Trump used manipulation and race-baiting four years ago. He’s at it again. We are weary and worried but we shall persist.

G'night all. I have 5 minutes to go.

JamieLeeCurtains · 30/09/2020 03:45

I'm watching the BBC news follow-up.

BruceAndNosh · 30/09/2020 03:56

Is there any point in letting millions of Americans vote when Trump is determined that only 6 votes in SCOTUS are needed?

BruceAndNosh · 30/09/2020 03:58

I think the next thread should be called "Where's the mute button?"

TheClaws · 30/09/2020 05:15

I managed to get through all of the debate. For me, Biden is the clear winner. Trump didn't go to any trouble to show decorum or follow debate guidelines; he blustered right in and talked over Biden and Wallace, threw insults and lies repeatedly, and attempted to goad Biden about Hunter when he was paying tribute to his fallen soldier son Beau.

Biden made a point of speaking directly at the screen - to the people - and I never saw Trump do that.

TheNorthWestPawsage · 30/09/2020 06:47

Just got up and wow! I'll need a damn fine cup of coffee to get through this! Great job MNetters Smile

I don't think decorum is valued equally across America...
TheClaws · 30/09/2020 07:26

Or even the pretence of politeness ...

lionheart · 30/09/2020 08:03

Well done everyone. I managed the first forty minutes only.

Roussette · 30/09/2020 08:25

Claws your post at 05.15 is exactly how I feel.

Trump's clan will've loved it because he was rude, ignorant and obnoxious. Biden did well considering but when you have a liar, and someone who shouts and insults and won't answer the q's... how on earth do you debate?

Lweji that guardian article yes. He was calling people to stand by, I heard it, when you tell an extremist right wing group to 'stand by' you are appointing yourself as the leader

(Why I couldn't sleep on this morning I do not know, I will be fit for nothing, but I'm in quarantine which means I can't even set foot outside the door so I can catch up sleep I hope)

The Lincoln Project have a post debate analysis with debate clips for anyone who wants a taste of what went down...

Am making myself a Brew before diving in...

Saw these on Twitter - summing up the debate (Also memories of TV from times gone by!) Trump and his Proud Boys.

I'd be interested on anyone's take how Chris Wallace did?

He did end up arguing a fair bit with Trump, very unedifying.

We're near to a new thread if anyone's up to it, I'll keep an eye on it and happy to do it if no one else does Smile

lifesabitchandthenyoudie · 30/09/2020 09:25

Watching the replay on CNN. Appalled. Chris seems to be trying but as DP said he really should have a mute button.

Something I don't understand is why people - even Democrats - say Biden isn't a good choice? Yes he's a bit old but I really like him. What have I missed?

Roussette · 30/09/2020 09:36

Oh YES.

Mike Reese
@SheriffReese
In tonight’s presidential debate the President said the “Portland Sheriff” supports him. As the Multnomah County Sheriff I have never supported Donald Trump and will never support him.

Roussette · 30/09/2020 09:40

I agree life
He's a good man, no doubt about that.
I do think he's too old though, I just wish they had someone vigorous and younger but in american politics it seems to be the norm.

Lweji · 30/09/2020 09:50

Biden is kind of neutral, and a safe white older male that is more likely to appeal to those who wouldn't vote for a woman or non-white. He isn't capable of rallying people up, like Obama did. But he won't attract as much hate. I think the US does need someone beige to heal.

TheNorthWestPawsage · 30/09/2020 09:50

Go for it Roussette! There's going to be a fair bit of movement on the threads now I suspect.

Lincoln Project have said they are going after Trump "children" now that Trump attacked Hunter Biden in the debate.

Completely agree with you, Roussette. President Obama was a blip, it seems. (Oh, and President Kennedy, of course.)
CaveMum · 30/09/2020 10:00

Well. I’m not sure what to say really.

I think Trevor Noah does a good summary, I can’t link to it from my phone but there’s a 5 min video on The Daily Show Facebook page.

CaveMum · 30/09/2020 10:07

@Jaichangecentfoisdenom see I don’t think Kennedy was that great. He has been idolised because of the assassination but if you look at a lot of stuff he did I think had he lived he’d be considered pretty average.

His personal life was a car crash - the affairs, the drugs, etc - but his politics were t great either. He was disinterested in the Civil Rights movement, until it became obvious it wasn’t going to go away, and his handling of Cuba and the Missile Crisis has been misrepresented - Lucy Worsley did a BBC Four programme about “American History’s Greatest Fibs” and she covers the Cuban Missile Crisis in it.

Forget about muting the microphones when it's not your turn to speak.
Let's have a trapdoor under each debaters podium
