Last Christmas, I bought this gorgeous dog bowl and paid for it to be personalised for boyfriend's dog. Boyfriend ended it before I got the chance to give it to him (and Cooper).

It's a lovely bow and wasn't cheap, so I'd like to give it to my friend who has a dog who'd really like it. Now, unsurprisingly his dog isn't called Cooper. AIBU to think I could paint over the Cooper name with his dog's name? It's going to look shit if I do it, so happy to pay someone else but where would I go to who could do it? Maybe I could buy ceramic paints from Amazon and have a look on local Facebook pages for a calligrapher? ... I don't know. What are your thoughts?

I'd probably ask my friend if they could use it, and if yes I'd just give it to them. After all the dog can't read!!

Hayeahnobut · 29/11/2020 15:54

Unless the names are very similar, it's going to look awful whoever does it.

I'd appreciate it with the original name and a message "bought this for ex's name" but love you more. I do like quirky presents though! Smile

Concestor · 29/11/2020 15:54

I don't think you can now that it's been glazed, but try asking at your local pottery cafe as they are usually very knowledgeable

Hayeahnobut · 29/11/2020 15:55

"bought this for (ex's name) but love you more"

SylvieSangFroid · 29/11/2020 15:55

Yes, I'm sure your friend could use it anyway? Or maybe you could get a pet and call it Cooper!

What is the other dog's name? Is it close to Cooper, like Scooter, or something completely different, like Bob?

FenellaMaxwell · 29/11/2020 15:55

It’ll look terrible - that’s already been glazed.

Viviennemary · 29/11/2020 15:56

I agree. Just give the bowl as it is. It would be really difficult to cover the letters and could easily end up looking a complete mess.

CatbearAmo · 29/11/2020 15:56

If the dogs name is Pooper you might get away with it

Ilovesugar · 29/11/2020 16:05

It’s already been glazed so it will look awful

EveryDayIsADuvetDay · 29/11/2020 16:08

Agree, would look a mess and Dog won't be bothered

Bakeachocolatecaketoday · 29/11/2020 16:08

You would be better trying it on ebay, on a long listing.

WitchesSpelleas · 29/11/2020 16:09

See if you can get a slightly larger, shallower bowl to sit it in, hiding the 'Cooper' (and also catching drips when doggy laps).

WitchesSpelleas · 29/11/2020 16:10

... or ask your friend to rename her doggy Grin.

olderthanyouthink · 29/11/2020 16:21

eBay/Facebook it

MrsToothyBitch · 29/11/2020 16:34

I'd give it as is. All of our pet gear has been through multiple pets, so unless your friend is especially unimaginative (Kevin, Kevin II, Kevin III etc), name on the bowl will eventually be irrelevant anyway. Wheras the thought will stay for ever.

The bowl is lovely!

MaskingForIt · 29/11/2020 16:40

eBay it. Painting over it will only ever look crap.

chavocado · 29/11/2020 16:47

If you could find someone with a pet called Copper it would be a piece of piss!

Cocomarine · 29/11/2020 16:52

Any chance of selling it to ex’s parents?!

BoudiccaD · 29/11/2020 16:54

Stick a vinyl sticker over the name.

AdaColeman · 29/11/2020 16:56

Painting the name out won't work.
Use it yourself as a plant pot, just have it positioned where the Cooper part can't be seen.

mrsbyers · 29/11/2020 16:58

There’s a Facebook site -
Cooper short on spine big on love about a rescue dog called Cooper - why not contact them and offer it as a gift , nice thing to do ?

Elieza · 29/11/2020 17:10

You can’t gift that to a pal!

Charity or sell.

It’s a nice bowl. Someone with a dog, cat or bunny called Cooper will enjoy it.

SlopesOff · 29/11/2020 17:11

Painting over a glaze won't go well, you could do it with ceramic paints but would find it difficult to paint out the name and then paint over the top.

It isn't an unusual name for a pet and would probably fetch enough on Ebay right now as a Christmas present to enable you to buy another one, either with a name or without.

That's a nice idea...unless it's the ex's page of course!
