Posted too soon... they clamp and cut the cord after birth. They don’t knot it!

I always thought summer of 69 was about the year.

After reading this thread, I looked it up on Wikipedia. Apparently, Bryan Adams started introducing it at gigs by referring to the double entendre but the co-writer, Jim Vallance, says that he was thinking of the amazing summer of 1969 when he was 17.

Oreservoir · 05/12/2020 22:56

I knew about rice because we drove past rice fields in Italy.

Nanny0gg · 05/12/2020 22:56

Just curious,

How does #Knights in white satin, never reaching the end...
make any sense?

@user686833

I only found out a couple of years ago that you wish a merry christmas to you and your kin, and not your King.
I only found this out a couple of years ago too and I'd been wishing a merry Christmas to people's Kings all my life

@YellowEllis

Not mine, but this thread has reminded me and it's made me laugh all over again. I was meeting a friend for coffee once and she rang me to say she was running late as couldn't park, I said there had been plenty of spaces in the retail park car park and she said she couldn't park there as she would only be 45 mins as had to do school run. I questioned what she meant and she genuinely thought the "no return within 2 hours" parking sign meant she couldn't return to her car, not that she couldn't leave and come back and park there again within 2 hours. It was so bloody fun to see her realise it. Apparently she used to set a timer on her phone when shopping to make sure she didn't leave the car park too soon and get fined Grin
This is amazing

@m0therofdragons

I refurbished a house - including plastering and replacing electrics at 18. I’ve fitted and tiled all 4 bathrooms in this house including the slate floors, fitted the wooden flooring throughout the downstairs myself. I learned from my dad and DD is learning from me. I don’t understand why anyone wouldn’t give their kids these skills.

Good for you. I earn enough to pay someone with the relevant experience and skills so my house looks good rather than a diy bodge job because I know I’m not a natural at diy. Doing most things well takes practice. I’m always nervous I’ll drill through a pipe like my dad did one Sunday. He taught me the art of recognising my limitations.

I always assumed Richard E Grant and Hugh Grant were brothers. Turns out they’re not and I was the only person who thought this.

No you weren't Smile

To confuse the horse pony mule thing, mules are a male donkey and female horse, hinnys are a male horse female donkey.
I thought the karma chameleon song said our hopes and dreams, only when I saw it at a karaoke it discovered it was red gold and green Blush

When I was mid-teens (living in England I must add) I asked my mum what time it was in Wales while watching the football at night. The lights lit up the pitch and looked like day and it was live so I assumed (wrongly) Wales are in a different time zone

Bythehairywartsonmywitchychin · 05/12/2020 23:01

@alexdgr8 you’re not that wrong. There is an old saying ‘From Hull, from Hell, from Halifax, ’tis this, From all these three, Good Lord, deliver us” criminals were decapicated by the halifax gibett (guillotine) the last being the late 1650’s.

@Feminist10101

Blimey, way to ruin the spirit of the thread!

Let’s celebrate stupidity/lack of basic awareness/learned helplessness?

I think g to be post is a lighthearted one for people to 'fess up what they can't it don't know that most people can/ so know.
Making people feel they have to defend themselves rather fucks with the tone of the conversation.

@DobbyTheHouseElk

Then again, it took me a good long while to discover that summer of 69 wasn't about the year...

Ok....I did not know that.

So belly buttons. What are they then if they aren’t the knot? I’m so confused.

The cord is just clipped and what looks like a knot magically appears when the stump of cord falls off! I was fascinated watching my daughter’s, which spent a couple of days looking like the Eye of Sauron.

I am so glad it wasn’t just me.

ThatWasThat · 05/12/2020 23:07

It's good to always be open to the idea that we might be wrong about a whole number of things we've always believed. Hopefully these are things that are not crucial to our survival or the wellbeing of our families or we would have cottoned on earlier.

It's not a good thing to celebrate ignorance or incompetence.

I can't think of any recent amusing stories about my ignorance, but there has been much that I'm glad people have enlightened me about, and I am grateful that FB or similar wasn't around when I was a young one so that there's no written record of some of my many many foolishnesses.

WattleOn · 05/12/2020 23:10

@1Morewineplease

I always believed that geese flew away in the autumn to seek warmer climates. Turns out they arrive in autumn to escape colder climates.
Really? I had no idea!

Oh bore off. This is a good thread. Same goes to anyone shaming other people for things they say they can't do.

From reading this I’ve just found out it’s not Knights in White Satin, The Summer of 69 wasn’t about the year & kidneys get left in. I’m about to google the location of New Zealand in relation to Australia. Thought it was west.

AriesTheRam · 05/12/2020 23:14

It only clicked a few years ago that binmen work Monday to Friday I thought they had the cushiest job ever working one day a week Blush

The Netherlands has twelve provinces: Noord-Holland, Zuid-Holland, Zeeland, Noord-Brabant, Utrecht, Flevoland, Friesland, Groningen, Drenthe, Overijssel, Gelderland and Limburg.
Reading this I noticed a place called Zeeland. Wondering if New Zealand was named after this place. Different spelling I know but. . .
DixieLandReject · 05/12/2020 23:20

@literategiraffe

I thought New Zealand was to the west of Australia until 2 years ago Blush What's worse is that I didn't realise that until I was on the plane flying to New Zealand from Singapore! The map on the little TV in the headrest put me right
Is it not? Shock
