To think dh should have let her have the chocolates

Awkward moment today as my SiL dropped some presents outside our home... but she got the numbers mixed up and left on the doorstep of elderly NDN.

I sent DH to get them but said “please knock first as otherwise it will look like we are swiping packages off her driveway.

Anyways - she’s quite elderly and fairly deaf so dh has to sort of explain it twice and he said at this point she’s holding onto the chocolates that were unwrapped on top but he’s taking the other packages. She’d got confused I think.

Anyhow’s rather than just leaving it - he had to explain four times that “no the chocolates are ours too”.

Ffs they were Dairymilk - so Aibu to say he should have just let her have them?

Give her some decent chocolates.

By knocking on her door, all you've done is probably make her think you've taken something that was hers. She is probably sat at home wondering why you did that and trying to figure out what happened. Maybe thought you were bringing her a gift and then took it away or something.
I sint understand why you over complicated it by alerting her. Poor woman.
Get her some chocolates and wine!

@WhereverIGoddamnLike well because she certainly would have thought we had stole something from her if she’d seen us through her window taking a load and of presents from her front door (and do would any neighbour).

She totally understood the big bag of presents - it seems it was just the chocolates. She’s not got dementia as far as I know - just a little deaf and fairly old - we chat quite normally a fair bit.

If she likes short bread go with chocolate dipped shortbread to cover all bases.
Also thanks for reminding me to get some for my Aunt!

And the most Mumsnet comment ever goes to...

Never a good idea to give elderly a box of palm oil!! This has made my day

Perhaps she hasn't tasted Cadbury's for a while and remembers when it tasted of milk, before it was bought by Kraft/Mondelez. She'll probably spit them out, or wonder if she's got Covid because her taste buds have gone funny.
