iPhone updated - where are all my photos?

My phone has recently updated. I've gone from having 10,000 pics to 366. Where have all my photos gone?

I'm not techy but I've searched google and made sure my Apple iCloud photo option is switched on. I will speak to Apple as soon as I can.

But can anyone help? I was only looking through my pics last night so I know I've not deleted them. X

I read an article that a recent update removed photos from some iphones and ipads. Sad

autumnredhead · 22/08/2020 01:08

Oh my god I'll be gutted if that's happened!

I've got a call in with Apple support. All my memories.... holidays etc etc. It says my phone last backed up last night so I'm somewhat hopeful Apple can help.

Are they in the Recently Deleted album?

autumnredhead · 22/08/2020 01:11

No I've checked

autumnredhead · 22/08/2020 01:11

They've literally disappeared since last night

Do you have the cloud switched on?

autumnredhead · 22/08/2020 01:11

Yes I have cloud switched on x

I'm off on hols in the morning so I can't speak to Apple for a few days really

I'm reading around the internet and it does seem that if the phone storage is full photos can be hidden and not lost. I need to investigate in the cold light if day and not panicking at 1am. I'm sure there is a reasonable explanation. I know I've not deleted them and the phone has recently backed up. I've just panicked.

Following! Same issue up here 😫

funinthesun19 · 22/08/2020 01:37

Oh god op Sad Apple really suck and I hate the way they work their devices. I’ve read in the past about this happening. How on Earth is that a helpful setting they’ve created, where an update makes people’s photos disappear Hmm

Are all of your photos on iCloud? If they are, you can always download them. An absolute pain and you shouldn’t have to though because your photos shouldn’t disappear in the first place.

I hope you get them all back. I’m always so worried about my iPhone doing something like this and I don’t trust it at all. I’m boycotting Apple when I next get a new phone.

autumnredhead · 22/08/2020 01:45

@funinthesun19 - I'm just going to keep positive until told otherwise. I will be gutted if I've lost them, really will. But I'll going on holiday with my DD in a few hours and I'm not going to let it ruin my holiday. I will be gutted if I have lost them, but there is nothing I can do at this moment in time. And hopefully I will retrieve them!

OP posts:
autumnredhead · 22/08/2020 01:46

@funinthesun19 I've looked on iCloud and it's just the same 300 and odd photos as on my phone - although it's saying my phone was last backed up last night when all my photos were there.

autumnredhead · 22/08/2020 01:47

@AlwaysLatte - it's awful isn't it. Please let me know if you find a solution!

Yes have a wonderful holiday with your DD op! That escapism will do you the world of good right now. Where are you off to?

autumnredhead · 22/08/2020 01:57

@funinthesun19. Thank you! We are really looking forward to it, we are off to Greece! The taxi will be here in an hour! I'm not going to let potentially losing old photo memories ruin the memories we are about to make! And I was a child of the 80's my mum didn't have the option of taking 10,000 photos and managed to survive.

I will be gutted if the have gone, but they might not be yet.

Ohh. I hope Apple Support can help you retrieve them and also give you some answers. Have you tried switching it off and then on again?

Do you have Google Photos at all?

autumnredhead · 22/08/2020 02:04

Thanks @funinthesun19 - I've tried on and off. No I don't have Google pics 😥

Osirus · 22/08/2020 02:07

Ive got Google Photos as well as iCloud as an extra precaution. I’m sure the photos should still be there if they are backed up. I thought the update to the photo app deleted photos on the device rather than Apple’s servers but I could be wrong.

I hope you can retrieve them. Did you update before or after your phone backed up? Even so, I’m sure you didn’t take 10,000 photos in one day and if you have iCloud turned on and you’re in WiFi, your phone should back up daily.

Osirus · 22/08/2020 02:09

The article says users who haven’t backed up their phone will have permanently lost their photos. This doesn’t sound like you though OP?

funinthesun19 · 22/08/2020 02:10

Ooo sounds lovely! I hope you have a great time. Enjoy all of the new memories!

I always think that you know, how our parents survived in the 80s/90s without that many photos.

I hope you manage to retrieve them though as I can see they mean a lot to you. I’d be exactly the same. Let us know how you get on when you get back home.

funinthesun19 · 22/08/2020 02:16

Google Photos is great as an extra back up.
I would definitely start using it.

Potterpotterpotter · 22/08/2020 04:09

I need to do this new update but I have 29k of photos on my phone. I won’t do it yet just incase

autumnredhead · 22/08/2020 05:40

It just automatically updated mine.
