As it's almost Halloween season (for what it's worth) and because I have gone through every previous thread of similar stories.
I have a few but the first one that comes to mind is that a distant elderly relative lived in a dormer bungalow. The whole house felt oppressive and dark. I can't explain the feeling. I was maybe 13. If I went to the loo I would make someone else come with me.
One day, for some reason, my dad showed me the upstairs of the house and it was even more awful feeling than the downstairs. It was literally a bedroom and a tiny en-suite. No one else in the room but there was an indentation in the mattress that looked like someone was sat on the end of the bed. Stared at it for a bit and as I went to point it out to my dad it slowly raised back up to normal size.

When I tried to broach it with elderly relative she was so blasé about it that it made me feel a bit stupid. She was like 'oh yeah, built on an Indian burial ground (in north Lancashire) so I get lots of visitors'
I've only ever felt that oppressive feeling once since in Edinburgh castle (not in the dungeons)

There’s a really fucking creepy story here on mumsnet in some woods.

MamTDM · 30/09/2020 16:56

I was walking home from school with my DS a few years back, when he was 10. As we got to the corner of our road, there was nobody else around, but a blue bouncy ball dropped straight down from nowhere and bounced directly up and down right in front of us about five or six times, as if being patted down from about waist height by someone playing with it, before DS grabbed it. It might, I suppose, have been dropped by a bird, but we tried and failed umpteen times to recreate the way it kept bouncing straight up and down. Left to its own devices it just did what normal balls do and bounced off in random directions.

I used to go to ABC in the early 2000s. Could not stay in the main block without a lot of booze! The houses were ok but the main block at night, especially downstairs, was super creepy.

It's all changed and luxury now.[/quote]
I was in Copmandale and it wasn't much better! Loved the place though and had a fantastic time there.

@hammeringinmyhead, The Dear David story does my head in. I’m not sure why it frightened me so much but I have to stop myself thinking about to much as I’m afraid putting out to much energy might draw him to me 🤭

One night I was alone in the house when I was woken by a loud clattering noise (it was dawn so sort of a grey light in the room). I opened my eyes to see a figure standing by DH's side of the bed frantically sorting through the stuff on his bedside table.

My first thought was that DH had inexplicably come home early (he was away with work), then "Crap. I'm being burgled". Then it occurred to me that I might actually be in serious trouble if it was a burglar who had no qualms about going into a room where someone was sleeping.

At that point, he (it) ran round to my side of the bed, too fast to be human. It was more like the way a spider moves - fits and starts. He started going through the stuff on my bedside table, knocking it everywhere. I was lying as still as possible so he wouldn't realise I was awake. Then he froze as though listening for something, and then charged out of the room, again very frenzied and violent. As soon as he crossed the threshold, the noise of his footsteps stopped dead.

I lay there awake and frozen till daylight, convinced he was standing just outside my room. Nope, nothing, and nothing was disturbed on either bedside table.

I've had sleep paralysis before and know very well what it feels like, and it wasn't that. I was completely awake. I don't believe in ghosts though, so I don't know what caused it. It felt very real though.

I’ve lots of stories, but this is the most recent and I’ve not told it one here before. It’s not creepy at all, sorry.
Towards the end of March this year I started seeing a young girl in my house. She was a similar shape and build to my DD13 and when I saw her out the corner of my eye I’d assume it was DD, but when I turned to ask her why she was still up/ sitting in the dark or what she was doing I realised it was a different girl: she had a fringe when dd doesn’t, her hair was light brown when DD’s is honey blonde. Her clothes were different too: a grey smocked/ empire line dress/ pinafore. She’d fade away after a minute or so.
A couple of days later DH became very ill with Covid, and I continued to see her regularly. I quite liked her presence and used to say hello etc. I was sleeping on the sofa as DH was isolating in our room. 2 weeks after DH fell ill he was starting to recover when I developed a temperature, exhaustion and breathlessness. DH came downstairs to look after the dc, and I went up to our room to sleep. I saw the girl standing watching me, then fell asleep for most of the next 24 hours. On waking I felt drained, my muscles ached, my head ached so I stayed in bed. I laid awake for a couple of hours before DH came to check on me. He went to sit on the side of the bed and immediately asked which of the dc had been in: he’d told them all not to disturb me under any circumstances. No one had been in, and I told him that. He told me to feel the side of the bed: it was very warm in one patch just by the edge as if someone had just that second got up from sitting there. No one had been in the room, and I’d been lying right on the other side of our super king size bed. The only pets I’d seen in 2 days apart from DH was the girl, who’d been watching over me from right next to there.
I’ve never seen her again, but I’m convinced she came to watch over me.

Howmanysleepsnow · 30/09/2020 22:44

Sorry, that should be *the only person I’d seen, not pets!

OP just curious, is there really an Indian burial ground in lancs? Can u tell me where it is? I used to live in lancs and am interested in local history.

Mine was in New Zealand an old hotel in the South island. We were going to the Fox glaciers the next day, so needed to get up early we chose not close the curtains. Around midnight and a full moon (I couldn't sleep) I saw a women walk through the wall, white hair, old fashioned clothing look at me and a brief smile walked straight through the wall to my right. I snuggled into my husband and my heart was beating fast thinking should I wake him, but he would say what can I do about it.I eventually went to sleep and at breakfast told him about it.sceptical him thought my imagination. We were off really early the next day but I wanted to ask reception about the ghost I'd seen but thought they may think I'm mad so checked out without asking.that one regret, would love to of asked if any one else had
Talked about this lady visitor as I had.

FjordFiestas · 01/10/2020 01:04

In my sleep one night I began shaking my husband and yelling "YOU NEED TO WARN THE FRENCH ABOUT THEIR PENCILS" over and over and over again. The Charlie Hebdo shooting was the next morning.

Living in a two story flat in London in my 20’s. Bedrooms/bathroom/hallway downstairs and living room/kitchen upstairs.

Not long after I bought it, a friend moved in for a while. She read a lot and would pile books up in several piles by the far bedroom wall (not huge towers, maybe 7 books high). We worked together - came home one day to find Books scattered round the room. Not just like something (like wind from closed windows!) could have toppled them over - some of them were round the other side of her bed. Weird.

Then, my sister moved in there with me. Had quite a few odd things happen, but two stick in my mind.

I smoked, my sister didn’t., so I tended to go into the kitchen to smoke. My sister had gone downstairs to the loo and I was smoking in the kitchen whilst looking out the window. I felt a VERY definite “finger prod” on one of my bum cheeks. I swung around a shouted “Oi”, but no one was there. My sister called from downstairs to see if I was ok. So weird, it was such a definite feeling.

Another evening, my sister and I were sat at the dining table in the kitchen having a natter and then there was a fairly loud “thwack” sound. She looked at me and asked if I heard it and I said yes. She said that her back bra strap had just smacked against her back. Quite a few other things happened there (weirdly, something someone else kind of alluded to earlier, was the sound of papers being thumbed through really really fast).

I never felt uncomfortable there though. I now live in a 300+ year-old house, quite remote, no street lights. But have never felt anything here or felt uncomfortable.

Oh one that I'd forgotten! Late mother in law was a 17th century re-enactor and in later life had quite significant disabilities so was unable to camp "authentically" - she always booked a hotel nearby. There was one particular event she loved and she went every year. Imagine her surprise one year to be regaled with the story of the hotel ghost, an fragile white-haired lady in 17th century clothes who walks very slowly and sadly down the stairs and then disappears....

(into her son's car, as it happened!)

This has just reminded me that I gave rise to a 'ghost story' myself, years ago. I was a junior academic working crazy hours in my first job, living alone and writing lectures till all hours -- occasionally, in terrible weather, if I'd stayed very late, I just used to sleep in my office (I had a futon and kept some spare clothes there) high up in a towerblock on campus. We weren't supposed to, obviously, so I was discreet, turned off lights etc. Imagine my surprise to hear, years later, from a security guard, of the 'Grey Lady of Tower 1' who could be seen at a high window wearing a grey hood on stormy nights. That was me, in the oversized grey hoodie I used to wear to sleep in...

In one of my university holidays I did some temp work at a college. To be fair the place was generally creepy (you could hear the test of a siren when things were quiet from a famous mental health unit for criminal justice ....and on one occasion had to be escorted to our cars due to an escape...I absolutely swear no exaggeration) but in general it didnt really bother me. I rather like the macabre.

The filing (days before most things were electronic) was in the basement , which to be fair whilst it was in a stately home it had been refitted in a really modern way. The type of college actually meant their needed to be security at quite a high level so keypad door, alarm that beeped etc (this is relevent because the door made a beep everytime not opened ). It had a modern movement sensor light fitted so it went off it sensed no movement after a time.

The others had told me it was haunted and I assumed it was winding up the temp to be honest so wasn't worries and pooled off down there with a stack that would take me up until lunch time.

To be fair I was a late teen and wasn't exactly motivated so I was filing and wandering across the length of the basement (no concept of efficiency at 19 ) and was completely alone.

Unsurprisingly I wasn't moving fast because if I finished too quickly I would be given more work to do and at one point I had stood still for so long that the lights went out.

Creepy basement , lights out still didn't bother me , I started to raise my hand to wave it to alert the sensor to switch the lights back on and footsteps started in the stack behind me. I froze completely and they kept moving (the floor above was insulated and I'd heard no footsteps from above all morning where there were definitely people) , still frozen , the footsteps got louder and started to sound like they were running towards me.

Far too scared to look behind me I started waving my arms madly to get the light on. It clicked on and the footsteps stopped abruptly. It sounded like just behind me. It took the longest time to get the courage to turn around.......when I finally did unsurprisingly absolutely nothing there.

I looked around the room behind the stacks nothing g there.

As I said if the door had opened and someone had come in it would have beeped. No beep.

So, about 15 years ago, DP and I were living in a flat in China Town, London. It was a smallish place, and our bedroom was off a long hallway, with the bedroom door facing the front door.

At the time, my partner had a large dog and at night she would lie at the front door, guarding (typical German Shephard.) Anyway, this one night, I woke to the sound of heavy footsteps walking up with hallway...a really distinct noise on the wooden floor. As I opened my eyes, I saw a very tall man dressed all in black pass by the door, which was slightly ajar, and then the dog following him. I instantly froze and for some odd reason, pulled the duvet over my head. I thought we were being burgled and the best thing to do was stay silent and let them come and go with whatever they wanted.

But as I did that, the dog came barging into the room and started to nudge me with her nose. I ignored her so she ran around the bed to do the same to my partner, who woke, got up and put her out of the room. The whole time I lay there just waiting on all hell breaking loose, but instead my partner came back to bed and went to sleep.

I lay awake for hours, listening and wondering what the hell was going on. No more footsteps, and no more signs of the man. And as I got a bit more awake with some clarity, I thought it odd that the dog didn't bark. She hated men and would most definitely have attacked an intruder. But that was in hindsight.

The next night, the same thing happened. Around 3am, the heavy footsteps walked up the hallway, and behind it the patter of dog paws following. But this time the bedroom door was shut so I didn't see anyone.

After that night, the dog stopped lying at the front door, and she started to lay in the bathroom on the bath mat (that was where I saw this "man" heading too on the first night. And I never heard or saw anything again.

I don't know what was going on. It mostly definitely wasn't human and it was real enough to shake me. Our bedroom wall was attached to a church (that's now Walkabout on Charing Cross Road.) I don't know if that's got anything to do with it? But it was all very strange!

Few years ago my family rented a holiday home in the south of Ireland. Massive big house with its own pound out back and surround by forest. 5 bedrooms. 10 adults and 3 children ages 6 months , 3 and 4.
3 rooms where downstairs and me and my two sisters had a room each with our partners and children. I was woke in the middle of the night to a window banging open and close, open and close, open and close. It sounded like it was coming from the kitchen. I don’t get frightened much as I take part in paranormal investigations with a local well known team. So of course around 2am I have enough of the noise and go to investigate and find to open window to close it. Low and behold not one window in the house was open and Of course they banging stopped as soon as I left the bedroom. I went back to bed and slept. Next morning my sister and her partner thanked me for waking up in middle of night and going to close the window as they couldn’t sleep with it also and they were to frightened to venture out of their room in an unfamiliar house to close it. I told them I couldn’t find the source of the noise or an open window. Next night same thing happened.

So about 3 days into the trip we went out a drive and on the way back to the house we passed another house on the way and my daughter (3) explained that the colour of red brick of the house was the same colour as Mary’s hair who lives in the holiday house. Eek... my nephew (4) agreed with her and said Mary will want to play when we are back. Bit freaked out by this point but didn’t want to question to much as children have their imaginations and all that. Last day of the trip and kids are playing out the back. Until my mum noticed they were gone. The house was that big everyone spilt up screaming their names and searching every corner of ghat house, my uncle and brother jumped in the pond searching and my dad into the forest. Real panic, I mean real fear. A fear no parent should experience ... I mean we checked everyone room numerous times.. screaming so loud that a farmer near the house cane to the gate to ask was all ok. We rang the police who showed up and started taking descriptions until my mum started yelling from upstairs she had found them... sitting in the bath. A bathroom we had all been in. My mum was crying with relief sitting on the floor catching her breath and both children explained ghat Mary told them to hide and that it was a fun game and they should stay with her.

On the day we were due to leave two cars out of 4 had flat tyres- appeared to be bolts in it . Had to wait ok recovery truck to come.. take off tyres.. being tryes away to be fixed or replaced and come back. We did not enter ghat house to wait. We sat in our cars for hours and waited on that recovery truck returning. We won’t be going back to that house

Pond out back*

Vagaries · 02/10/2020 21:48

Seriously, @2020wish, you entered five bedrooms full of sleeping people in the middle of the night in search of a banging window, and your sister and her partner were too scared to leave their room in an unfamiliar holiday house to find and shut an open window? And you really think the supernatural had a hand in mysteriously hiding three children, rather than that they just hid? (Presumably not including the baby...)

2020wish · 02/10/2020 22:53

No i entered the rooms down stairs that the banging window was coming from like the kitchen that I stated. But double checked the living room and hallway and down stairs toilet. I didn’t say I entered the 5 bedrooms only when they rest of the house was looking for the kids. I am just telling the story how it happened. The kids could of been hiding yes but it was just creepy how they mentioned the ‘Mary’. If you don’t believe it that’s fine. It’s creepy stories thread. So no need to be rude. And maybe get off the thread if you want to past judgement

2020wish · 02/10/2020 22:54

And yes my sister is person that won’t enter a dark room and fully admits it. Her fella back then was a wuss too. Dunno how that’s hard to believe. Plenty of people in the world the same.

Just sharing a creepy story on a creepy thread

2020wish · 02/10/2020 22:56

And no one mention three children hiding.i mentioned the 3 and 4 year old. I just mentioned the baby was there in the holiday

2020wish · 02/10/2020 23:00

Ok I’ll correct a few things. I meant no window I knew of in the house was open. But I checked down stairs where the sound was coming from and children playing out back was the older children. I thought it spoke for itself that a 6 month old wouldn’t be playing out the back. Pretty obvious
