Head recommending wearing masks in school

rainyinscotland · 21/08/2020 18:05

So DC has been back at school full time for a bit (Scotland). Secondary school. All pupils in and no masks. The Headteacher has now written to parents that it's not possible to socially distance, so he/she is recommending that pupils and teachers wear masks. Recommending, not requiring.

YABU - the Head was wrong to do that.
YANBU - the Head was right to do that.

I have evil eyes apparently. So does my mask cancel them out or double them?

Clavinova · 26/08/2020 08:39

Quite frankly they should have said - lets follow Nicola's lead. But no at lunchtime there were still saying that there would be a face mask review...

Is that why Welsh Labour are still dithering, ("Wales announces review into face masks in schools")? Your TFL poster has been endorsed by the Mayor of London.

lets follow Nicola's lead
Didn't the school term start two weeks ago in Scotland?

SaltyAndFresh · 26/08/2020 08:43

That makes no sense. Who said anything about following Welsh Labour?

Clavinova · 26/08/2020 08:53

That makes no sense.

Makes sense to me - why has the Labour Health Minister in Wales asked for a face mask review? Can't he be more decisive.

Piggywaspushed · 26/08/2020 09:03

But clav even the Tory press are fed up. The press release given to them before the 10 pm deadline said all schools. the briefing to MPs then said no no no just some.

SaltyAndFresh · 26/08/2020 09:07

It makes no sense in the context of your response to @StaffAssociationRepresentative, who wasn't referring to WG.

I've only seen this;

“Wait - so it’s NOT masks for everyone in communal areas in schools? Just in local lockdown areas? FFS. That’s not what was briefed to the press earlier today.”

LouiseNW · 26/08/2020 09:43

Head NBU, other than not making it mandatory in communal areas, with appropriate exemptions.

StaffAssociationRepresentative · 26/08/2020 09:44

Just goes to show that the current crop of muppets in charge have no idea what they are doing. They have become so entangled in a web of spin that they can’t make a clear decision and stick to it for a period of time..

Lidlfix · 26/08/2020 09:44

"Let's follow Nichola's lead"I took to mean her announcement about face coverings came at the lunchtime briefing. BJ's u turn came later in the day after substantial criticism. If not, what did it mean?

I was thinking of it more the other way round tbh - teacher speaking, pupils listening. And also just in general life situations where it is mainly 1:1 or smaller groups.”

Maybe tiny mics, like the ones actors wear on stage sometimes? very cheap and no more intrusive than the headphones most of us wear when exercising?

Clavinova · 26/08/2020 09:48

“Wait - so it’s NOT masks for everyone in communal areas in schools? Just in local lockdown areas? FFS. That’s not what was briefed to the press earlier today.”

The guidance/requirement hasn't changed for me - it's exactly what I heard on TV last night.

noblegiraffe · 26/08/2020 09:49

Clav the point is that the government u-turned on its own u-turn before it even made it to the news.

Hopeless bunch of incompetents.

StaffAssociationRepresentative · 26/08/2020 09:49

It is not just the Tory press that is fed up but school staff, students and parents.

Everyday there is a new tweak for schools returning or results being handed out.

It has been a nightmare For school leaders planning the return and for teachers planning. Online/offline/without practicals/ trips / no trips and the latest is to stream lessons whilst teaching but that may create other issues

I think schools should require masks whenever 2 meter distancing can’t be maintained. So at most schools, that means all the time. Masks are awful, just awful, but they should be required at school for students and staff.“

You’re probably wearing the wrong mask for you. Just as health workers have to be fitted for the appropriate kind for their face, we all need to try a few before we find the right one. I went through 4 or 5 varieties before settling on the kind I wear now, an all in one with built in filter from Korea. So effective the instructions say it only requires washing every 2 days because the high spec filter kills nasties (I wash it every day anyway 🤪)
So comfortable, I honestly forget I’m wearing it.

Mia1415 · 26/08/2020 09:58

Masks are fine. No worse than school ties!

Don't be so ridiculous. How on earth can you compare wearing a mask to a tie.

Clavinova · 26/08/2020 10:04

Only on hearsay? Where is a copy of the press release?

Because they both just take a bit if getting used to.

Don't be such a drama llama

noblegiraffe · 26/08/2020 10:09

Only on hearsay?

No Clav you could see it in the headlines and talking points last night. It was obvious that journalists had prepared for a full, not partial u-turn.

They had to shove ‘in lockdown areas’ into their copy at the last minute.

In your twitter link the guidance to MPs hasn't changed.

noblegiraffe · 26/08/2020 10:19

In your twitter link the guidance to MPs hasn't changed.

??? No idea what the guidance to MPs was, but the press were briefed and ready to go and then the actual info sent to MPs overruling that was different.

As an aside, why the fuck is the government releasing important info at 10pm? Schools go back today in some parts.

Clavinova · 26/08/2020 10:26

No idea what the guidance to MPs was

Read your link at 09.39 - a copy of it there!

"Here’s what the Department for Education just sent to Conservative MPs on masks in schools."
"Masks only mandated in lockdown areas, discretionary elsewhere."

noblegiraffe · 26/08/2020 10:41

Yes Clav that was sent to Tory MPs just before 9pm last night, overturning the decision that had been briefed to the press (who had been trailing the ‘announcement later’ all day) that masks would be compulsory in all schools, not just lockdown areas.

Ie the govt briefed the press then changed their mind.

StaffAssociationRepresentative · 26/08/2020 11:27

Just proving yet again they are a bunch of muppets.
