To think self-cleaning ovens are too good to be true?

Just that. I'm looking for a new oven… is it worth going for the pyrolitic type? The only advice I've had on this is from my cousin, who said she used hers once and never again as it stank out the house so badly.

So she's never using her oven again?

You really aren't being unreasonable, but your cousin might be BU.
I have always had a self cleaning oven and wouldn't want to have any other kind...It is almost like magic how it turns my greasy, grimey oven to spotless in about 2 hours! No more scrubbing and using caustic chemicals to clean the oven spills. I don't use that feature very often, but it sure is worth every penny when I do. It does smell a bit, but just think about having to use those stinky chemicals whilst having your head stuck in the oven to get that spot way in the backGrin

I think they’re amazing and would recommend. Your cousin sounds a bit silly

Thedogscollar · 02/12/2020 02:10

Would definitely recommend. Two hours and they are like brand spanking newGrin
No more scrubbing.

MooseBeTimeForSummer · 02/12/2020 02:16

Only time we tried it, it fried the circuits and the door wouldn’t open.

grassisjeweled · 02/12/2020 02:18

We have one, Samsung.
Self. Cleaning. Amazeballs

LoveFall · 02/12/2020 02:19

I would never go back to a non-self cleaning oven. Yes, the oven gets very hot and might smoke a bit on self-clean, but I pick a day when I can open windows, and I use the exhaust fan.

Just don't leave the racks in as they get all dull and oxidized.

My oven also has a clean cycle that just uses water (it turns into steam) you pour in a well in the bottom. It softens all the burnt on stuff so it wipes away.

MrsTerryPratchett · 02/12/2020 02:20

Love ours. It does stink the house out but so does oven cleaner.

everythingbackbutyou · 02/12/2020 02:21

@MooseBeTimeForSummer, this happened to me with two different ovens. Can't afford to use self cleaning again! Yes, they do a great cleaning job but I am not going to risk it again.

Slightlyunhinged · 02/12/2020 02:22

I have one too - game changer! I put the extractor fan on whilst its cleaning and that stops any smell spreading to the rest of the house. My mum used to call it a paralytic oven!

sunshineandlollypops · 02/12/2020 02:45

I have a Miele one. Fantastic. It does a brilliant job.

Topseyt · 02/12/2020 02:50

The next time I need a new oven it will be the pyrolytic type. Probably.

violetbunny · 02/12/2020 06:17

I like the sound of them, but freak out a bit at the thought of how hot they get to burn everything off so it's clean. Not sure why!

Bubblesgun · 02/12/2020 06:23

It is a godsend. Must buy.

satnighttakeaway · 02/12/2020 06:29

Does your cousin live in a house without windows? Mine does smell a bit sometimes but like any smell when you open the window it goes away

ZaraW · 02/12/2020 06:31

I agree with your cousin. I used the self clean and never again.

ThatsNotYourPassword · 02/12/2020 06:33

@sunshineandlollypops

I have a Miele one too - but anytime I use it, it sets off the smoke alarm. Any advice? I’d love to use the feature and clean the oven.

Thanks
Sorry for hijack

Twobrews · 02/12/2020 06:40

You do need to ventilate the house as it smells strong, I love ours though.

@ThatsNotYourPassword are they wired in? I switch mine off. Otherwise take the batteries out?

Octopuscrazy · 02/12/2020 06:43

Love mine. Never going back to the other type. I can put up with the smell every few months. Saves so much time and hassle and it comes out so clean.

GeidiPrimes · 02/12/2020 06:45

Self cleaning ovens really do live up to the hype! (can only speak for Neff tho)

JacobReesMogadishu · 02/12/2020 06:46

I have a Jneff one and don’t use the function as it seems a faff. Don’t you have to unscrew all the shelves out?

GCAcademic · 02/12/2020 06:47

My friend's oven door shattered when she put it on the self cleaning mode. There were shards of glass all over the kitchen. It was really lucky that no-one was in the kitchen at the time.

Inertia · 02/12/2020 06:51

We’re in a similar boat - looking for a pyrolytic double oven, but have read mixed reviews (Neff with hard-to-clean doors, and Smeg with exploding doors!)

marthastew · 02/12/2020 06:52

I have one but don't use the self cleaning feature as I have those liners on the bottom that you can just wipe off.

Twobrews · 02/12/2020 06:53

@JacobReesMogadishu
We have a Neff, there's no unscrewing. The racks slide out then the other bits just pop off.
