Etsy selling real fur *MNHQ Content Warning for written imagery of extreme animal cruelty*

I searched faux fur cushions on Etsy & got a UK seller selling real rabbit fur, sourced from Hong Kong. I knew rabbit fur, imported, is ok in UK law but I didn't expect to find it on a modern, forward thinking company's website. You can't fail to know (sickening videos of it are everywhere ) that slaughter methods there involve a slow, painful death, often skinned alive. You can't email their CEO but there is an [email protected] who I emailed expressing my disappointment. I got the most patronising email back ,quoting import law & saying that because they have a diverse community & seller base there were bound to be some things I found 'disagreeable'. If you want to check it out, redbubble.com is just like Etsy but has way more choice, far nicer products & doesn't sell real fur.

That's awful. I'll send an email to Etsy and let them know I won't be buying from them if their standards are that damn low.

Lockheart · 19/10/2020 23:56

'Etsy' is not a seller. It is a huge community of sellers from all over the world.

They have lots of people selling vintage fur, as well as First Nation peoples selling traditional crafts.

Fur is allowed on Etsy for these reasons.

WhereverIGoddamnLike · 20/10/2020 00:01

Etsy isnt the seller. It's just a website for independent makers to sell their work.

Why didnt you email the person making the products?

They aeebt breaking the law. You might not like it but they arent doing anything legally wrong.

CSIblonde · 20/10/2020 00:06

@Lockheart, it's their site and it sells real fur. You are of course, entitled to your opinion but I won't use them any more. I don't view real fur products, from animals skinned alive as a 'traditional craft' I'm afraid. I wouldn't buy vintage fur either. Makes my skin crawl. I'm just letting people know there's a better, similar site that doesn't sell real fur.

OP posts:
WhereverIGoddamnLike · 20/10/2020 00:08

Do you also refuse to use ebay because some sellers may sell things you dont agree with?

Lockheart · 20/10/2020 00:08

I haven't expressed an opinion on fur. I've just pointed out why it's allowed on Etsy.

I'm fairly sure asking people to buy from certain sites is against MNs rules though...

fallfallfall · 20/10/2020 00:09

There are no industries that skin alive, step away from fake news.

pawsies · 20/10/2020 00:10

How do you know it's real fur? Does the advert state it?

Also how do you know it isn't a byproduct e.g. animal slaughtered (ethically?) for meat and then fur is used for this. I wouldn't trust internet videos.

CSIblonde · 20/10/2020 00:10

@WhereveriGoddamLike , I didn't see the point, she's clearly making a fortune (£60-75 a cushion)& is proudly pictured wearing a hideous real fox fur coat . She's also replied to other sellers proudly stating where she gets the fur & how great her 'company' is . It's Etsy that would have the owner to remove her after all,not a few people contacting her.

OP posts:
CSIblonde · 20/10/2020 00:16

@pawsies, yes she states it's real fur, from Hong Kong. And Google real fur Korea or Hong Kong or Yulin Dog Festival for videos on how they boil & skin alive dogs, cats & rabbits. The videos are horrific.

OP posts:
cobpickles · 20/10/2020 00:16

Etsy allow the sale of fur so you emailing won’t make them think ‘oh shit she broke our rules we need to ban her’

if you don’t like her stuff don’t buy from her 🤷🏽‍♀️

CSIblonde · 20/10/2020 00:21

@pawsies the Yulin Festival has videos everywhere ,it's notorious & obviously not faked . You can see blood everywhere & the dogs being skinned & boiled inches from cameras. How do you fake a screeching, bleeding ,tied up dog trying to escape a guy skinning it or a dog sceaming as it's lowered into a vat of boiling water, hanging from a neck pole.

katy1213 · 20/10/2020 00:23

You'd need to sell a lot of £60 cushions to make a fortune!

CSIblonde · 20/10/2020 00:23

@cobpickles of course I know that, that wasn't what I thought would happen . I just want them to know why I won't use them.

OP posts:
Viviennemary · 20/10/2020 00:23

I don't think Etsy should allow the selling of cushions made from rabbit fur. Who on earth would want one anyway. I don't like vintage fur but don't think selling it should be banned. New fur yes.

CSIblonde · 20/10/2020 00:26

@fallfallfall , Google Korea Meat Markets & Yulin Dog Festival .

what’s your AIBU?

CSIblonde · 20/10/2020 00:30

@Katy1213, cushions aren't her only product. And most customers buy at least 2 cushions then come back for other stuff if you read her reviews. Also she's got lots of shots of her home . Shabby it is not. She's obviously wealthy.

OP posts:
CSIblonde · 20/10/2020 00:31

@cobpickkes ,posting for traffic so people know there's an alternative. Shoot me now if you like. :-)

OP posts:
Elsewyre · 20/10/2020 00:37

Just to be clear the "skinned" alive comments are 100% fabricated by you based on slightly racist rumours.

I can buy rabbit flesh in Tesco it's hard to get wound up about being able to buy its skin too.

Elsewyre · 20/10/2020 00:40
@fallfallfall , Google Korea Meat Markets & Yulin Dog Festival .
And by this logic, google "French foie gras production" see what scum those English are!! After all europe/Asia all one place right!

CSIblonde · 20/10/2020 00:40

@Lockheart, I didn't ask people to buy off the other site I said check it out . They might check it out & not like it, we all have different taste . There are other similar great sites too if anyone's interested : Indiemade, Zibbet ,Bonanza etc.

OP posts:
CSIblonde · 20/10/2020 00:42

@Elsewyre, the seller stated Hong Kong was her fur source, so that's why I referenced those places . Of course animal cruelty goes on in other places too.

OP posts:
Iminaglasscaseofemotion · 20/10/2020 00:45

I think you are getting a tad off track. Ate you sire this was about the fur. I'm not sure the description of dog markets was necessary.

Readandwalk · 20/10/2020 00:46

Op you're lack of argument really isn't helping your cause.
