AIBU to hope someone might recognise this tape cassette from the 80s??!!

Ok so when I was about 5 or 6 I used to listen to two cassette tapes my parents let me ‘have’. I played them over and over and knew all the words off by heart as I played with my little ponies etc.

I was born in 83 so mid to late 80s?

I have such fond memories of this time and I would LOVE to listen to it again - I’d settle just for the playlist!

It was a set of two cassettes, each in their own case and the cases both had the same front cover but one said tape one and the other tape 2. They have a close up of a clown in white paint and a red sponge nose - not a creepy clown. All you could see was his face.

Some of the songs were:

Bohemian Rhapsody
We will Rock You
Karma Cameleon
Stand and Deliver
Brown Girl in the ring
Ra Ra Rasputin

Struggling to remember any more for certain

Does anyone have a clue what I’m on about??!!

Would it be one of the early "NOW That's What I Call Music" compilations

Augustbreeze · 16/11/2020 23:35

Couldn't be a NOW because those songs span about a decade....

kazza446 · 16/11/2020 23:37

Top of the pops?

SingleHandSue · 16/11/2020 23:37

Ooh I think I may have had this!!

I don’t remember the clown but the songs on it I do recognise!

I think it was something like ‘chart songs for kids’ or something else as cheesy.

ComtesseDeSpair · 16/11/2020 23:40

Were they the actual songs or a compulsion of covers? I had a cassette by the Mike Sammes Singers doing a load of covers of 70s and 80s pop songs. I vaguely remember the sleeve artwork was a bit circus-y.

ComtesseDeSpair · 16/11/2020 23:40

*compilation of covers, not compulsion

anappleadaykeeps · 16/11/2020 23:43

Is this article any use?

SingleHandSue · 16/11/2020 23:45

I’m pretty sure my copy originally belonged to my cousin and I only had 1 of the tapes. I remember being annoyed that I couldn’t hear all the songs listed.

I definitely had Stand and Deliver, Brown Girl in the Ring and Karma Chameleon on mine though.

Rinoachicken · 16/11/2020 23:46

@SingleHandSue ooo I think you might be onto something there...

@anappleadaykeeps...nope not there but thanks

I’m certain they were the actual bands, not covers - you can’t fake Freddie Mercury!!

I haven’t a clue. One thing I can definitely tell you is , It had to be out after 1991 as that was the year Bohemian Rhapsody was born.
I used to love the my little ponies oh and the Care Bears. Grin

I FOUND IT!!!! THANK YOU!!!

Pop Hits For Kids Volume 2 (Ditto, 1985)

Released on the Pickwick sub-label Ditto, this was a twin cassette pack called volume 2. We do not know anything about volume 1, but this volume 2 contains three Top of the Pops tracks on cassette 1: Stand and Deliver (Volume 86), Super Womble (Volume 47) and Ghostbusters (Best of 1984). (A version of "Long Haired Lover From Liverpool" is taken from the album Pye Chartbusters Volume 7.)

We have yet to hear cassette 2, but have been supplied a track listing which includes the songs "Agadoo", "Remember You’re A Womble", "Me & You & A Dog Named Boo", "The Land Of Make-Believe" and "Happy Birthday" - all of which were covered by the Poppers at some point. It seems likely that all or some are the same versions.

AIBU to hope someone might recognise this tape cassette from the 80s??!!

Just seeing the cover again has really made my day - it’s the little things!

We had a double cassette tape with real classics on on it, in the 80s, called Open Top Cars and Girls in T Shirts.
They were white but not sure re clowns though.

SingleHandSue · 16/11/2020 23:52

Oh wow! Bringing back loads of memories.

I don’t recognise the case which makes me wonder if I ever had it, maybe I just got the loose cassette from my cousin.

I’m glad you found it but...mate...seriously...that clown you’ve just posted is the epitome of “creepy clown”. Shock

Tumbleweed101 · 16/11/2020 23:56

I don’t think I had it but feel that I recognise it!

FundamentallyFucked · 16/11/2020 23:56

Definitely not. Bohemian Rhapsody is a 1975 hit.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 16/11/2020 23:57

I never knew that,@CurrentEvents.

Infact It never even crossed my mind that it obviously would have had to have been pre recorded. BlushGrin.

Coming soon to a storm drain near you... Sad

Blueroses99 · 17/11/2020 00:04

I’m glad you found it OP Smile

disneybee · 17/11/2020 00:11

Oh wow I had that too! That's just brought back so many memories! Funny how that picture seemed like a perfectly reasonable album cover at the time, and not at all creepy 😂

Sarahandco · 17/11/2020 00:12

That is creepy! I bet you were clinging to my little ponies for dear life

Rinoachicken · 17/11/2020 00:14

I agree about the clown - WAY creepier than I remembered it being!!! - and I was sure it was a mans face and a sponge Jose - but as soon as I saw it I knew it was the right one. Isn’t it funny how our memories get muddied about some things, and yet as soon as I saw I could so clearly see the brand new carpet I had in my room that I got to pick, could hear the ‘click’ of the cassette case I would close it carefully when I’d finished, and that plasticky rattle sound as I dropped it into the tape player before pouring over the track list printed inside - really happy times.
