To think there’s actually so much wisdom in the bible

I can see why it’s so popular
Almost like an early age self help book in some ways
Also hymns

Even a broken clock is right twice a day.

RyanBergarasTeeth · 14/08/2020 21:59

The bible actually has a lot of really good stories and morals. And some questionable bits. I dont think many people have actually read it they just hear bits and go mad. The old testament is hardcore though not at all nice. But the new testament has a lot of wisdom.

Scruffyoak · 14/08/2020 22:00

Not into fiction.

Bettysprocker · 14/08/2020 22:02

I've read it all and respectfully disagree.

WiddlinDiddlin · 14/08/2020 22:02

Depends on which bits you read.

Some of it was sensible for the time it was written in or the time it refers to, but not now.

Some of it is utter bollocks.

BIWI · 14/08/2020 22:03

Why do you insist on starting such ridiculous threads?

NailsNeedDoing · 14/08/2020 22:04

Lots of it does have good meaning, I agree. Some of it, not so much. It’s all about the perspective you read it with.

thistimelastweek · 14/08/2020 22:04

I know! These New Testament guys just nailed it!
(Too soon?)

NailsNeedDoing · 14/08/2020 22:05

And I love a good hymn!

CareBear50 · 14/08/2020 22:05

People are so dispariging of the Bible. Imagine if people did the same with the Koran or other revered religious texts. People would be seen as anti Muslim, anti Hindu or whatever. Why are people so anti and disrespectful to the Bible?

Old Testament is a bit too vengeful for me, although the Psalms are beautiful.

The NT teachings of Jesus are wonderful lessons in how to be better humans.

MysteriesOfTheOrganism · 14/08/2020 22:09

There is better wisdom without all the crap to be found elsewhere.

Lardlizard · 14/08/2020 22:12

This too shall pass
Is so apt

DDemelza · 14/08/2020 22:12

Ugh. The received wisdom is Old Testament = horrid, New Testament = wow, lovely.

This does not actually square with reality (The Song of Songs is poetry, for example, while the Pauline epistles and Revelations are fucking horrible in different ways) but is a very long-standing prejudice rooted in antisemitism.

SpeedofaSloth · 14/08/2020 22:12

OT = begatting and smiting
NT = don't be a knob
Is how I explained it to my DS (and then reminded him best not to use the same words in his next RE class).

Lardlizard · 14/08/2020 22:13

Actaully do enjoy listening to hymns, dh moans and says oh no that 🤣🙈

FizzyGreenWater · 14/08/2020 22:14

it's a bit long

Lardlizard · 14/08/2020 22:15

I don’t think I’m actually really religious, although I guess I hope it’s all true, but I think I’m fairly spiritual

OP posts:
Lardlizard · 14/08/2020 22:15

I’m actually going to fully re read both after September, when I have a bit more time

OP posts:
Tunnocks34 · 14/08/2020 22:16

I’d say like most religious books, and kids books, some parts are basic human values dressed up as stories. Other parts are just outdated tosh. My granny is strict catholic, and she bought my sons a kids bible of the old testament which I have read to them as the story’s are quite adventurous. Haven’t told them it’s true though.

gobbynorthernbird · 14/08/2020 22:18

Please no spoilers. I haven't got to the end yet.

Lardlizard · 14/08/2020 22:20

I do really like aesop's fables and Greek mythology too
(And various inspirational quotes etc)

1 Corinthians 13 provides good advice for marriage.
