Uneven leg creases

Hidm20 · 13/11/2020 21:44

My 6 month old dd has an extra 'roll'/creases on her left leg. We are waiting for an appointment with the gp about it but I'm just worried sick! Has anyone ever had this and it turns out to be normal?
Her 6 week check her hips were fine and no concerns. She is sitting independently and is very active rolling all over and she constantly has her feet in her mouth when she's getting changed. I have tired to check the length of her legs and to me they look the same size. The only other thing I've noticed is when shes standing with my support she stands with her left foot almost flat and the left more on her toes but I could just be looking for problems!
I do think we will be told that she has hip dysplasia but clutching at straws that this could be normal.
Has anyone had anything like this and it be okay or experience similar.

One of mine had this around 4 or 5 months, I was so worried and upset but he was absolutely fine, just a bit uneven. Of course she should absolutely be checked by a professional, but many children have uneven creases and are fine (just as others have even creases and problems, which is why in countries with better funded systems, like most of Scandinavia, ALL children are scanned at birth, but that's a whole different issue...)

Ribeebie · 13/11/2020 22:11

Yes! My son had this. And he's absolutely fine. I noticed it when he was about 4m and took him to the GP who arranged an ultrasound which was completely normal fortunately.

The uneven leg crease is a soft sign and most of the time it's all normal, so whilst it's important to get it checked please try not to worry as most of the time everything is fine, especially of there's no other risk factors for hip dysplasia.

TheSunIsStillShining · 13/11/2020 22:30

it CAN be a sign. But it doesn't have to be. Most kids have this. Be prepared, but don't worry.

YomAsalYomBasal · 13/11/2020 22:32

Yes two of mine had this, hips checked out and xrayed but all was fine

hammeringinmyhead · 13/11/2020 22:34

Yes - DS had this plus clicking/popping at 6 months. He is absolutely fine now - he's 2 and runs like the wind!

Hidm20 · 13/11/2020 22:35

Thank you everyone thats such a relief! I have been reading on dr Google but it always comes up with the more drastic cases! I didnt even think past her 6 week check that it could be a problem so really started to worry!

Hidm20 · 13/11/2020 22:37

Hammeringinmyhead did he need any sort of treatment or did the dr just say they weren't concerned?

As others said it can be a sign but doesn't mean definitely.
My DC3 had hip dysplasia, she had no visible signs or developmental signs (walking at 10 months like siblings). Please let me reassure you that hip dysplasia isn't the end of the world, even if it feels like it if you do get a diagnosis.

Heydugeemummy · 13/11/2020 23:03

Thigh creases are generally uneven, its tye ones under baby's bum that are the ones to watch Smile check out link below for pictures!

As someone has already said, it's not the end of the world if the diagnosis is ddh. DD2 has bi-lateral hip displasia and you can only really notice when she gets tired. It doesn't stop her though Smile

@Hidm20

Hammeringinmyhead did he need any sort of treatment or did the dr just say they weren't concerned?
He was checked by a GP and they said he was just having a growth spurt - the popping was air in the joints. He had 2 creases on one leg and 3 on the other at the time.
Hidm20 · 16/11/2020 14:28

Had our appointment with the gp today who said she cannot feel any clicking or clunking of the hips but thinks one leg my be slightly shorter than the other although did say it was hard to tell with how much she was moving Sad not looking good i don't think. Have to wait now for a scan or xray to come through although been told it could be a while

Hello, Hidm20, did you have a scan done for your baby? What was the outcome like? In a similar situation and worrying myself sick! Not yet got a scan appointment😞

AhFiddledeedee · 03/12/2020 20:34

My dad had this. Was referred for an ultrasound. They did all the leg checks and bent her legs every which way, knocked me a bit sick frankly! Felt like they were going to pull her legs off. But it needed to be done.
But she was absolutely fine, not a thing wrong with her. Just an extra crease on one side and absolutely no concerns down the line Smile

AhFiddledeedee · 03/12/2020 20:35

Dd not dad, stupid autocorrect!

kavipie · 03/12/2020 21:43

AhFiddledeedee, glad to know your dd is fine.. how old was she when she was sent for scan? And did she have any symptoms? Was she fine with her milestones?

My little one is 8 months. Still not sitting independently or crawling. She will sit if I make her sit and just about rotate around on her tummy trying to reach out things. Also notice that she kinds of resists bearing weight on that limb with extra crease! Though sometimes she does bear weight equally both limbs! Just worrying myself crazy😞

Hidm20 · 03/12/2020 23:09

No not had a scan yet! Going off my head with worry. The dr told me that the leg that would be effected is the one without the roll so your maybe just looking for symptoms that aren't there!! I know the feeling I convinced myself of everh possible thing relating to hip dysplasia. Not saying I'm any better now as I do think with what the dr has said about her leg possibly being slightly shorter that the scan will shop up hip dysplasia

Yeah my little girl had uneven leg creases, her hips were fine at the six week check, I think she asked me to come back for another check. The health visitor at some point wanted me to get them looked at again as well cos of the crease, so we were referred to alder hey. Everything was perfectly normal. She still had uneven creases til she was about 3 and a half and lost the last of the baby chub.

KarlKennedysDurianFruit · 03/12/2020 23:31

DS had the same concern raised by health visitor at that age, GP did a brief examination, felt no resistance, popping or clicking etc and said more than half of the referrals for potential dysplasia from HV were false alarms, we were sent for a scan to be in the safe side and I think to put our minds at rest and everything was fine, but during those two weeks I thought I was seeing a preference for one side over the other, crawling unevenly etc (clearly wasn't). DS is now two and runs, jumps, climbs like a goat

Rhubarblin · 04/12/2020 00:08

My DD (11) had uneven leg creases, no hip dysplasia. My DD (2.5) didn't have this and has various hip issues (although not dysplasia). I hope you get the scan soon!

kavipie · 04/12/2020 09:39

It’s just too stressful to sit and think about the same thing day and night! Hope to get the scan soon so that the anxiety is taken off at least! Some reassurance reading all your posts. I hope it’s a false alarm too. Many thanks everyone...

Hidm20 · 06/12/2020 20:53

Unfortunately I think its bad news for us because the dr thinks that one leg may be slightly shorter! Ive been trying not to think or look at things while we are waiting for her xray to come around! One week tomorrow!!

OP posts:
Goldengirlllll · 06/12/2020 21:25

Ds had extra rolls and one leg around 2cm shorter than the other X-ray was totally fine. No issues now.

kavipie · 07/12/2020 00:02

How did the doctor make the diagnosis of short leg? On ultrasound scan? Are you having the X-ray on top of the scan?

Hidm20 · 07/12/2020 07:36

We had a physical examination done by the dr, she moved her legs all round and felt her hips and told us then. No with a baby of 6 months or over an ultrasound isn't always best at showing anything up because muscles and ligaments have started to form so the dr made an xray referral instead

Aweebawbee · 07/12/2020 08:20

DD had this at a similar age. She was checked and scanned and there was no underlying problem.
