My friend is away in a country that a few days into her holiday brought in quarantine restrictions upon returning to the UK. No big deal to her, she can wfh and organise deliveries etc.

She just told me she was chatting around the pool and people are confused about when quarantine actually 'starts'. Most have convinced themselves it's the day after you land 'to give them time to go shopping and get food and everything ready and stuff'.

So you're quarantined, but you have a magical window of time where you can get supplies and merrily skip round the supermarket infecting everyone saying 'Oh, I'm not in quarantine until tomorrow'.

I'm not sure if they're spectacularly thick or just so entitled they've twisted the rules to suit themselves. I don't normally get annoyed about CV or what other people do but really!?

OP posts:

When I first joined here, someone answered a poster by saying 'your house, your rules' and some prat replied that that's ridiculous blah blah blah
I was shocked that a poster thought that visitors/children could do what they wanted in somebody else's house, bizarre

Delamalama · 10/10/2020 13:53

I read that you are allowed to go to the supermarket if you're desperate, you can also pop in on your way home from the airport

ChickensMightFly · 10/10/2020 13:55

I went into my local town last week. I sat on a bench to sort my bags out and a cluster of 4 people was nearby talking about how they 'can't believe there isn't a vaccine yet'
'what arethey playing at'
'what's taking so long' etc etc
I was amazed, if a vaccine lands next year it will a record time from identification to vaccination.
These are the first people who would be up in arms if a vaccine was being administered which had unexpected side effects and consequences.
You can't fix stupid and willfully ignorant

bluebeach · 10/10/2020 14:00

I once overheard some people discussing whether a penguin was a bird or a fish.

FrancesFlute · 10/10/2020 14:03

A colleague with a thick Yorkshire accent (relevant!) asked me if I ate 'corned beef 'ash on Ash Wednesday?'

Cocomarine · 10/10/2020 14:05

My MIL told me that I had to leave baby’s bedroom door open, otherwise there wouldn’t be enough oxygen. Not even crack a window -door, open. We’d been on holiday together so I know she had herself managed to survive a night with closed doors.

zukiecat · 10/10/2020 14:11

Moving into a new house as a newly single mum with two DC.

I had no money, and was given most things, the rest came from charity shops. The DWP gave me some money to buy carpets, but there wasn't enough to do my bedroom as well. My bedroom was the size of a cupboard,

We had a rabbit that we took with us, and my mother told me to put hay and straw on my bedroom floor until I could afford a carpet!

that when the clocks go back you get back the hour the next day so it doesn't make any difference. took me about 3 hours to explain it :)

In England, you are allowed to leave your accommodation in exceptional circumstances. This includes such things as:

accessing basic necessities like food and medicines where you cannot arrange for these to be delivered

Look, there's a thread on here at the moment about astrology, and the OP, defensive after several posters had pointed out that astrology is a pseudoscience whose claims have repeatedly been disproven by credible studies, complained that science was 'small-minded' and 'didn't think outside the box', and said plaintively that she didn't understand why people 'needed evidence for everything'.

GrandAltogether · 10/10/2020 14:34

Oh, and one of my students once thought that George Eliot was TS Eliot's pen name.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 10/10/2020 14:36

A colleague asking what day of the week Good Friday was one this year.

They couldn’t grasp that it was always on a Friday - their reasoning was because Christmas Day is on different days of the week each year!

No she doesn’t! What crap!
Soubriquet · 10/10/2020 14:39

someone told me that wind turbines are massive fans that help cool the earth to try and prevent global warming.

No amount of arguing with them would change their mind. Their argument was “well if you stood in front of them, you would be cooler wouldn’t you?!”

You do realise op is talking about what the friend heard others say and not what they said do you?

Your post is quite bizarre tbh.

Fluffycloudland77 · 10/10/2020 14:40

Anyone who’s worked in healthcare will tell you you need to dial way back on how intelligent you imagine the general population is.

I’ve had patients with wounds ask me why it’s not ok to let the dog lick it because dog saliva is sterile & to them sterile = anti-septic 🤦🏻‍♀️ & why we can’t just dip the area in boiling hot tar like the olden days, olden days is any time between the big bang & roughly 1900 because that would “seal” it & they wouldn’t have to attend once a week anymore. Mainly because they’d be dead from the massive tissue damage and resulting below the knee amputation with a 5 year mortality of 85% 😃 but it would free Wednesday mornings up 🤨.

Coming to a clinic near you soon, banks of wound care Labrador’s wearing nhs lanyards & a vat of tar boiling away. This is why I was sceptical of lay people sitting on the old pct committees building new health centres because you just knew there’s a chance they are actually insane.

When Alfie Evans life support was switched off there were face book comments asking if they’d tried vitamin c & also to turn the tap on because water contains oxygen. Well intentioned but worrying to read.

HandfulofDust · 10/10/2020 14:42

I know you're allowed to go out for essentials if they can't be delivered but that is definitely not the same as having a full day before quarantine starts to do whatever you want. The vast majority of people are able to get food delivered anyway so this wouldn't apply to them.

I did hear someone say that it took 3000 years to get rid of small pox so it will obviously take the same time to develop a vaccine for covid the other day!

Cabinfever10 · 10/10/2020 14:43

From my mum your hands just staved bung it under the cold tap. I had a double compound fracture with bones sticking out of my hand in 2 places Shock

thismeansnothing · 10/10/2020 14:43

It's the moment you land.

They should be pointed towards the news stories where people in the IOM have been put in prison for not going strait home when getting back to the island and stopping to get petrol/food on the way home.

Allthedoggos · 10/10/2020 14:45

Someone I work with was furious her salary went down when she went part time! Could not understand that less hours = less money, apparently it was really unfair because she'd gone part time on return from mat leave for childcare reasons and therefore it wasn't her 'fault' that she HAD to go part time and how dare they reduce her salary. She had a massive bust up with HR over it, it was hilarious.
