To feel cheated by chocolate cereal

WantANewHome · 17/10/2020 00:54

My name is New home and I am a chocoholic. It's been three hours since my last treat.

Anyway, over to cereal. The psychology draws me in. A chance to have an entire meal (breakfast) tasting of chocolate. (In my defence I'm pregnant and constantly starving)

So i buy chocolate cereal.

And it never tastes like chocolate.

Coco pops - the Kellogg ones- taste a bit chocolateY, but just about nothing else has any vague resemblance to chocolate. Apart from being brown.

I put up with this for years and then this week bought some Sainsbury's chocolate toffee breakfast bat cereal. Mmmmm!

It doesn't taste of chocolate. Or toffee.

I won't say it tastes of cardboard because that would be hyperbole and this is a serious matter.

But it tastes of nothing.

We had been going through a chocolate pillow phase. Bite them open and out oozes what we presume is nutella (ok, technically a hazelnut spread but it tastes more like bloody chocolate than chocolate pillows do!). In reality, I think the factory just injects them with ink.

In desperation I ate a multipack of double deckers today. I hang my head in shame.

Have any of you found a cereal that actually tastes of chocolate to some degree?

Should I just give up and eat a bagel?

What is the reason for this gap between expectation and reality?

Anyone work for a cereal factory and can enlighten me?

Yabu - I disagree, chocolate cereals do taste like chocolate.

Yanbu - too true, it's all a fraud.

I'm reading this whilst salivating. I've not trusted myself to buy chocolate cereal since I was a teenager because it feels like I would just munch myself into oblivion if I started my day with chocolate (I'm an evening chocolate eater!), but reading this thread has made me realise that you only live once, so fuck it - I'm going to find some delicious chocolate cereal for myself. Grin Just need to decide which one to buy!

Lonecatwithkitten · 17/10/2020 09:07

The only chocolate breakfast worth considering is hot chocolate in a bowl, yesterday's baguette toasted and dipped into the hot chocolate.

nosswith · 17/10/2020 09:07

Some things are just meant to be separate. Chocolate and cereal are two of them.

WantANewHome · 17/10/2020 09:18

@hellolittlebaby

I can fix this for you. Normal bowl of porridge (yes, bear with me here) with actual chocolate as a topping. It'll melt, will taste amazing.

Plus the porridge will keep you full until your next chocolatey treat meal.

I see you were up at 5am thinking about chocolate. Good commitment.

Yes porridge and chocolate are excellent choices. But sometimes I need a fast fix 🌝

Chocolate ice cream in milk was a good start OP, but you also need chocolate syrup.

blubberball · 17/10/2020 09:31

Smarties breakfast cereal or m&ms breakfast cereal.

(they don't make breakfast cereal. Is that from the IT crowd?)

I remember the chocolate shreddies being nice. Any coco pops except Kelloggs. The Kelloggs ones don't taste nice any more. I don't buy chocolate cereal any more for myself, as I can't be trusted.

@justanotherneighinparadise

Yes yes yes.

My quest to make hot chocolate chocolatey enough is far from over.

I also came on to say m&s triple chocolate crunch Grin

MagpieSong · 17/10/2020 09:47

Make your own? Melt chocolate, mix cereal of choice, spread over baking paper and let cool. Bam, chocolate cereal.

I’ve never done this for breakfast cereal, but I did it to top a cereal bar as a friend of mine wanted chocolate in their snack. It also works for no added sugar chocolate. I mean, it’d be super unhealthy but much better tasting Grin

PecheMelba · 17/10/2020 10:46

I feel an overwhelming urge to visit M&S today for triple choc crunch cereal. I live on my own so it will be all for me.

Add cocoa and sugar to your porridge oats first

FlyingLoo · 17/10/2020 22:01

@Mrstwiddle the Asda version of coco pops is pretty good .....still made with all sugar Grin

Spam88 · 18/10/2020 09:40

I used to go to Tesco just to buy baskets full of chocolate. No GD here, because funnily enough what you eat doesn't affect your body's ability to produce or use insulin. Not that I'd recommend that diet for other health reasons but the baby wanted it

Or someone that wants to make sure the baby I’m carrying is healthy. Either/or 🤷‍♀️
riotlady · 18/10/2020 19:51

Skip the cereal and have a crumpet with Nutella

PersicariaBistortaSuperba · 18/10/2020 19:56

Could someone describe in a lot of detail exactly how the M&S cereal tastes? I just want to live vicariously as won't be able to purchase a box any time soon.

Mrstwiddle · 25/10/2020 14:49

Thanks to those who suggested alternatives to Kellogg’s coco pops, am going to try Waitrose then the Coop brands (I’m nothing if not dedicated...)
