To feel cheated by chocolate cereal

WantANewHome · 17/10/2020 00:54

My name is New home and I am a chocoholic. It's been three hours since my last treat.

Anyway, over to cereal. The psychology draws me in. A chance to have an entire meal (breakfast) tasting of chocolate. (In my defence I'm pregnant and constantly starving)

So i buy chocolate cereal.

And it never tastes like chocolate.

Coco pops - the Kellogg ones- taste a bit chocolateY, but just about nothing else has any vague resemblance to chocolate. Apart from being brown.

I put up with this for years and then this week bought some Sainsbury's chocolate toffee breakfast bat cereal. Mmmmm!

It doesn't taste of chocolate. Or toffee.

I won't say it tastes of cardboard because that would be hyperbole and this is a serious matter.

But it tastes of nothing.

We had been going through a chocolate pillow phase. Bite them open and out oozes what we presume is nutella (ok, technically a hazelnut spread but it tastes more like bloody chocolate than chocolate pillows do!). In reality, I think the factory just injects them with ink.

In desperation I ate a multipack of double deckers today. I hang my head in shame.

Have any of you found a cereal that actually tastes of chocolate to some degree?

Should I just give up and eat a bagel?

What is the reason for this gap between expectation and reality?

Anyone work for a cereal factory and can enlighten me?

Yabu - I disagree, chocolate cereals do taste like chocolate.

Yanbu - too true, it's all a fraud.

There’s a chocolate granola by a brand called ‘fuel’ I think. It’s in a purple box and I’ve banned myself from buying it as it’s insanely moreish. I’ve ate the full box in one day before now (I am breastfeeding that’s my excuse!)

peanutbutterandfluff · 17/10/2020 03:46

Yes yes yes yes to the M and S one. I have t had it in years but it’s by far the best cereal I’ve ever had. I could eat the whole box at once.

Anotherducker · 17/10/2020 03:48

@Chipotlechipotle I also cane on to recommend the M&S one. I never buy it now as I don’t want to start the addiction again.

peachypetite · 17/10/2020 05:21

Sainsburys orange and chocolate granola is absolutely delicious!

grandmasterstitch · 17/10/2020 05:33

That cookie cereal is amazing. It's clearly designed for children but I don't care, it's too good

actiongirl1978 · 17/10/2020 05:37

Co-op coco pops are a million times better than kellogs. I don't eat junk as a rule but I make these for the children and have a bowl myself.

@user127819

You should try hagelslaag. It's a perfectly acceptable breakfast food in the Netherlands.
If you do then please buy De Ruiter. Some hagelslag has started to taste shit here too. It's chocolate sprinkles to sprinkle over your buttered sandwich or toast.
hellolittlebaby · 17/10/2020 05:42

I can fix this for you. Normal bowl of porridge (yes, bear with me here) with actual chocolate as a topping. It'll melt, will taste amazing.

Plus the porridge will keep you full until your next chocolatey treat meal.

kezziethecat · 17/10/2020 05:51

I would go for the ones with real chocolate in like granola with chocolate chunks or that m&s chocolate crunch, rather than horrible chocolate flavoured cereal.

SimplyRadishing · 17/10/2020 05:54

Aldi do a chocolate granola. It's super good

MrsWonderland · 17/10/2020 06:20

There is only one. M&S Triple Chocolate Crunch. So amazing it's beyond dangerous. Bought it for "the kids" this week as a one off annual treat - ate half of it secretly for dessert the other night. Tread carefully - there's no going back.

LuckyAmy1986 · 17/10/2020 06:37

Have you not had Krave??

Di11y · 17/10/2020 06:53

You're better off with nutella on a bagel and a glass of milk.

Jeffjefftyjeff · 17/10/2020 07:00

Lizi’s chocolate granola. Chocolatey ‘all the way through’ rather than granola with chocolate lumps. Expensive though

FlosCampi · 17/10/2020 07:00

Agree with triple chocolate crunch! A packet lasts one day in my house; my children eat heaped bowls and I sprinkle it on yoghurt and fruit compote to make a greedy breakfast sundae.

doctorhamster · 17/10/2020 07:03

You want porridge with a big spoonful of Nutella stirred in. You'll never look back.

MyMessyHouse · 17/10/2020 07:03

Lidl do 'chocolate shells'

They're amazing, really chocolaty. I've never seen anything like them apart from in French supermarkets where they are very popular and many different brands of them.

Spam88 · 17/10/2020 07:08

You want a chocolate crisp cereal, like the M&S ones or Jordan's type. I find Lidl a bit sweet, but all other options are good. Asda are very chocolatey.

Cheap chocolate pillows are nicer than krave.

I'd agree with above that Lidl chocolate shells are good. Currently working my way through a box of those...

Greenhairbrush · 17/10/2020 07:22

Porridge with choc spread in. It’s divine.

SomewhereInbetween1 · 17/10/2020 07:30

Lidl chocolate pillows are heavenly

linerforlife · 17/10/2020 07:35

I had this issue in pregnancy so I feel you. Go to Lidl. They do a granola with actual solid chocolate curls in it called Deluxe Salted Caramel and Chocolate granola. I ate so much of it my jaw used to hurt from chewing Blush

altiara · 17/10/2020 07:40

Chocolate spread on the bagel and wash it down with chocolate milkshake!
If you use the amount of Nutella that my son does you should be fine.

Trinacham · 17/10/2020 07:44

Have you tried Tescos chocolate cluster cereal? It is the best.. my husband and I are addicted Blush

Caspianberg · 17/10/2020 07:45

Make porridge. Melt favourite chocolate. Add

beansonbread · 17/10/2020 07:49

@SomewhereInbetween1

Lidl chocolate pillows are heavenly
Came to say this too. Also Aldi’s version is good too!
