Boris has thought ‘perfect timing’ and decided to blame the whole thing on the new strain of Covid?

Either way, unless Boris has implemented North Korea style restrictions on the Internet, I’m pretty sure the French would be quite happy to let it be known that it was Brexit related rather than Covid, if that were the case.

backwardforward · 21/12/2020 11:32

You know how in encyclopedias it says that an asteroid killed the dinosaurs....well, it was actually Brexit. They've been lying to you all these years OP.

whysorude · 21/12/2020 11:35

backwardfordward
🤣🤣🤣

ClarenceBoddicker · 21/12/2020 11:38

It could help mask the Brexit impact but as stated upthread is far too clever for the government to have come with it as strategy themselves.

TonMoulin · 21/12/2020 11:38

I agree with you @Kettler.

Other countries closing their borders is. The cherry on thé top. (And yes. I very much doubt this was planned)
It’s the lockdown (tier 4 is lockdown) that is likely to be extended and Will distract everyone. Plus this means people will have to stay at home, more powers given than to the Covid rules.

Other side of the coin, the unforeseen reactions of other countries have just highlighted the type of issue with No Deal. It will make some people desperate for a deal. Other will get even more angry.
It certainly will make people focus

TonMoulin · 21/12/2020 11:42

Either way, unless Boris has implemented North Korea style restrictions on the Internet, I’m pretty sure the French would be quite happy to let it be known that it was Brexit related rather than Covid, if that were the case

I very much doubt that France would say anything at all officially IF the aim was to put. Pressure on the U.K. around brexit.

Quite the opposite actually

snookercue · 21/12/2020 11:43

It’s the lockdown (tier 4 is lockdown) that is likely to be extended and Will distract everyone.

The majority of people who have an interest in what is going on in the country will possess the ability to read and understand news about both Covid and Brexit. It's not difficult.

ForestNymph · 21/12/2020 11:44

I agree. I don't for a minute feel the virus is a conspiracy but the government are definitely using it to their advantage

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 21/12/2020 11:50

@LittleBearPad

I think you are giving them too much credit. They wouldn’t be able to manage this.

They manage fuck all else

I agree...completely
ohgetoveryourself · 21/12/2020 11:50

Cases have jumped 200% in a week bevauseall London children are being tested. Viruses always mutate so this is a veil without doubt. In my borough (one of the highest in London) 30 people have died in 16 weeks and the vast majority were over 70 and with underlying health conditions. Hospital admissions remain low. If this is the case in one of the “worst” boroughs then there is no justification for Tier 4. As for MPs leaving London before the news hit, that’s beyond words. The government needs to admit they are wrong, back down and stop gaslighting us. Check NHS figures daily, write to your MPs and ask them to demand honesty from the government.

Covid is being used as an excuse
ohgetoveryourself · 21/12/2020 11:55

While I feel terrible that 1.8 elderly people are dying per week, those figures are very low and also similar to flu deaths in other years

DGRossetti · 21/12/2020 11:59

Either way, unless Boris has implemented North Korea style restrictions on the Internet, I’m pretty sure the French would be quite happy to let it be known that it was Brexit related rather than Covid, if that were the case.

If they wrote it in French, then nobody would read it.

Some EU countries had introduced restrictions at Christmas, some had not. For example, according to yesterday's Sunday Times you can see up to 10 people inside in Denmark, but not buy alcohol after 10pm.

And if you had been looking at the tiers for the south-east you would have known that Kent has been in tier 3 since the November lockdown ended. I do wish people would stop going on about London being treated as if it were special. It wasn't that long ago that people were saying London had very few cases! Things change very quickly.
