Is it just me, or do lilies smell like garbage?

I find the smell unbearable, stomach churning. I got two bunches from friends in the last few weeks, and had to bin them both as they were giving me a headache and nearly making me gag.

Is this widespread or am I the only one?

At least I know my sense of smell works. Silver linings and all that.

Lilies are a bit over powering but I quite like the smell it reminds me of insence sticks, not garbage at all imo.

Shoppingwithmother · 09/09/2020 17:21

Oh god yes, I won’t have lilies in the house - I think they smell like cat piss.

Pollypocket89 · 09/09/2020 17:22

No, they smell like vomit

Br1ll1ant · 09/09/2020 17:23

Aren’t they pollinated by flies? So quite possibly as supposed to smell like garbage Grin. Can’t stand them myself either.

PeartreeProductions · 09/09/2020 17:23

You're not alone, absolutely vile smell. Also just some advice for everyone, don't give lilies to anyone who has a cat as the are deadly to pussycats, even if they just ingest a tiny amount of the flower.

DianasLasso · 09/09/2020 17:24

I hate the smell - always makes me think of something going rotten somewhere.

TeensArghhh · 09/09/2020 17:26

Agreed!

MerryGrinchmas1 · 09/09/2020 17:28

I second the cat piss! Can't stand them!

Iwasonceabrownie · 09/09/2020 17:29

They make me wheeze quite badly.

ShebaShimmyShake · 09/09/2020 17:29

I quite like them but the smell is very strong, so if you don't like it, it'll be hard to take.

Pleasenomoreglitter · 09/09/2020 17:32

I can't stand them, they give me a nauseous headache.

Averyyounggrandmaofsix · 09/09/2020 17:34

I don't like the smell of incense either up be fair!

ScribblyGum · 09/09/2020 17:34

You are not alone in finding them vile.
They don’t smell rotten to me just punch in the face sickly sweet lily stench.
I won’t have them in the house.

unimaginativeusernamehere · 09/09/2020 17:35

I don't like the smell of lilies either.
My grandpa who was a minister said they always reminded him of funerals.

WhatWouldJKRDo · 09/09/2020 17:38

They give me headaches. Can’t abide them.

1Morewineplease · 09/09/2020 17:46

I agree, they smell vile, and if you don't cut the anthers off they stain where they fall.

DodgeRainClouds · 09/09/2020 17:47

They make me feel sick! My ex boyfriend dumped me a week before my birthday. He then sent me a bunch of lilies. I was so heartbroken and the smell was so overpowering I binned them. If I smell them now it reminds me of that time.

Yellownotblue · 09/09/2020 17:47

Glad it’s not just me!

They also remind me of funerals, so they make me sad as well as sick.

To me they are like the fishy plastic smell you get when an electric socket is overheating.

flatwhite99 · 09/09/2020 17:49

Oh my god. I love them 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Whatsnewpussyhat · 09/09/2020 17:50

Yes to them smelling like cat piss.

NotEverythingIsBlackandWhite · 09/09/2020 17:52

They do have quite an overpowering smell which used to give me a headache. However, someone bought me some a couple of years ago and despite them having a strong smell, I loved it. I suppose our sense of smell changes with time.

nancybotwinbloom · 09/09/2020 17:52

I love them but I cut the stamens and pollen parts out of the centre as soon as they open

SliceOfFriedGold · 09/09/2020 17:54

I love them, but hate the smell of daffodils.

mrsbyers · 09/09/2020 18:08

Yes I have some here now and keep thinking the cat has pissed somewhere in the room or sniffing myself
