Painting over Emma Bridgewater design

Last Christmas, I bought this gorgeous dog bowl and paid for it to be personalised for boyfriend's dog. Boyfriend ended it before I got the chance to give it to him (and Cooper).

It's a lovely bow and wasn't cheap, so I'd like to give it to my friend who has a dog who'd really like it. Now, unsurprisingly his dog isn't called Cooper. AIBU to think I could paint over the Cooper name with his dog's name? It's going to look shit if I do it, so happy to pay someone else but where would I go to who could do it? Maybe I could buy ceramic paints from Amazon and have a look on local Facebook pages for a calligrapher? ... I don't know. What are your thoughts?

I’ll have it! My dog is called Cooper (Cooper the Pooper) 😂😋😋

Seriously though-maybe eBay? Not sure you’ll be able to paint over it.

CheetasOnFajitas · 29/11/2020 17:18

Post on the dog boards here. I bet someone has a dog called Cooper and would give you a reasonable price for it.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 29/11/2020 17:20

Personally I'd either just use it for something or give it to your friends dig for Christmas, full of treats. Dog won't care about the name & you can tell your friend about the name thing.

Ebay is an option, but I can't be bothered with it myself. It's too niche for a charity shop.

Do you know anyone who has a dog, that is about to have some puppies, if so, they might like this as a gift and name one puppy Cooper.

Genevieva · 29/11/2020 17:27

Honestly, I would give it to Cooper anyway. At least you can part company knowing he will have to look back and think you were a nice person.

CunnyLingus · 29/11/2020 17:29

But, it has already been slipped, decorated and fired.

Whatever you do will just wash off or be slobbered off, serving to blemish the original. Sell it or give it away to someone who still practices the art of barrel-making so they use it for their breakfast co-co pops. Buy a new one that is fitting for a new start.

Clymene · 29/11/2020 17:39

eBay it. I know other dogs called Cooper.

Callipygion · 29/11/2020 17:55

I wouldn’t try and paint over it. It would probably end up looking like a dog’s dinner.

InescapableDeath · 29/11/2020 18:00

Bridgewater always sells on eBay eventually!

Lexjo · 29/11/2020 18:01

Thanks for the advice all, his dog is called Cloud... so could be worse - at least some of the letters match....

I think you're all right though, attempting to paint over it can only end in disaster! I'll see if I can sell it and buy Cloud a gift with the money. Thanks everyone

You can reglaze and fire pottery but I expect it would be the same price to buy a new bowl Grin

Wack it on eBay or something similar ☺️

AcrossthePond55 · 29/11/2020 18:22

I think it would be tacky to give someone a gift that you've personalized for someone else. No amount of trying to disguise it is going to really work.

I'd ask someone if they wanted it despite the personalization. Or I'd find some other use for it myself. Turn it backward so the name can't be seen and use it as an under-pot water catcher for a pot plant or if you have a counter with a corner put it (name backwards) on the counter for sponges or for peelings/shells to go to compost or the garbage.

Di11y · 29/11/2020 18:23

Could they not paint over it white and write cloud on the other side?

LadyFelsham · 29/11/2020 20:04

Is Cloud willing to change his name by deed poll?

If Cloud is unreasonable about this, could you at least ask him to double barrel to Cloud Cooper.

If Cloud rejects both these options then you have your answer. Keep the bowl.

Yes but you need to know the temperature that the clay and glaze can withstand so in this case, it is unlikely to be doable unless the makers for Emma Bridgewater provide this info.
longtompot · 30/11/2020 10:58

Seems it might be doable expandusceramics.com/qa/can-i-repaint-glazed-ceramics.html but it might be best to sell and get a new one.
Another thought. You could cover it with a dishwasher safe sticker www.stickermule.com/uk/support/are-your-stickers-dishwasher-safe
