As it's almost Halloween season (for what it's worth) and because I have gone through every previous thread of similar stories.
I have a few but the first one that comes to mind is that a distant elderly relative lived in a dormer bungalow. The whole house felt oppressive and dark. I can't explain the feeling. I was maybe 13. If I went to the loo I would make someone else come with me.
One day, for some reason, my dad showed me the upstairs of the house and it was even more awful feeling than the downstairs. It was literally a bedroom and a tiny en-suite. No one else in the room but there was an indentation in the mattress that looked like someone was sat on the end of the bed. Stared at it for a bit and as I went to point it out to my dad it slowly raised back up to normal size.

When I tried to broach it with elderly relative she was so blasé about it that it made me feel a bit stupid. She was like 'oh yeah, built on an Indian burial ground (in north Lancashire) so I get lots of visitors'
I've only ever felt that oppressive feeling once since in Edinburgh castle (not in the dungeons)

I don't have many spooky stories myself but have some of my mums.

She was a teacher at a sixth form college. It was part old building, that I believe had been a college for many years, run by nuns, and had some modernised additions added. When she was a young teacher there, she encountered some of her students one day absolutely bricking themselves. Turns out they'd snook up into the attic to have a sneaky smoke and bunk off class. They were sat up there when a woman asked what they were doing and put her hand on one of their shoulders, apparently she was dressed in quite old clothes and when they looked up her face was just a blank. Hence them hoot footing it out of there!

Another one she recounted was from the head caretaker. It was a wife and husband who took care of the building. I believe the basement is where a lot of the cleaning supplies, and floor buffers etc were kept, along with other bits and bobs, and some religious statues etc. One day the wife was down there, saw her husband out of the corner of her eye, round the corner to where she was working. She started chatting to him, and when he didn't respond, she went in to speak to him. He wasn't there, instead she saw a grey figure, standing in front of one of the statues, I guess maybe praying.

I'm sure she had many more from there but those are the two I remember. I spent some days there when I was younger, eg if I had an inset day sometimes she'd take me in and I'd spend the day in the library or staff room, reading or working. In the library especially I always had an uneasy feeling, like being watched (probably an overactive imagination). I went to college there myself and alas can't recount any creepy tales of my own (I think I had a chemistry exam in the loft too, no spooky lady there that day 😄).

One of the creepiest places I've visited is Chingle Hall in Lancashire. It's a very old building, with a rich history and things like priest holes etc. The owners used to do tours and had some amazing tales to tell. We didn't really experience anything there, apart from in one corridor upstairs I started almost falling over and felt so dizzy, like the floor was moving on a boat. Apparently it was quite common that people felt woozy and seasick going down it. Also in one of the bedrooms, people used to report smelling lavender. We didn't smell it, but my mood ring did turn purple in that room - which to our 90s teenage selves was ultimate proof of ghostly going's on 😄😄

My grandfather was a great cigar smoker. After he died, for years I would frequently smell cigars in places there were no cigars - such as mucking out my horse. My DP was convinced I was imagining it, or rather I was so desperate for it to be true I was smelling something different (horse wee) and interpreting it as cigars.

Until the night we were driving over the Yorkshire moors, in a part of the road where no houses etc in sight. Distinct smell of cigars in the car. My DP could smell it too, and was convinced it he turned round they'd be someone sat in the back of the car. There wasn't, and whilst he was freaked out I found it really comforting. It stopped some time ago, really miss it.

Omg Chingle Hall! The current owners have it as a private house I think. I was one of those who smelt lavender and felt a draft around my ankles. I had a family member who stayed over for a charity fundraiser and they had some weird experiences

I work as a school cleaner, as far as I can tell, the old building has been there since the late 1800’s and it has a newer 1950’s building attached by a reception area and a long greenhouse style corridor. I’ve worked there for nearly 7 years now and about 3 years ago I was moved to the first floor of the old building where I start work at 5:30am and rarely see anyone after I’ve gone up the stairs to my area.

It started with seeing shadows out of the corner of my eye, doors slamming - stuff that can easily be shrugged off. But one day, about half an hour in to my shift (so around 6am) I was in the middle classroom which has a direct line of sight to the stairwell and I saw someone walk from the stairs in the direction of the classrooms down to the right. It was way too early to be a teacher so thought maybe my manager or one of the other 4 cleaners had come up, so went to look for them to see what was up and there was no one there, all the rooms were still empty. I shook it off and went back to work.

On a different occasion, same section, again early morning and only me in that section, I was walking past a dark, unused office when I looked towards it and see a face looking out from the window in the door. I stopped and did a double take, but now I can only see my reflection and where I can see my face is lower in the window than what I’d originally seen.

I still see shadows in the hallways and through doors when I’m alone up there, but I don’t THINK it’s anything malevolent because of the most recent significant occurrence.

During lockdown, I was moved on to an alternating shift pattern and to a different area on the old building ground floor temporarily. On my first day back after two weeks off, I said morning to the other (only other) 2 people working that morning and left them in the new building to go and start my clean. I needed to go into the cleaning cupboard which is through a door and at the bottom of the stairwell that leads up to the first floor, where I’d seen the ‘person’ walk towards classrooms. As I unlocked the cupboard I heard a voice saying hello from up the stairs, so I replied good morning before remembering it was only me in that part of the building, so I walked up the stairs to check the office and my normal floor, but they were all locked up and dark.

I say good morning whenever I walk in to the stair well now.

@Pinkywoo

Here's the Savernake Forest story, I don't know how to do a clicky link so copied it.

"Found it. Warning: it's very long (sorry) and very freaky, and if anyone can come up with a rational explanation I'd be extremely grateful because I'm generally a pretty rational non-woo where's-the-evidence person, but I've never been able to explain this and it still makes my heart beat faster and the hair stand up on my arms when I think about it, years later.

I was pet sitting for my friend several years ago. She had moved into a sort of small holding right on the edge of a village in the SW, with a huge garden that backed onto trees. At the time she had a right menagerie - chickens, ducks, a couple of Shetlands, cats and four black retrievers, three fully grown and one a half grown puppy. Originally DH had been going to come with me as a little holiday but the dates she ended up having to go away for work clashed with a couple of his medical appointments so he stayed at home with our dog and I went to petsit alone.

It was about halfway through my stay, a couple of nights to go. Late evening, already dark when I heard a massive commotion from the chicken shed, banging and thumping. I assumed a fox or something had got in so went out to check. As I was halfway across the garden the noise stopped instantly as if it had been shut off; by the time I got to the shed all was calm and the chickens were all settled, mostly asleep. No sign of any intruder or disturbance at all, nothing to explain the noise or any indication that the chickens had made a noise. Bit freaky but I didn't (and still don't) know much about The Way of Chicken so I locked up again and left them to it.

As I went back in the house a small black shape ran past me out of the back door and I realised the puppy must have got out. It streaked across the garden and off towards the woods. Cue much cursing, then calling her name in vain. More cursing when she didn't come back. I grabbed a torch and put one of the other dogs on the lead, partly for protection, partly because I thought the pup was more likely to come back if I had one of her canine companions with me and partly because I didn't fancy my chances of finding my way back to the house on my own even though there were a couple of vague paths that I'd followed when walking the dogs throughout the week.

Off we trudged into the wood along one of these paths, me calling pup's name at intervals and trying not to imagine murderers and rapists behind every tree trunk. We got to a point where it felt like the trees were starting to thin out and I remember thinking that I didn't remember a clearing on this path and we must have gone wrong somewhere when the dog with me slowed right down and started to resist going forward. I tried to jolly her along - while my stomach suddenly dropped like a stone - and she started growling, a really low serious rumbling growl. By this time I was practically shitting myself. I tried shining the torch ahead but the beam just sort of bounced back off the darkness if that makes sense? I got the sense of something - or somethings - moving but just sinuous deeper black shapes against the blackness and always on the periphery of vision. (The hairs on my arms are standing up again just remembering how completely and utterly terrified I was. I have honestly never known a feeling like it.)

At this point the dog sank right down, still growling, hackles up and refused to budge. I muttered something like "Jesus, you have got to be kidding me" and this ugly gurgling inhuman sort of voice hissed, right up close as if someone was right next to me "don't say that name". At the same time there was a horrible snickering sort of laugh. I cant express how utterly petrified I was. I can't remember having any coherent thoughts apart from the word "evil". That's the only clear thing I can remember. Me and the dog were frozen to the spot with pure fear. Then a different voice, really commanding, said "GO. BACK." That sounded more in my head but echoey, where the others had sounded out in the air IYSWIM?

Wherever it came from it did the trick. Me & the dog turned and belted back through the woods. She basically towed me, I just clung onto her lead stumbling to keep up and sobbing with fear. I lost the torch somewhere on that wild run but there was no way I was stopping to find it. How I didn't run blindly into a tree I'll never know, she guided me I guess. I can remember thinking desperately that I mustn't let go of her lead or "they" would get me.

When we got back to the garden she suddenly stopped - I did fall over her this time, onto my hands and knees - turned around and started snarling, proper teeth bared, rabid-looking snarls, back at the trees and the darkness. I thought I heard the snickering again but the blood was pounding in my ears so hard I can't be sure. I scrambled up and ran to the back door and she followed me but backing and snarling all the way as if holding something at bay. Oh, and the chicken shed was banging and thumping again. I got the back door open, me and her belted in, I slammed home every bolt behind us. The other dogs left behind were staring at the door and growling too with their hackles up and when I saw all three of them, puppy included, acting like that I started to cry properly because I honestly thought I was trapped in some horror film nightmare and was going to die. I don't know - I still don't know - what the black shape was that ran past me out of the house and triggered all of this because the puppy was right there in the kitchen.

Anyway I made sure every door and window was locked and bolted, I turned on every light in the house, I wandered round mumbling all sorts of weird half-religious half-spiritual shit to ward off evil spirits. Gradually the dogs settled down and stopped growling, and eventually stopped glancing at the door. Funnily enough I didn't sleep for one second that night and I rang my DH and begged him to come over the last couple of days. I know I didn't dream it because I was covered in scratches from running through the woods and had grazed hands from where I fell over the dog in the garden.

Nothing like that has happened before or since and I hope it never, ever does. It was the single most horrible, terrifying experience of my entire life."

Oh my F'ing God.... that is terrifying!

Had been out for night with friends About 20 years ago now, was about 18/19 and we had had loads to drink.
We was getting lift home from a friend who worked at the club we had been too and they was driving around and driver wanted to stop in a car park,( it was a large park where football games played but surrounded by woods) to smoke a joint. This was about 3am
Me and Drunk friend really needed the toilet so decided we had no choice to get out and go, we went into the park as there was a small building which was toilets but they were shut so we just went on the grass.

From across this massive park I can see a small light coming towards us, I think I'm just imagining ot it just cause I'm really drunk and probably a little stoned but then my friend it like what the fuck is that. As this light gets closer my friend says it's a woman, I swear to god this was an old lady in a hair in bun in a black and white old fashioned maids outfit holding an old fashioned candle holder type thing with the glass Over it.
We both ran to the car and was screaming and both talking over each other and the guy driver friend was kind of just Laughing and saying calm down not believing us then all of a sudden he has turned car on and drove as fast as he could out of there and then said the woman had been approaching back of the car!!
No one ever believes me, especially my mum who thinks was just drunk/ stoned lol but I swear it happened. I need to contact my old friend actually and see if she remembers it like it I do.

misskatamari · 28/10/2020 08:38

@JustGetThroughTheDay yeah, last I checked the owners keep it as a private house now. Was always such a great day out when we could have tours, the creepy stories the guide told were awesome! I think we felt cold spots, but I'm not a very objective witness, as was a young teenager at the time and very much wanted to experience spooky goings on. Awesome to the lavender smelling. I can't remember if we did or not, I don't think so tho, but the dizziness happened on the way to that room I think. It was so odd, and happened before they told us it was common.

Eeek to overnight stays! I would properly be pooing myself attempting one of those! 😄

LemonPeonies · 28/10/2020 17:28

I have quite a few. The most recent being in my current flat. In the middle of divorcing my abusive ex so tensions were high, arguing with my current partner as we had a happy "accident " and I was pregnant. I had a lovely pregnancy and luckily mostly healthy, easy etc. But was quite stressed and upset, had personal difficulties and arguments with DP.

whenever my partner worked nights I couldn't sleep and had to have a candle/ hall light on with bedroom door open. I just felt like something evil was watching me from the doorway. One night I was woken at 3am ish by a loud bang in the kitchen, i thought it was a burglar but being brave (stupid) i jumped out of bed and ran into the kitchen as fast as I could. There was a broken plate in the middle of the floor Confused no idea how it got there and was dropped. I cleaned it up but didn't sleep much that night.

Noises and being watched was frequent. Woke up a few times in the night and I could feel it, sometimes even sort of see it in the darkness watching me, even with my partner snoring in the bed next to me. My baby is 11 months old now and (the hallway is so small between the bedroom and living room for reference)he has a real thing about it. I never particularly looked there or paid attention to it, but since he was a few months old he would crane his neck to look in the doorway/ hallway no matter where he was. My parents noticed it without me telling them, I told them and they kinda joke about it but they are very woo so definitely believe me. My lo babbles and constantly crawls towards it now, I still don't know whether it's a negative presence or not but I did feel negative energy from there at the time. Not so much now.

LemonPeonies · 28/10/2020 18:05

Might as well tell another one. In 2012 I was a 3rd year nursing student. Was on a "break" from my now exH, he was trying to punish me for standing up for myself basically so forced to live in a shared house for students for a year (was secretly hoping this would make me fail the course but alas he didn't succeed). Anyway, it was a normal Victorian house in a city not far from main roads. My bedroom was the only bedroom downstairs as I was the only female, 4 other guys all had rooms upstairs. I had my own bathroom off the kitchen so felt almost like my own flat, landlady was epically lovely. So my room was large and had a big window and painted pale green and blue, lovely in the daylight.

Below me was a basement and concrete floor so that explains why it was always cold. But the atmosphere definitely changed at night. Also the original furniture was kept by the landlady as she liked it, really old dark wood including the bed 😬. There were also seriously old black and white photographs all over the walls of our cities cathedral, inside etc and or the organ. An old original organ was in the corner of my room too. There were various crucifixes on the walls, it was very odd. At night I couldn't sleep, I felt like something evil was leering over me and always put my head under the covers. When I did manage to drop off I never had nice dreams (usually I do), only horrific violent nightmares. I thought I was going mad. My parents didn't live far so I ended up going round there a lot and they never complained. They came overa few times but my father always looked uncomfortable so never stayed long.

Once in the kitchen I heard a man walk behind me and say my name menacingly. There was no one else there of course. I felt depressed and lost loads of weight, it's a wonder I passed my degree! Would wake up talking to figures, no recollection of what we were talking about but it wasn't friendly chit chat. Sometimes it looked like my nan but I could tell it wasn't her.

My friend who doesn't believe in anything like that came round and complained she kept seeing something black out of the corner of her eye. But the most frightening was one night about this time of year, my teenage sister stayed the night and we watched scary films, got a takeaway really fun girly night. She was sat opposite me at one point and I noticed her staring g straight ahead, unable to tell me what was wrong just staring terrified at the corner of my room. After a while she said she saw a black shadow figure with a hood crouched down by the wall behind me staring at her with no face. Then still crouched but apparently big, it slowly walked through my bed into the wall. Even more scary was the next day I went to my older sisters house for tea ( we all lived close back then). I didn't mention it to her but a few days later she called me and asked what the hell I brought to her house! After I left that evening she saw the shadow of her 7 yo daughter crouched by the mirror, she thought brushing her hair or something thought nothing of it. But after she walked past it, thought it was way too big to be her. My dsis found her daughter in the living room watching TV. After that spoke to my other dsis about what happened at my flat the previous night was convinced it followed me to her house. Thankfully I left soon after. I wish I had spoke to my landlady about it, I dropped hints but she never mentioned anything. I might get back in touch with her just to see if anyone else witnessed anything...

LemonPeonies · 28/10/2020 18:10

Forgot to mention my DF said he didn't want to scare me while I lived there but he hated coming round because he felt an evil presence in my room. He is very woo and I may share his stories later.

Crazyhorses123 · 28/10/2020 18:27

Last year my dm died unexpectedly, now she loved my dog and on one of her last visits bought her a ball. A couple of weeks after she died we couldn't find the ball anywhere, my dh and I searched everywhere, it was nowhere to be seen, I was upset about losing it. Anyway a couple of days later we were going to bed and as we got up to go upstairs the ball just randomly rolled out from under our footstool. My dh was shocked I felt really comforted

Messagetoyoucassie · 28/10/2020 19:16

Okay, I'll bite. My DH is quite woooo and has a few stories, he's quite scientific and rational in all other ways, just can't explain a few things that has happened over the years. Any, his most recent "encounter" was a few months back. He works as a gardener in our town which is at the seaside and known for it's military connections. Anyway, he was going for his lunch in the small room used by the gardeners just off one of the main park areas. It's quite a dingy old room with a kettle, microwave and a table and chairs, not much in it. He walked into the room and was surprised to see a tall, very thin man standing at the back of the room. He said "oh I didn't realise anyone else was in". The man just looked at him blankly and husband didn't feel right. Anyway hubby turned round to put lunch in microwave and man was sitting at table. DH noticed he has an old fashioned dark uniform on. He said man continued to stare right through him. DH promptly ran out room! Opened door after 5 minutes and no one there.Went and told his colleagues who could see he was visibly shaken. He told them what he had seen. His workmate says "yeah I've seen him a few times, but outside marching back and forth as if he had a gun and was on guard." Described exact same person, clothes etc. Says he marches through the wall and disappears.
OH says he found out area around garden used to be a Fort dating from Napoleonic Wars, also used in WW2. Creepy eh?

If you want something lengthy to read - forums.forteana.org/index.php?threads/timeslip-at-waterloo-station.17728/page-6

Scroll down to the Piccadilly Circus story - Carl Grove’s document on the Vanishing Cafe in Piccadilly Circus. I first read that story on the Digital Spy forum and the original poster then moved to the Fortean Times.

The entire thread about time slips in rail stations is very interesting if you have time to spare.

Gives me goosebumps.

I was in a pub in Henley and I felt this horrible presence in the loo - so I got out fast. When downstairs and asked the barman if the pub had a ghost. He looked at me like I was completely crazy. So I googled it and sure enough The Bull on Bull Street has a ghost.

ChocBeforeCock · 20/11/2020 22:54

@Funkypolar wow I’ve just read the vanishing cafe story. Really creepy!

Funkypolar · 21/11/2020 10:10

@ChocBeforeCock I love it, it’s just so weird. I was so happy when I re-read it years later on the Fortean Times forum and read the in depth analysis by Carl. Fascinating. And really creepy.

I stayed in an old farmhouse in Wexford in the 90s. The other people in the house were all working with me so when we arrived in the house we chose our rooms. I didn't think much of one of the bedrooms, very old brown furniture, lino on the floor, lemon patterned wallpaper. A few weeks later I dropped something in to the room and it had been done up. I asked my colleague about it and nobody knew what I was talking about- it had always looked like that. Did I experience a ghost room? Confused

Yukkatree12 · 28/11/2020 18:26

These are some of the experiences that I had whilst visiting/staying at my sisters house that she used to live in. There are so many experiences that myself and others had in this house.

This is a bit outing, when my Dsis moved in she had an experience where she saw a figure walk from one end of the kitchen to the other. It scared her so much that I had to stay with her that night as her partner was away. A few years later, Dsis partner died in the garage and that is when activity increased.

Afterwards I stayed with Dsis to help her with the children. In the kitchen there was a window which looked straight onto the garage. For obvious reasons, my Dsis requested the blind to stay down so she didn’t have to see the garage.

We got into a routine where one of us would look after the baby one night and the other the next night. That night was my Dsis turn to look after the baby, I woke up early in the morning to get the other children up and dressed ready for school, my Dsis was asleep. I went into the kitchen to make breakfast and the blind was all the way up. I thought Dsis had changed her mind during the night and had rolled it up. It was a manual roller blind, nothing special. I had to go back upstairs and check to see if they were getting up. In the meantime, my Dsis woke up and went into the kitchen. She started shouting my name ‘Yukkatree, Yukkatree why did you open the blind?! You knew not too!’ I told her I thought she had done it. Dsis then tried to roll the blind back down but it was wedged and we could never roll it down again. It was strange.

Whilst my Dsis was on holiday I was tasked with going round to her house to feed her cat and make sure he was fine (Dsis was gone for a couple of days). I hated going. It was a really hot day, when I went into that house it was a ice box and I could see my breath. The cat was hiding upstairs so I went into the kitchen. Every kitchen cabinet door was open. Tried to think rationally - maybe the cat had done it, the back door was locked and my sister had the other key. I put food into the the cat bowels etc and I heard a growl coming from the corner of the kitchen.

I’ve heard dogs growl and even my cat growls but I’ve never heard anything like what that sounded like and I haven’t since. I ran out of there screaming!

There’s so many more experiences!

I know this is an old thread now but Im trying to find the account where a poster had a mirror which gave the reflection into her kitchen and her sons (I think) told her that they'd seen a figure when looking in the mirror. One day she looked and saw the same (hooded?) figure in the same place they'd seen him but he wasn't visible to the naked eye. Can anyone find it because its the best story EVER!

Hope you all had a good Christmas, back at work for me, hence mucking about on Mumsnet :-)
