Covid is being used as an excuse

To mask Brexit, & the imminent fallouts from it? Other countries are closing their borders against us - all supposedly due to this new strain of the virus but it’s odd coincidence all this is occurring now, within sight of Brexit.

I smell bullshit. There may indeed be a new strain of the virus but all viruses mutate - we all know that. Brexit is causing deep changes which we’re just beginning to see and the new strain is forcing us into desperate lockdown measures, harsher restrictions likely for the next few months. We won’t be thinking about Brexit & the shit hitting the fan. We’re too worried about the highly transmissible new strain.

I think the Govt’s behavioural psychology dept. is due a payrise.

Is india part of the eu? Grin

@Haffiana

How rude. It’s a topic for discussion. What are your thoughts, other than calling me stupid?

Merry Christmas to you!

Are the professors of virology lying about the dangers associated with this new strain? Plenty of them of them have been very critical of the government but are still talking about how this action to curb is absolutely necessary.

namechangefail2020 · 21/12/2020 12:21

Oh I thought these types of comments were in the Daily Mail comments section, gutted it's now moved over the MM

WhatwouldAnneFrankthinkofus · 21/12/2020 12:28

I think all these countries including India (a non European country) have put restrictions on UK because as a country we are a very entitled lot who mostly seem to want to make everything about themselves with attitudes like "i would rather live than survive " "i am having my freedom taken away" even during a pandemic, and generally a "Britain is a far superior country than others" attitude, and don't really care much about others . Thry know if there is even the slightest opportunity or loophole this nation of "me, me, me and mine" will book flights and holidays abroad to go have a jolly without thinking about others.

What do you think Namechange other than the boring sarcasm?

Loving the posters on these types of threads who take time to write & post a sarcastic response rather than contribute.

It's a valid contribution.

ProfessionalWeirdo · 21/12/2020 12:39

I don't for a minute feel the virus is a conspiracy but the government are definitely using it to their advantage.

This. It's certainly given BoJo a convenient excuse to impose extra restrictions after repeatedly promising that he wouldn't. And later, he will use it as a scapegoat for the economic disaster which Brexit will cause.

RufustheSniggeringReindeer · 21/12/2020 12:40

If sarcasm isn’t allowed on here anymore than I’m fucked

WhereYouLeftIt · 21/12/2020 12:46

"We won’t be thinking about Brexit & the shit hitting the fan. We’re too worried about the highly transmissible new strain."

I'm guessing your thoughts are along the lines of by Jo Moore's 'good day to bury bad news' ?

I'm more of a Hanlon's razor person - "Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity."

Or - our current government is incompetent. Couldn't organise a piss-up in a brewery. The Tory party elected Johnson as leader for one reason only - to push Brexit through. He was an ideological choice for them; not chosen as the best, the cleverest, the most astute, but to do one task and one task only (and that task was not to govern a country competently). And he selected his cabinet based on who would align with him on that one task. They were also not chosen as the best, the cleverest, the most astute Sad, but for being willing to push that task.

And while he was doing that (extremely incompetently - oven-ready, my arse) something unanticipated by this faction happened and their shortcomings and weaknesses and lack of political competence was thrown into sharp relief.

The government is not fucking up their handling of the pandemic in an attempt to distract us from Brexit. They're fucking it up because they are incompetent. They're fucking up Brexit too, and just about everything they touch.

So no, the pandemic is not being used as an excuse to mask Brexit and its fallouts. It will be used as an excuse for why everything they've touched has turned to shit, but that's another question entirely.

Yes.

How hard is that to get your head around? Governments lie, and the people they employ lie on their behalf. Happens all the time.

I agree with OP. The measures introduced are way out of proportion to what is actually happening and have been since the very beginning.

HighNetGirth · 21/12/2020 13:15

I agree with WhereYouLeftIt.

However, I do think the detail and emphasis of the announcements on this have been spun to make the PM look responsible and distract us from the fact that he was at PMQs as recently as last Wednesday still promising us relaxed rules for Christmas. He digs in to avoid having to concede that Keir Starmer might be right then claims the inevitable u-turn has been forced on him by sudden developments. The reality is that Bozo is poor at decision-making and loath to deliver bad news.

Kettler · 21/12/2020 13:17

@doublehalo

Agree. Whilst I don't doubt the existence of the mutation, it's the timing of the new restrictions that seems part of a devised strategy to divert attention.

@WhereYouLeftIt
It will be used as an excuse for why everything they've touched has turned to shit, but that's another question entirely.

Yes to this. Future problems we face will be shifted onto Covid as much as possible.

nosswith · 21/12/2020 13:35

Other countries may be closing their borders because they reacted in a quicker timescale than ours. As per usual, this government cannot even be on time for a press conference that they have called.

Though I think the delay to Saturday was to avoid having to face parliamentary scrutiny, or because most of their donors would have travelled on Friday evening.

Leafyhouse · 21/12/2020 13:42

I think it would be an excellent negotiating tactic for the EU - close the borders (for whatever reason) and put the squeeze on the UK. Watch us suffer, then see if Boris still pushes for a tough deal once the shelves start emptying. I'll be totally unsurprised if that second shipment of the Pfizer vaccine gets delayed or doesn't show up.

FOJN · 21/12/2020 13:53

You may have a point, covid dominating the news is no doubt very convenient for the government. However I don't think you can ignore 2000 daily hospital admissions and rapidly rising infection rates, we have about 170,000 acute hospital beds in the UK. If the scientists are correct and the mutated virus is more transmissible then, as important as Brexit is, the virus is going to be a more imminently pressing problem and therefore more newsworthy.

MarshaBradyo · 21/12/2020 13:57

No

WhereYouLeftIt · 21/12/2020 14:03

"The reality is that Bozo is poor at decision-making and loath to deliver bad news."
Oh God, isn't he just! Always over-promising and always under-delivering. Every time he says anything positive the term 'people-pleaser' and liar goes through my head. He so, so wants to be loved by everyone, he sways in the wind trying to please all and ending up pleasing none. Then when a decision has to be made he dither dither dithers and buries his head in the sand until circumstance forces his hand.

There have been many politicians (of all parties) whose politics I have despised, but I could still respect the politician themself for having principles they could argue and stuck by. I have no respect for this self-serving incompetent cockwomble. Or for those in the Tory party who voted him to leadership; who looked at his track record and thought 'That's our man!' .

Oh not this again.

How many times has it been on this site?

No love, it's not a ploy to mask Brexit.

You honestly think that all the scientists who are interviewed and other countries now seeing the mutated virus are making it all up?

Jog along.

ProfessionalWeirdo · 21/12/2020 14:08

Even more so, now that he doesn't have Demonic Cummings to make his decisions for him.

The reality is that Bozo is poor. Full stop.
