To think self-cleaning ovens are too good to be true?

Just that. I'm looking for a new oven… is it worth going for the pyrolitic type? The only advice I've had on this is from my cousin, who said she used hers once and never again as it stank out the house so badly.

I had one until recently. You can’t leave the shelves and trays in and they are the worst part. Barely saved me any work at all.

SilverIvyRing · 02/12/2020 06:55

Ours melted the edge of our coated cupboard doors . On both sides

We have a Neff, there's no unscrewing. The racks slide out then the other bits just pop off.[/quote]
Thanks, I’ll have to give it a go.

Ours are great - AEG and they weren't as expensive as I'd feared. It can pay for itself as many people pay £50 once or twice a year to have their oven professionally cleaned, so if you never do that, after 5-10 years, you've effectively had a free oven.

We have 2 x single built in ovens with grills and they cost about £450 each. They're also coated with something that makes them wipe clean more easily and the oven door glass comes out and goes in the dishwasher.

I put these in the dishwasher too.

My oven is a Neff and the pyrolytic function is absolutely brilliant. The racks are easy to take out - if they are very dirty I use Oven Mate rack cleaning kit. If you don't let the oven get too dirty then it hardly smells at all. I would never go back to non pyrolytic.

HappydaysArehere · 02/12/2020 09:03

I have aNeff and it is the best oven I have ever had. Love the cleaning operation. Just make sure there isn’t lose fat inside or rungs. The universal tray stays inside. All comes out brilliantly with no nasty chemicals to drip onto food as it cooks.

For those who don't have self cleaning ovens, home bargains do an oven cleaning kit for a few pounds.
You pour the liquid into the large bag with the racks and leave them to soak overnight and rub some of the liquid into oven . Wipes clean after a few hours.
Works just as well as the Mr muscle oven cleaner which is alot mor pricey

sunshineandlollypops · 02/12/2020 09:40

@ThatsNotYourPassword, sorry no advice as mine does not set off the smoke detector which is just a metre away. Can you open your kitchen window while the cleaning process is on? Or phone Miele customer service and ask them. I have phoned a few times with queries. They have always been very helpful.
Forgot to mention the only downside of the pyrolytic oven is having to remove the side oven racks, but they just slot in so not very difficult to remove and replace.

PigletJohn · 02/12/2020 11:17

I wonder if your cousin had a powerful extracting cooker hood, and used it. Sometimes they are over the hob and not close to the oven.

Sorry - fried not friend
biddybird · 02/12/2020 12:31

@ThatsNotYourPassword have you tried putting a shower cap or plastic bag over the smoke detector with a rubber band to hold it tight? I do this when I'm charring steak and the entire kitchen fills with smoke.

Thanks for the input all! I am now leaning toward the self-cleaning type but would like to avoid the brands with exploding doors etc if possible. Shock

@MeeshW which brand is yours… so I know what to avoid!
Same question to @SilverIvyRing @GCAcademic (your friend's oven) @MooseBeTimeForSummer

Thanks. I'm leaning toward a Bosch or Zanussi…

I've never used one but I've always assumed they're like non-iron shirts - i.e. not all they're cracked up to be.

123becauseicouldntthinkofone · 02/12/2020 13:25

i have a Smeg self cleaning oven and it is a god send. You are right the first time you use it on clean mode it does smell so i just had the back door open and it quickly went. Gone are the days of rubber gloves and Mr muscle stinking the house out :)

opinionatedfreak · 02/12/2020 13:28

Miele one here.

I have a heat detector in my kitchen not a smoke alarm so have not had any issues.

Every time I clean it I gaze in wonder at the shiny inside afterwards. I put the racks and stuff in the dishwasher on an intensive cycle.

misskatamari · 02/12/2020 14:07

Oh god, you've reminded me i need to do mine. They beep at me daily telling me I need to clean them, abs I just ignore it 🙈🙈🙈

I do it so infrequently I can't really comment on whether they are actually good or not 😂

timeforawine · 02/12/2020 14:13

Bloody love mine! I close the kitchen door and open kitchen window, never 'stinks' but there is a smell and heat. Mine is Zanussi.
All that is left is ash, damp kitchen roll to wipe that up and done. So easy!
Still need to clean the doors though, mine has 3 panes of glass, 2 can be removed for easy cleaning, the 3rd is part of the door and doesn't get dirty anyway

MiddleClassProblem · 02/12/2020 14:18

We bought a brand new Smeg one in our last house. The self cleaning did bugger all after 18 months the heating setting meant you could only turn it up but it would roll back round to 0. It would go really fast and not one at a time so it was a chore to get right.

Shit oven all round. Would never get another Smeg.

LuaDipa · 02/12/2020 14:25

I had a self-cleaning Rangemaster oven and loved it. You still have to remove the shelves and trays but you can just bang those in an oven pride bag. The first time I did mine I had left it too long and it did produce a lot of smoke but if you keep on top of it and clean regularly they are amazing. I really miss mine.

WilsonMilson · 02/12/2020 14:26

Self cleaning oven? What is this witchery? Have I been living in the dark ages? How have I missed this becoming a thing?!
Admittedly I’ve not bought a new oven in the past few years and don’t really keep up to date with oven related developments, but I love the sound of this as it’s such a tedious and thankless task!

Please tell me I’m not the only one who didn’t know these even existed?

AnythingLegalConsidered · 02/12/2020 14:27

I’ve got a Neff pyrolytic which is about 3 years old. It is actual magic.

The glass door doesn’t get 100% clean round the edges so if you’re particularly houseproud you might need to have a separate go at that, but the joy I felt when I gave away my half empty can of Mr Muscle and unused Oven Pride kit to a neighbour because I’d never need them again was fabulous.
