Worried at self checkout

Purpledolphin223 · 12/11/2020 16:43

This afternoon I was at the self checkout in Sainsburys and finished scanning and putting away my items, at this point my bag was extremely full and I put my birthday cake (£6.50) on the scanner after the machine finished to sort my things, but at this point the cake scanned again and I thought nothing of it and collected my things and left

Now hours later I’m actually quite worried- there was a large camera infront of me and the till was left alone with the scanned cake as I obviously walked away with it.

I still have my receipt, but I’ve gone ridiculously anxious that something bad is going to happen, like someone will turn up at my house or something for this “stolen” cake

AIBU? I feel so unsettled and worried

OP posts:
Amimissingsomethinghere · 12/11/2020 16:46

So you accidentally scanned it again but you had already scanned and paid for it?

JustAPassingFashion · 12/11/2020 16:48

Op, I mean this is the nicest possible way, and it comes from a very good place, but yes - you ABU.

I say that knowing that I'd probably feel the same, yet when you look at this as an outsider you've done absolutely nothing wrong

Forget all about it and enjoy your (legitimate, paid for) cake Grin

Brighterthansunflowers · 12/11/2020 16:48

It sounds like you paid for it so there’s really no issue! And their footage (Not that I expect thru would bother checking it) will show you scanning and paying and taking one cake.

Someone will just clear off the one you scanned accidentally.

I really think you’re worrying excessively about a non-issue.

DynamoKev · 12/11/2020 16:53

Don't panic - I shoplifted a Twix from Tesco by mistake once - they haven't caught up with. me yet.

Shoxfordian · 12/11/2020 16:54

Yeah the police will definitely be onto you

throwaway10000 · 12/11/2020 16:56

Wait what? Did you pay for the cake once or twice? If twice, they owe you money and you should have sorted it out at the time.

throwaway10000 · 12/11/2020 16:58

Oh I see what has happened now. You paid for your items and were about to leave when the cake accidentally scanned in a 2nd transaction.

This happens all the time imo, as whenever I have done this staff do not bat an eyelid at cancelling the 2nd transaction. I do think you should have told someone before you left though, as that till would have been flashing red/barking error messages/unusable for next customer etc

SunshineCake · 12/11/2020 17:02

If you scanned it twice they owe you money Confused.

ShalomToYouJackie · 12/11/2020 17:06

@sunshinecake I think OP scanned her shopping including the cake and had paid for it. Then when packing in the packing area after paying, put her cake back on the side to finish packing which meant the machine scanned the cake and she walked away, leaving it looking like someone scanned a cake but didn't pay for it and walked off.

OP absolutely nothing is going to happen, the police won't turn up at your house even if you had stolen a cake from a supermarket.

LagunaBubbles · 12/11/2020 17:09

Why did you pay for a cake you scanned twice?Confused

mumto2teenagers · 12/11/2020 17:11

YABU - you paid for the cake.

I'm sure the staff will just cancel the item and not give it a second thought.

EithneBlue · 12/11/2020 17:21

I recently walked out of a shop with a whole load of shopping when my contactless declined at the self checkout and I didn't notice that it was still asking for payment.
I felt so guilty that I went back to the shop to pay up... the staff clearly thought I was an absolute lunatic! Don't worry about it!

SunshineCake · 12/11/2020 17:32

Not clear. You scanned the same cake twice, paid once. Your only error here is not telling the assistant so they can clear the mistake, check your receipt if they needed to and then you wouldn't be worrying and confusing us.

FlatulentSproutEater · 12/11/2020 17:39

What exactly are you worried about here? Confused

UnaCorda · 12/11/2020 17:51

First of all you presumably have the receipt showing you paid for your cake. Secondly, if someone was planning to shoplift a cake I hardly think they would scan it first!

Runningoutofnamestochange · 12/11/2020 17:58

If you had paid and it then scanned again then, if the next person didn’t notice it, they will have had a big shopping bill. Grin
Seriously, they would have noticed and an assistant would have cleared it. No one is going to come to your house.

RunningFromInsanity · 12/11/2020 18:06

It must be really hard to live like that...

Chocolatecakes · 12/11/2020 18:08

I work in a supermarket, they will just clear the screen ready for the next person this sort of thing happens all the time don’t worry

Sparklesocks · 12/11/2020 18:11

Do you have quite bad anxiety OP?
As others have said, you already scanned and paid for the cake so why would there be an issue?

The supermarket aren’t going to call the police and the police wouldn’t investigate a cake. They’d just delete the item a few moments after you’d left for the next person to use.

It might be worth exploring support if this event is indicative of a wider pattern.

supersop60 · 12/11/2020 18:12

OMG - you are clearly on the slippery slope to a criminal career!

dementedpixie · 12/11/2020 18:14

I would have said to an assistant before I left

FundamentallyFucked · 12/11/2020 18:16

@LagunaBubbles

Why did you pay for a cake you scanned twice?Confused

Why did you not read the OP properly Confused

BusyBB · 12/11/2020 18:23

Even if they did look at security and see you, they would look further back to when you scanned everything, and paid. They would be able to check the till records to see you paid for the cake, I think?

HAPPY BIRTHDAY!
Hope the cake is delicious!

RedWineLlps · 12/11/2020 18:49

Aw don’t worry, I used to work on a self scan till in a big supermarket. The screen the cashier sees has all the transactions on it and they would have seen the cake was paid for on your previous transaction. They would be able to void the re scanned cake and wouldn’t bat an eye lid xx

bpirockin · 12/11/2020 18:55

I wouldn't worry about it, you paid for what you left the store with. People often use the self-scan to check on prices anyway in my experience.

I recently got distracted with the excitement of seeing a member of staff at the lottery counter as I finished scanning and bagging my shopping. I bought my lottery ticket and walked out without paying for my shopping. A member of staff came out after me and invited me to return to the store to pay for my shop - I'm not sure which of us was more embarrassed, but we did laugh about it the next few times I went in.
