AIBU to be utterly fed up with the AIBU board being a dumping ground for any old thread?

I have been a user of Mumsnet for a number of years, and although this has always been a problem I have noticed it get worse and worse recently.

Though there are a large number of smaller, topic-specific boards a growing amount of Mumsnet users are choosing to ignore this in favour of posting in AIBU or Chat for ‘traffic’. This is a cyclical problem, users guarantee that these smaller boards will be irrelevant, unused, and garner no traffic they don’t post in them them, and it also clogs up other boards with nonsense that does not belong there and cements those ones as the few that are used. Over the last 24hours in AIBU I have seen product reviews, requests for weight-loss advice, and wedding dress ideas, and many more I won’t bother to list. Valid threads, but they have nothing to do with AIBU.

Mumsnet do not seem to police the flagrant misuse of boards, and frankly I am getting fed up. (Yes I acknowledge that, ultimately, this post adds to the problem.)

I was one of those God-awful people who posted about weight loss advice. Thank you for the acknowledgment.

vodkaredbullgirl · 18/09/2020 11:38

Not really noticed.

yellowgusset · 18/09/2020 11:39

I'd personally put this in Site Stuff.

Bwahahaha Grin

I mostly hang around on "active" so don't really notice which boards people are posting on. I've been guilty of posting for traffic though and make no apologies for it Grin

Touché 😂
lioncitygirl · 18/09/2020 11:44

I think this post isn’t meant for AIBU op. Wink

Can’t say I’m bothered - perhaps scroll pass and pick the titles that appeal to you OP?

SummaLuvin · 18/09/2020 11:45

@yellowgusset correct, and if you read the entire post I acknowledge at the bottom that this adds to the problem, i.e. this is another posts that doesn't truly belong here. However, I felt for the greater good and getting MN to action something it would be best to put it in AIBU, which is the most misused board of all.

Thanks for the feedback :)

There's definitely too many posts on weight gain/dieting since March.

SummaLuvin · 18/09/2020 11:47

@JalapenoDave I never insulted you, just said it was irritating. Like bikes on pavements, not where they belong. Here's a link to the weight-loss section, there are number of boards to choose from, hope this helps. www.mumsnet.com/Talk/weight_loss_chat

I agree - these posters are sub-human scum, OP!

BlackbirdFirst · 18/09/2020 11:49

Bear with it!

Jojoanna · 18/09/2020 11:51

Is there a MIL board ?

toastofthetown · 18/09/2020 11:55

YANBU at all. Am I being unreasonable exists to to ask the question 'am I being unreasonable?'. If you don't suspect that you might be unreasonable then your post is probably better placed on one of the many other Mumsnet boards.

When I joined there was a clear difference in content between Chat and AIBU, but now I often can't tell the difference, which is a shame. At least it means I'm spending less time on Mumsnet.

Havaiana · 18/09/2020 11:55

Acknowledging that you’re posting in the wrong board yourself doesn’t make you any less hypocritical for preaching one thing and practicing another.

Why do you think you’re above the rules?

Havaiana · 18/09/2020 11:56

At least it means I'm spending less time on Mumsnet.

Well great for you.

cctvrec · 18/09/2020 12:01

I kind of agree OP.

AIBU is where we go for the juicy stuff. Let's face it, few posters actually believe they could be being U but it's a bloody good place to rant or find an interesting thread. I couldn't care less about weight loss or if someone is being unreasonable to keep a kitten they're fostering. Let's keep AIBU for the good, gripping posts and parking threads (where the OP is almost never the unreasonable one!" And not forgetting the "Zilla" threads.

RingORingORoses · 18/09/2020 12:01

Hey everyone @SummaLuvin has SPOKEN!!!

You are all doing it wrong! This is not the way to mumsnet!

The topic police are out!!

LoveLanky · 18/09/2020 12:04

Off with their heads !

Sparklfairy · 18/09/2020 12:05

First came the grammar Nazis, then came the board Nazis - "you will post on the correct board and I am the maker of the rules that you will obey!" Hmm

Are you feeling a lack of control in your home life OP that compels you to try and control strangers online? Halo

I am trying to start an uprising to get this mess sorted once and for all. The more people the better!

Havaiana · 18/09/2020 12:15

You’re going to put off people from posting because they find the right board.

It’s not funny, a lot of vulnerable women need AIBU.

Havaiana · 18/09/2020 12:15

*can’t find

Sparklfairy · 18/09/2020 12:16

Hm you've caught me on a bad day. MN is not your "mess" to clean up and I'm feeling distinctly rebellious teen rather than neurotic mum battling "mess" Grin might start an aibu thread just to annoy you

Threads get moved by admin if there's a more suitable place for better advice (mostly legal, relationships etc). People also advise to go to the low carb bootcamp thread or other long running threads on the relevant topic. I'm not sure why you're getting so twitchy about this!

Thanks for the fake concern! But no I don't feel a lack of control, I think it says more about you than me that you are so resistant to things being in a logical order. Maybe you like everything to be like a junk drawer, I do not.

Serious question for everyone who doesn't see it as a problem, would you support just having one large Mumsnet board and doing away with the sub-boards all together? For me, the boards exist so that I can browse though topics I am interested it, and largely miss out ones I'm not. I frequent the baby name board as that interests me, but never visit the weight loss sections so I ignore them.

Obviously with a topic as broad as AIBU there will be posts which intersect other topics such as relationships or education or pregnancy etc. but for me, if the AUBU poll is irrelevant to your post it should be on a different board. The answers on this thread and posts in the topic mean I suppose I'm in a minority, but then I genuinely can't see why Mumsnet a board called Am I Being Unreasonable, when the threads in are just general chatter.
