Coke Zero while pregnant

FurloughOrNo · 16/12/2020 11:07

I am coming to the end (hopefully) of a really awful few weeks of vomiting/nausea and not being able to eat or drink (forced water down me). I’m trying to build up my food/fluid intake again and be healthy but my one vice (would actually say addiction) is Coke Zero. Pre-pregnancy I would drink a can or small bottle a day and have recently started craving it again. I’ve had 2 bottles over 3 days. I’m telling myself it’s ok but is it really ok to drink it whilst pregnant? Feel free to put me in my place if necessary, I obviously don’t want to harm the baby!

Of course it’s okay to drink it while pregnant. Same with regular Coke. Why wouldn’t it be? Confused

Thatwentbadly · 16/12/2020 11:10

I’m assuming due to the caffeine. What does the nhs website say about caffeine in pregnancy?

Butterymuffin · 16/12/2020 11:10

I don't think for a minute a can or small bottle a day is a problem. But if you're worried, try caffeine free diet coke instead. All the supermarkets do it now and I don't notice the difference.

Lowhangingfruit · 16/12/2020 11:11

If you worried about the caffeine content. Don't drink more than 2. Just do anything to get you through. I found ginger beer helpful

Tibtab · 16/12/2020 11:11

It does have caffeine in, you should be able to have 1-2 cans a day without having too much caffeine (as long as you aren’t having tea or coffee as well).
There is Caffeine-free Diet Coke available.

Turtleturtle81 · 16/12/2020 11:12

I just switched to caffeine free Diet Coke.

user1493413286 · 16/12/2020 11:12

As long as you’re keeping within the caffeine guidelines then I can’t see the problem

OverTheRainbow88 · 16/12/2020 11:15

Yes the caffeine free Coke tastes just as good!

Scolha · 16/12/2020 11:16

I wouldn’t tbh fizzy drinks are so bad for you. They reduce bone density.

Respectabitch · 16/12/2020 11:18

Of course it's OK. Why wouldn't it be? You aren't drinking that much. It's fine. You'll drive yourself crazy in pregnancy if you obsess over everything. I mean, I'd recommend you knock any binge drinking and illegal drugs on the head and not smoke if you usually do, but otherwise foetuses are really remarkably resilient in most cases.

You can switch to caffeine-free if you really want. I didn't, because it didn't taste the same to me.

Chickychoccyegg · 16/12/2020 11:20

Its absolutely fine, stay within rhe recommended caffeine intake on nhs website, and switch between coke zero and caffine free diet coke, it won't affect your baby.

Dumbie · 16/12/2020 11:20

As long as you are within the guidelines for restricted caffeine intake whilst pregnant, drink away!

MrsHugsxx · 16/12/2020 11:22

It's fine, it's not going to harm the baby. The risks of caffeine are small anyway. The only thing I cut down on in regards to caffeine was coffee. I had tea and diet coke as normal and the occasional coffee, all babies absolutely fine.

Jellybean100 · 16/12/2020 11:23

If you have no other caffeine from anywhere else then the amount of caffeine in a can of Coke would allow you to have 6 a day. I wouldn’t worry

FurloughOrNo · 16/12/2020 11:31

Thanks all! Not drinking any other caffeine so looks like I should be ok.

Since when have you not been able to drink caffeine in pregnancy? I didn't drink tea or coffee in the early weeks of being pregnant because my taste buds changed but from about 15 weeks I drank it as normal.

I don't think I drank that much cola, but must have drank some as an alternative to a glass of wine.

FGS is there anything women are still allowed to do while pregnant?

Nottherealslimshady · 16/12/2020 12:33

Get the decaf stuff. It tastes just the same. Caffeine also dehydrates you which wont be good for you.

WatermelonKisses · 16/12/2020 12:34

You can have up to 200mg of caffeine a day and a can of Coke Zero has around 45mg so you are well within your limits.

Enjoy!

1sttimemumtobe2021 · 16/12/2020 12:38

It's well within the caffeine guidelines and the NHS website would be very risk averse when giving guidelines.

I suffered from HG and drank it. It's the sugar boost that was needed. If it's what you need, it's what you need.

Apricotta · 16/12/2020 12:45

Burgers, sweets, crisps and coke got me through my almost hypermesis. You've got to do what you've got to do.

My youngest is 13 and that was the advice then. It certainly wasn't new either
Yeahnahmum · 16/12/2020 12:58

Fine for baby i guess ... (hope)
But boy would that be bad for your teeth😅

malmi · 16/12/2020 12:58

Coke might not hydrate you as much as water but it certainly doesn't dehydrate you.

DelurkingAJ · 16/12/2020 13:01

If anything now might be the moment for full Coke to help you tore over the calories you’ve lost (assuming you were a healthy weight before). It was recommended by the GP for me when I’d had hideous (lost a stone in a week style) food poisoning with ‘extra sugar stirred in for calories’.

Shelby30 · 16/12/2020 13:13

I didn't even know this was a thing in my first pregnancy a few years ago. You should be fine with what your consuming. I was more aware in my recent pregnancy but if I wanted a tea or a can of fizzy stuff I just had it, was never stupid amounts anyway. I probably didn't go over the limit and if I did not very often but there's enough stuff they tell you to avoid.

I know someone that was very strict on this. She'd say oh I can't have a coffee already had one today but at her baby shower she was drinking cider 🙈😂
