To think Luther is torture porn?

I know I’m late to the party here, but I’d never seen it until this week. I thought it was quite widely praised but it’s horrendous. Torture porn. I am really a bit sick.

They might as well have titled it “Never open your front door”. Everyone who does gets viciously murdered. I’ve just come downstairs again to see a courier swathing his way through an office attacking workers with a claw hammer and an acid spray. It is like a really bad video game. Everyone going down like nine pins.

DH has to watch it for a thing he’s doing but he’s either going to have to find something else that fits the criteria or go and watch it in the spare room.

I realise the first series was ten years ago but the BBC have carried in making it for a decade.

You could say the same about a lot of things though tbh, The Fall was quite nasty in places.

Not to mention all the horror films etc..

People still watch it though, and if you don't want to, then you can put something else on.

vangoghing · 20/10/2020 23:20

I don't think it can be classed as "torture porn" which is quite a specific genre; Luther has incredibly complex storylines that build to a climax - the violence shown is not gratuitous but central to the storylines!

Just put something else on or sit in another room 😂

I think Luther was really gory (and generally a bit weird) in the first seasons but it might mellow out as the series goes on. I can’t remember as it’s been a while since I watched it in full, but I did remember thinking it was more graphic than similar shows.

Yeah, you’re right of course. I don’t watch horror films, which probably partly explains my reaction.

I’m just really surprised it’s a BBC thing or even a terrestrial tv thing. It feels more HBO or similar.

I didn’t see The Fall either, but compared to something like Whitechapel, even, Luther feels relentlessly horrific.

The one episode I saw was really gory and I couldn’t bring myself to watch it again. Despite being addicted to crime series like Frost, Lewis, Foyle, Midsomer Murders and Agatha Christie. It just took it too far for me.

GroundAlmonds · 20/10/2020 23:24

TY @throwaway100000 , I’m glad I’m not the only one to think so.

@vangoghing yes I know I don’t have to watch it. Grin I managed not to watch it for nearly eleven years. I’m not really watching it now, even.

Plus Law & Order UK, which could also be very gritty. I like hard-hitting drama. But Luther was just too much for me.

GroundAlmonds · 20/10/2020 23:26

Thinking about it, I haven’t watched much BBC drama since we got Netflix. Maybe BBC drama has gone a bit weird generally?

Well that’s three of us at least. Smile

I must say I found it horrific at first, and couldn't understand the appeal. Then I reframed it as 'cartoon' - so reducing my own emotional reactions to events.

Still don't like it much ...

But that was a particular type of ... unhinged violence. I watched Gangs of London and the sheer epic scale of the violence there was gob-smackingly awe-inducing. I still think of it with fond nostalgia. Hmm

seayork2020 · 20/10/2020 23:47

I did notice Luther never went supermarket shopping, paid a bill, went to the post office, did any housework (just a joke thing I play)

But although I am not one who likes violent or sex for no reason as long as I do not have to listen to people on screen kissing then what I watched in Luther was appropriate for that show so I was fine with it, if I wanted fluffy I would have watched Jane Austen or Downton Abbey instead

percheron67 · 20/10/2020 23:50

I would forgive almost anything to watch Idris Elba!

AcornAutumn · 20/10/2020 23:52

I watched two episodes and that was enough, too much violence for me.

AcornAutumn · 20/10/2020 23:53

I was a big fan of Whitechapel btw, sad they cancelled it.

I thought the same as I love him as Luther but then I saw him on Graham Norton and was not a fan mind you he may have been drunk on that I think so may take it back if I see him again on something else.
PickAChew · 20/10/2020 23:58

🤣 At the thought of ever imagining Luther to be in the same genre as Midsomer murders. It's more like killing eve but without the humour. It's meant to be dark, not a twee whodunit.

HelloBolloxMyOldFriend · 21/10/2020 00:01

I just saw the words "Luther" (knowing Idris Elba is in it) and "porn" and I was like yaaas. Let's talk about the sexy man that is Idris Elba. Then I realised this was not that convo.

Luther is one of my fave shows. I like dark crime shows though. Wallander would likely not be suitable for you either, OP. Just a heads up there.

I prefer the Big C or something. Just get it on DVD and put it on a loop.

Yes me too. Annoying.

I’ve been looking for something similar to Whitechapel but no luck.

I could see that Luther was going to be good, it was just too violent for me. I didn’t watch the Fall because of what I heard, though I love Gillian Anderson.

SomeoneTellBorisHeHasDandruff · 21/10/2020 00:09

I started watching Luther but just couldn’t cope with the violence. One episode I’ll never forget and just couldn’t watch any more. It was a shame as I like Idris Elba and would normally be drawn to most dramas/films he is in.

SomeoneTellBorisHeHasDandruff · 21/10/2020 00:11

I agree the fall was far too violent and very difficult to watch but I did watch it and forwarded the bits which were too much! The acting was so good. I think Gillian Anderson is fantastic. I reckon they should make a follow up detective series with her character.

seayork2020 · 21/10/2020 00:18

I like Gillian Anderson but thought she was very one dimensional in The Fall it was alike a ghost was walking around there was nothing behind her character and the ending did not match the show (yes just in my opinion)
