Is it just me, or do lilies smell like garbage?

I find the smell unbearable, stomach churning. I got two bunches from friends in the last few weeks, and had to bin them both as they were giving me a headache and nearly making me gag.

Is this widespread or am I the only one?

At least I know my sense of smell works. Silver linings and all that.

Foul smelling things, headache inducing and toxic to pets, every part of them is toxic.

I have always asked for no flowers to be sent if they contain lilies, especially those white funeral ones, but if they do arrive I pull them out and bin them, even though I no longer have pets, I don't want to kill the neighbour's cat.

Freddie's flowers have a lily-free option - strangely it's not well promoted on the site, I only found out because I asked about it.
Does result in deliveries being a bit chrysanthemum heavy though.

Stannisbaratheonsboxofmatches · 09/09/2020 19:40

You’re all daft - they are lovely!

fluffiphlox · 09/09/2020 19:40

What sort of lilies?

MessEnoughClean · 09/09/2020 19:43

To me they smell like piss and puke mixed up. Awful! When my dad died we had so many sent to us, appreciated the thoughts so couldn't bin them but I had to put them all in one room with the door shut and just didn't go in there until they died. So pointless looking back but urgh they are disgusting

Flymetothetoon · 09/09/2020 19:44

My DH buys me lilies sometimes even though I have told him
A) I don't like them - funeral flowers

B) Four cats in the house - poisonous to cats

He still brings lilies thinking it's a ' nice thing and I am just ungrateful' Hmm

speakout · 09/09/2020 19:46

I love them- similar notes to jasmine and stocks. Heavy, heady, sumptious.

HiddenInTheAttic · 09/09/2020 19:47

Oriental lillies (the pinkish ones) smell awful - overpowering and really pungent to the point they make me feel quite nauseous. But I quite like white lilies.

PinkiOcelot · 09/09/2020 19:50

I love lilies. They’re my favourite. I had them as my wedding bouquet flowers. I like the smell.

Skyla2005 · 09/09/2020 19:51

Cats piss !

FindingNeverland1 · 09/09/2020 19:53

Hate them. Just binned a very expensive bunch of flowers (gift) because it included lilies and the whole think stank and made me feel ill.

Feellikedancingyeah · 09/09/2020 19:54

They smell like death 😷

Caspianberg · 09/09/2020 19:55

They smell of gas to me. I once had a bunch gifted, and ended up calling out British Gas thinking we had a gas leak

Bigbuurrrd · 09/09/2020 19:58

I'm so happy I'm not the only one who thinks they smell like cat piss.
They are not the only flowers that I think smell awful though, don't have flowers at mine but my dad often buys my mum a bunch and they nearly always smell of urine to me, lilies are the worst though.

Saucery · 09/09/2020 20:04

I love the smell if passing by, but it’s a bit overpowering if I’m sat in the same room as them.
DH bought me a bouquet a few weeks ago and I had to take the lilies out and put them in an earthenware vase in the garden, they were so strong. They lasted nearly 2 weeks out there, smelling away!

I do want my coffin covered in them though. If your eyes aren’t streaming cos I’m dead then they can jolly well stream with irritation Wink

CarolVordermansArse · 09/09/2020 20:13

@speakout

I love them- similar notes to jasmine and stocks. Heavy, heady, sumptious.
My neighbours have trained jasmine up the trellis by my bedroom window. It makes me ill.
TheWordWomanIsTaken · 09/09/2020 20:18

I literally cannot bear the smell. I have given away a beautiful bunch (if you like them) in the past because the smell is so pungent. It gives me a headache like no other.
Reminds me of death as well.

PerfidiousAlbion · 09/09/2020 20:19

Not garbage. Cat piss.

Plus, theyre funeral flowers and they stain permanently.

willstarttomorrow · 09/09/2020 20:22

I love lilies and their beautiful scent. We unfortunatly seem to still be fostering a cat that turned up in our garden 5 years ago who is yet to be reclaimed so they cannot come into this house. To be honest I love scented flowers, daffodils, sunflowers etc. They just make me happy.

Babdoc · 09/09/2020 20:30

If anyone actually likes them, (tiny minority, judging from the PPs!) you can make them safe for cats by cutting off the stamens. It’s only the pollen that’s toxic.
I think they smell overpowering and sickly, so not a fan, but I do sometimes get given them, or find an odd one in a mixed bouquet. I always cut the stamens off - not only to protect my cat, but to stop the pollen staining anything it drops onto.

Augustbreeze · 09/09/2020 22:32

Like your approach @Saucery!

I love any other scented flower, and daffodils produce one of my favourite scents, but lilies? 🤮

FedUpAtHomeTroels · 09/09/2020 22:55

They are gross, they smell like death and funeral homes.

HalfBearOtherHalfCat · 09/09/2020 23:20

YANBU. They are stinky revolting flowers of death. I loathe them.

MinnieJackson · 10/09/2020 00:56

Urgh I think @LynetteScavo has got it. They are just not nice! Roses, dahlias, peonys, sunflowers. There are so many better flowers IMO but it's each to their own. I wouldn't leave a house that had lilies, or even notice them really, just don't like them
