Ray Clemence, former football player and manager, died last week aged 72. I considered it a premature death.

Pensionable age is older perhaps.

User5556774 · 21/11/2020 22:25

Not old no but certainly not young either. I think maybe 65/70 plus as old.

Floralnomad · 21/11/2020 22:27

I think 70+ is getting old and 80+ is old .

sbhydrogen · 21/11/2020 22:31

My dad always complains that he's "getting old" but I'm like, "mate, you're only sixty six. You're not old".

80+ is old.

SuitedandBooted · 21/11/2020 22:37

Not old, but not young. But everyone is different

I'm 56. On Monday I will be getting up at 6am as usual, taking the dog for a brisk 40 min run (cross-country, up hills). Then I'll take DH to work, 2 DC's to school, drop dog off, and embark on my 20 mile commute to my FT job. Work until 5pm, and do it all again in reverse . I also often do overtime on Saturdays. I do all the shopping, gardening and DIY. Currently laying and engineered oak floor.

Many of my 20 to 30 something colleagues often complain about how tired they are, and work is sooooo hard.

I feel great! Smile

I’m 70 but don’t consider myself to be old. I don’t even think about it, if I want to do something, I do.

Trauchled · 21/11/2020 22:53

Definitely not old.
My great aunt went into sheltered housing a number of years ago and remarked that "the flats are lovely, but it's full of old people".She was about 85. years old at the time.

Bluntness100 · 21/11/2020 22:57

No

I’m fifty one, I go to the gym most days, have very long curly hair, I work, non Covid times I go to gigs, Socialise a lot, have lots of friends. and have fun. I don’t feel old.

I know I am “old” in comparison to a twenty year old. But young in comparison to an eighty year old. I don’t feel old old.

HerRoyalNotness · 21/11/2020 23:23

As I’m only 3 yrs off, I’d say no. For me 75+ is old. But when I was in my teens/early 20s Of course 50 seemed old

BackforGood · 21/11/2020 23:24

Like most things - depends on the context.

There's a thread in Active convs at the moment "Is 25 too old for living in University Halls" - I've not read it yet, but my instinct is to say yes.
There was a thread a couple of weeks ago talking about the OP's friend who had gone abroad for IVF treatment, and was now expecting twins. The friend was aged 50. I agreed with many posters there, that that was old.

OTOH, would you say "that old lady over there" when talking about most 50 yr olds ? - No, I don't think you would. Generally, a 50 yr old in the Western world would be considered middle aged.

The regular threads about old people are usually debating if you are old in your 70s, not a mere spring chicken of 50.

Mintjulia · 21/11/2020 23:30

I'm 57, single mum with a 12yo DS, normally work full time, run 5k and 10k most weeks, practice martial arts.

It has never occurred to me that I'm old. I don't have time to worry about it. Smile

RosesAndHellebores · 21/11/2020 23:33

I'm 60. Work full-time, all the time. Have DC in their 20s.

Today I wore skinnies and knee high boots and still have blondish (ahem hair).

At 60 my grandma had a shampoo and set twice a week, wore a long line bra, a corset and suspenders and had never owned a pair of trousers. At 80+ my mother wears leather trousers, a silk shirt, patent heels and has gel nails and highlights and is still a size 8Envy

Age is clearly a state of mind.

tobee · 21/11/2020 23:50

@Josette77 I was joking. Sort of....

Pipandmum · 21/11/2020 23:52

I'm 58 with two kids still in school. I don't feel old, though I guess I'm middle aged. I think elderly is 75+.

LemonBar · 21/11/2020 23:55

50 is definitely old.

ArranBound · 22/11/2020 00:01

Why is old thought of as bad? It shouldn't be. I'd certainly rather be the age I am now than be a teenager or 20 something now.

Brissiegirl · 22/11/2020 00:03

No, I'm 56 and don't feel old at all. My mother @ 86 talks about minding the old ladies in her club

june2007 · 22/11/2020 00:03

Generally no. But I rtemember a women was celebrating a birthday. I was expecting her to say her 60th she said her 50th. I couldn,t believe it. She seemed "old". But it,s not due to her age it,s due to her state of health.

fantasmasgoria1 · 22/11/2020 00:11

No not at all. Things are different these days and a 50 year old now is like someone in their later 30s a few decades ago.

whatisgoingtohappen · 22/11/2020 00:17

No, if 50 plus is old what is 60/70/80 plus?

Marketing groups 50 to 80 year olds together but that is strange.

50 plus is middle aged.

Until I am not sure when.

I am 51 with a 56/57 year old colleague who is always telling everyone how old she is and it annoys me.

I am still hoping to meet someone nice after my horrible divorce and am not ready to write myself off Sad.

OneWildNightWithJBJ · 22/11/2020 00:21

No, definitely not. 85ish is old.

Tanfastic · 22/11/2020 00:27

I work with elderly and consider anyone over 80 to be old.

echt · 22/11/2020 01:37

Ray Clemence, former football player and manager, died last week aged 72. I considered it a premature death

It is. When was being checked out for HRT and my family history was needed, I was assured that though my dad, born just after the IWW, and to a low-income working class family and a lifetime in a dangerous occupation, his death at 72 was premature.

echt · 22/11/2020 01:43

The thing that pisses me off is on so many questionnaires, where after 65 there is no category for age.

THE ABYSS.

And stupid when you consider that in Au the problem with retired elders is they don't spend as they could. The dozy buggers should be courting them.

And while I'm here, I detest the widowed/divorced box.

Fuck. Off. They are not the same.

And again deny the wankers who devise this valuable information.

vodkaredbullgirl · 22/11/2020 01:47

What i hate about being 50+, is having to scroll for ages to get to when I was born.
