To think dh should have let her have the chocolates

Awkward moment today as my SiL dropped some presents outside our home... but she got the numbers mixed up and left on the doorstep of elderly NDN.

I sent DH to get them but said “please knock first as otherwise it will look like we are swiping packages off her driveway.

Anyways - she’s quite elderly and fairly deaf so dh has to sort of explain it twice and he said at this point she’s holding onto the chocolates that were unwrapped on top but he’s taking the other packages. She’d got confused I think.

Anyhow’s rather than just leaving it - he had to explain four times that “no the chocolates are ours too”.

Ffs they were Dairymilk - so Aibu to say he should have just let her have them?

Yes in hindsight, in the moment he probably didn’t think!

YesMeLady · 16/12/2020 17:46

What did he do in the end. Dairy Milk are pretty vile so I doubt they are a great loss. I would have let her have them. Season of Goodwill and all that.

DontTouchTheMoustache · 16/12/2020 17:48

Buy her some chocolates and give them to her with a Christmas card?

Ffwithfu · 16/12/2020 17:59

I’m planning on giving her a little plant for Christmas anyway, so may add a box of chocolates. Just feel a bit bad as she’s quite easily confused I think.

I would be happy not to have Dairy Milk. Envy (not envy)

Ffwithfu · 16/12/2020 18:04

@Arrivederla I agree horrid stuff but still ate half the box

PrincessNutNuts · 16/12/2020 18:11

I'd give her them back with just a smile and a wave, and feel good about having made her happy.

DianaT1969 · 16/12/2020 18:16

I don't think it's a good idea to give a box of palm oil to an elderly person. She'd probably appreciate a box of shortbread or luxury biscuits.

Ffwithfu · 16/12/2020 18:18

Well she evidently wanted the palm oil laced chocs.

LOL! That is so Mumsnet.

You must be fun at parties
ibblebibbledibble · 16/12/2020 18:24

Lol 😂 at the dairy milk snobbery

Out of interest do you mean dairy milk? Or milk tray?

Diverseduvet · 16/12/2020 18:26

Did he tussle them out of her hands? Did she try and grab the coffee cream back? Give her the plant and a large box of chocolates.
But yes, I would have been too embarrassed to ask for them back and would be mortified if my partner had done that!

Ffwithfu · 16/12/2020 18:28

Oh yes I mean Milk Tray not Dairy Milk. I’m also sort of imagining an awkward door step struggle (I was indoors). She’s lovely but can quite easily imagine a misunderstanding. Dh just wouldn’t think - he doesn’t really know her - I stop and chat quite a lot.

TwoZeroTwoZero · 16/12/2020 18:28

I'd be gutted if I thought I was getting some chocolate and then it was taken away from me! I'm not a chocolate snob either and would happily eat dairy milk along with the more expensive or refined stuff.

Ffwithfu · 16/12/2020 18:29

I will say - I did eat the chocolates and they were indeed horrid - but I ate them anyway.

She’d love the chocolates! Who wants shortbread when they can have chocolate? He’s an idiot, OP. Buy her a box double the size and forget the plant.

It rather depends on the chocolate in question (and the shortbread).

WhereverIGoddamnLike · 16/12/2020 19:15

If you know she is old and get confused then why did you tell him to knock the door? If they were still sitting there then she obviously didnt know they were there. He could have just taken them without incident. If any weirdo in the neighbourhood called the police then you would be easily able to show proof that it was from a family member who got the wrong house.

God this has made me disproportionately sad. Please give her some chocs ASAP. I know diary milk is kinda shitty but I honestly find it a bit heartbreaking to think of him taking chocs from her! I know they were yours! But still.

I really hope he just wasn't thinking cos otherwise he sounds unpleasant.
