Worried at self checkout

This afternoon I was at the self checkout in Sainsburys and finished scanning and putting away my items, at this point my bag was extremely full and I put my birthday cake (£6.50) on the scanner after the machine finished to sort my things, but at this point the cake scanned again and I thought nothing of it and collected my things and left

Now hours later I’m actually quite worried- there was a large camera infront of me and the till was left alone with the scanned cake as I obviously walked away with it.

I still have my receipt, but I’ve gone ridiculously anxious that something bad is going to happen, like someone will turn up at my house or something for this “stolen” cake

AIBU? I feel so unsettled and worried

I hope the next person at the till noticed and didn't end up paying for a cake they didn't get.

Nothing will happen - although I know I'd feel exactly like you.

I was in morrisons before lockdown and a group of tourists went off and didn't pay for their shopping, the assistant said this happens all the time and that it wasn't even worth trying to catch up with them - so if they're not bothered about that, nothing is going to happen to you. I mean that in a nice way btw Flowers

Forget the whole thing. Nothing is going to happen to you.

I've been looking over my shoulder ever since dd, aged 4, scoffed a cherry in Tesco. Had to move house.

She's 16 now if I don't get a knock on the door in the next couple of years I think we're in the clear.

There’s zero chance the person who used the till after OP would have accidentally paid for the cake. The till would not have allowed anyone to scan new items/pay until the cake was on the scales/bagging area! It would have incessantly beeped or flashed for assistance

@EithneBlue

I recently walked out of a shop with a whole load of shopping when my contactless declined at the self checkout and I didn't notice that it was still asking for payment. I felt so guilty that I went back to the shop to pay up... the staff clearly thought I was an absolute lunatic! Don't worry about it!
I nearly did similar a few weeks ago, my card had declined (it just wanted me to put my PIN in rather than using contactless) and I hadn't noticed and started putting my card and purse away etc - but the eagle-eyed sales assistant noticed and came over to tell me it hadn't gone through.

But no OP it's fine, don't worry!

This happened to me a few days ago. I was made feel as if I’d murdered someone. I was oblivious to it as I was in a huge rush. I returned and paid cash after walking out the door. I have never taken a thing in my life and have actually been having seriously bad dreams about it since. I will never use the self scanners again!
